Ok, this has to be a joke. We have read all these reviews of this place. Let's make things truth. Lunch here is bad..ok..I mean bad. They got some old guy running the place and well....he is kinda gross. We had dinner last week and it was worse than the last time we went and..we gotta tell ya ..it was dead...like no one was there. Makes one wonder about freshness. The owner is obviously writing positive reviews cuz this place went to hell about a year ago. If you do enjoy this place...well then you don't get out much then do you?!

This is one of the most romantic restaraunts I've been to. My girlfriend and I celebrated last valentines day here and I've already made reservations for this year as well. The inside of the restaraunt is like being at home and the patio is out of this world, The patio overlooks a nice little scenic street without too much traffic despite being right in buckhead. My favorite dish is a linguini with clams and herbs in a white wine sauce. It pairs excellently with their sauvignon blanc from new zealand. I forget the name of it though. Can't wait for this valentines day!

Though we had a little trouble finding the place, (I??d never been to this little side street before) we called and the hostess gave us very helpful directions. (It??s right by the Buckhead Whole Foods) Everyone we interacted with from the hostess to the bartender to the waiter was very friendly and made us feel right at home. Our waiter gave us some great recommendations on food and wine. We settled on an repasso wine that went very well with our food. We started out with the fried artichokes (upon our waiter??s suggestion) and they were wonderfully crispy with a delicious dipping sauce. For entrees, I had the veal and my wife had the shellfish pasta in tomato broth. We had a bit of a disagreement over which dish was better (it was totally mine). I fully intend to work my way through the rest of the menu on subsequent visits.

My boyfriend and I stopped in for dinner and had a lot of trouble trying to only choose a couple things off of this menu. Also, we really like the traditional Italian format that is divided into soups and salads, appetizers, pastas, and then entrees.
For the soup course, we tried the soups. The tomato bisque was delicious, (but then, how much can you do with tomato soup?) The butternut squash soup, however, was absolutely amazing. Often, squash soups are too sweet to enjoy as a precurser to food, but this was wonderfully rich and creamy.
For an appetizer, we tried the fried goat cheese, it was tasty, but perhaps the cheese rondelles could have been a bit smaller. Nevertheless, I would order it again.
Our entrees were: chicken piccata (I know, I don't order chicken either, when dining out, but this one is worth it) with a great mashed potato side, and a wonderful maple salmon dish that was served over a bacon and potato risotto. Quite simply, words fail me... I could not possibly imagine either of these dishes as more perfect (and I do dabble in the kitchen just a bit).
Bottom line: Try the food, love the wine, and leave wanting more!

I just can't say enough about how wonderful this place is!
To start off, the decor is really cool; when you first walk in, the front hall looks like the outside of an old house with a front door, roof and everything. The decor is very chic but welcoming. You actually feel like you're eating at some obscure little eatery in Italy.
Everyone is extremely friendly; the waiters take excellent care of you but they're not too stuck up to relax and have fun with you. I've even stopped to chat with the owner on my way out and he seems like a very down-to-earth guy.
The food is absolutely delicious. My favorite dish is the halibut, but everything else I've ever gotten has been equally scrumptious. And the wine; oh my GOD, the wine! It seems like they have just about anything you could possibly want. My advice: trust your waiter, they know the wine and can help you find something obscure but fantastic! You can even try it before you buy it, if you want a taste of something before you order it.
Finally; once the weather warms up, the patio is simply to-die-for! Even though it's right in the middle of the city, there's no traffic noise and the tree-lined street provides for a beautiful view.

I don't know about you, but when I get off after a long day at the office, sometimes I just want to relax with a glass of wine before I head home for the evening. My favorite place to observe this ritual is Portofino. Since I only go during the week, the non-smoker's bar is never crowded and the staff is very friendly but unobtrusive so I can unwind in peace. The wine list has a variety of excellent choices at a great value and isn't limited to just Italian wines. Every once in awhile, I'll order an appetizer and the food is always tasty too.

This restaurant is right around the corner from my office, so it's really convenient for lunch. They have this great menu where you can pick three selections from a long list of items, so you can get a different combination every time and they're all fantastic. They also have several pasta dishes and salads. Every once in awhile, I'll also sneak a glass of wine, they have quite a selection to choose from.

This place pulls off the whole elegant-but-cozy vibe perfectly! It has the feel of a family-owned restaurant but it's right in the middle of buckhead! I was skeptical at first, (not really a fan of Italian) but I have been converted!! All of us managed to get a great table next to the fireplace, Initially, we felt out of place, but the easygoing staff made us feel right at home. He found us the perfect wine that everyone loved and made spot-on suggestions on the food.
I hate to say it, but one of the best parts of our meal was the bread and olive-oil. Both are made right there (or so they say...)

We arrived early, around 6:30 on Friday. The place was busy but not packed, and we got a table without any waiting. The waiter was very friendly and funny and prompt with our first round of drinks.
My only gripe is that another table was seated next to us with a very loud baby. I could not understand why anyone would bring a baby, since it's not exactly a kids kind of place. Fortunately, the server asked us if we'd prefer a quieter table without or even having to ask. How attentive!
I ordered the scallops over polenta with mushrooms and onions and it was excellent. The scallops were cooked perfectly, neither glassy nor rubbery. And the polenta was some kind of coarse ground deal that was a nice complement. It also had some mushrooms and onions to complete the dish. One of the other people in our party had a pasta with seafood in a tomato broth that looked fantastic.
I stayed with cocktails, but have heard the place has good wine too. The wine list certainly looked pretty expansive. I've been telling all of my friends about this place and highly recommend it.

With the economy the way it is, we don't get out as much as we used to, But when we do dine out, this is where we go. We've celebrated our last 4 anniversaries here. The food and service are top-notch and make us feel at home, but without the need to cook or do dishes. :-)

I'm certainly no expert on wines, but over the last few years I've started to develop an appreciation for all the things that can be done with grapes. I find I really enjoy trying new types of grapes or trying wines from different parts of the world. This restaurant is the perfect place for an inquisitive palate. The wine selection is massive, with wines from all over Italy and from all over the world, and the prices are very reasonable. I try to sample at least one new wine every time I dine there, and I urge any other blossoming oenophiles to do the same!

My husband and I used to dine at Portofino all the time until we moved away from Atlanta a couple years ago. Recently, we were back in the city and decided to go back. The best thing about this restaurant is that even though the menu had changed completely, the food was just as good as we'd remembered. It is rare, even for the best restaurants, to be so consistently enjoyable, and yet we have never had a bad meal there.

My wife and I have been dining here for years and have always enjoyed the the experience, we even held my father's 70th birthday party for about thirty people at Portofino. They even let us set up a special menu in advance!
-Very Accommodating of Large Parties
-Excellent Food and Wine
-Cozy Indoor Dining and a Beautiful Patio

Took a couple of colleagues out for a business dinner. The bartender recommended a Zinfandel with a spanish name that was awesome. The pork chop was perfectly tender, and my coworkers enjoyed their veal and fish as well. The pricing was very reasonable: $120 for starters, dinner, and wine for the 3 of us. This is a great setting for a relaxed business dinner.

We were visiting Atlanta and staying at the St Regis, when we stumbled across Portofino within walking distance of our hotel. Our server seemed very friendly and knowledgeable about the wine list and helped us pick the perfect wines to go with our dinners, which were delicious. We will definitely be back next time we're in town!!

My husband and I had dinner here over the weekend. Not good.

Our food tasted "old" and the service was slow. The place was not busy (now we see why) yet it took about 15 for a few glasses of wine. We won't be back. We will stick to the real restaurants.

I found a Portofino certificate in my Welcome Mat packet and thought that I would give it a try. I sat at the bar and had a few appetizers and some wine, and I had the best evening. I had a beet salad and an eggplant parmesan that were both very tasty. Matt, the bartender, gave great wine recommendations, and was very sweet. I was introduced to a couple regulars and even a few servers. I didn't want to leave, but it was a school night. This is going to be my neighborhood haunt.

My wife and another couple had dinner over the weekend and we all agree, "What a Shame." The waitress didnt know what she was talking about and the food was God-awful. We have been many times in the past and enjoyed this spot. We won't be back any time soon and will be sure to tell friends about the Restaurant that was top notch only a year or so ago. Maybe a new management team came in or the rumors are true and their chef has left.

myself and my boy toy, another couple and one friend who just showed out of the buckhead blue...anyway....im not sure who took over the management at portofino . But things just are not right...the flights???? The fantastic monthly special. We got salmon that was ...well

we thought our salad was a bit "dressed".

Our waiter had no idea what planet he was on....another waiter; perhaps Zenny? Took control ov the table.

The food was not that great. I'm sorry to say.

My husband found this restaurant on this site and saw that it had a high review. We decided to give it a try.
At first site it is in a lovely setting. Going in everybody is very friendly. We decided to sit outside, because it was a beautiful day. Now we also had our 2 yr old daughter with us. They put us in a area with the sun in my daughters eyes, and they have nothing to keep her entertained. That is when we found that this is not a family setting. Nothing on that menu had anything kids would eat, unless your child had a very mature taste buds. The waiter was nice but I don't think he carded that much for our service. The food was moderate. Bland, not alot to it. I was hoping for better. If you decide to try, go with friends or just your spouse, and maybe you will have better luck then we did.

Dined here on New Years Eve. Fantastic service. Food was even better. Try the fried risotto, one of the best snacks I've ever eaten. The osso bucco was fabulous, was a specialty in honor of their anniversary. Crossing my fingers that it will be a permanent addition to the menu. Super fresh pasta. Yummy sorbets.

I chose Portofino when my date asked me where I would like to go this Friday. I had driven past a few times, it seemed charming, and I've heard good things form friends. After calling, we decided to show up early to sit on the patio which turned into a good decision as the weather was threatening. Our very helpful server made very good suggestions. We ended up with a few things from the regular menu and a few from their regional specials. The sauteed olive mixture was interesting and flavorful. My date like it better than me. My eggplant and goat cheese appetizer was delicious. I could go back for that alone. Our entrees, a halibut and tuna, were both terrific. The pace was a little fast for us, but we were in no hurry. Interesting dessert selection - we chose a strawberry calzone which was sort of like a turnover with rhubarb that we both loved. Service was very friendly without being obtrusive. All in all a great time.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta. I have been many times over the years, and whether I am sitting inside or outside, I always have a great time. The food is consistently above average, and the wine list always has something interesting. I like the new monthly regional menus as it always gives me something new to order. Everyone I know eats here.

first of all, our food was served cold. second of all, we had to call for the management to replace our food with hot food. third of all, they probably didn't care and placed it in the microwave. they should have given us a discount as a result of the POOR service, but they did not. plus, when the waiter described the entres, he couldn't pronounce the italian correctly like the staff has in previous visits to this restaurant and was extremely unprofessional and was like "and something like that" when he described the entres and couldn't pronounce the terms. the service was unreasonably slow. plus, it was my sister's graduation night and it made the conclusion of her graduation unbearable, which should not have been the case. don't go here. and, i hope that waiter was FIRED!

Fantastic experience, right down to the wine suggestions. My steak was perfectly cooked and they even allowed me to sub out potatoes for pasta. When in Rome...! I sat at the bar and enjoyed myself immensely. I look forward to taking friends the next time around. Thank you Trevor! :)

Pros: Great value, Great Service, Excellent meal

.

i had heard some good things about this restaurant but can't quite remember their source...good thing too, because i would have sent THEM our bill. from the apex of poor service to bland and tasteless food selections, my glass of wine was the highlight of my dinner experience here.

We were stunned to find such a charming restaurant just around the corner. Great wines, no attitude, pleasant staff, satisfying food.

The food is great. The atmosphere makes you feel relaxed and a bit festive. Within two weeks I've been four times with different friends and it's been better every time. Vincent, at the bar, makes it worth the trip alone.

Pros: Food, Bartender

I wish it was better than it was. Veal scallopini was really, truly, bland. Had to ask for salt to liven it up -- tasted like it was breaded in matzo meal. Butternut squash soup was lukewarm. The service was extremely cheery and friendly and I didn't have the heart to tell her that the food was really bleh. The recommended creme brulee -- shame on the kitchen for sending it out. It was cold on the inside and charred on the outside and tasted burnt.

Again, excellent service, inexpensive wine list, great patio on quiet street, but for $100 with tip it has GOT to be better than this.

Unpretentious restaurant with genuinely friendly staff. Outstanding wine list offering tremendous value. Consistently good food at reasonable prices. I would not pick Portofino as one of the best restaurants in town, but it is one of my favorites.

Because they need some medicine in the kitchen. The food was not good, service and in particular the manager were friendly and helpful. The menu sounded inviting enough but the risotto was just plain awful. How do you tip when it isnt good food?
Lovely setting on the patio

I went to Portofino with my family. There were nine of us and the staff at the restaurant could not have been nicer. I used to wait tables, and I know that my family can be very difficult. We moved tables twice before sitting. Everyone went out of their way to make our gathering as nice as possible. The food was great, and everyone at the table enjoyed themselves, but the staff was outstanding!

An assortment of Italian dishes from risottos to fish along with several pasta and pizza choices sure to please all. Wine pairings are some of the most extensive and reasonably priced in the city. Great selection by the glass as well as by the taste. This is one you can return to again and again without breaking the bank.

Sorry but portofino doesnt get a pass mark. Sad italianate food with nothing original and nothing good. The server was rude and unattentive, unless he had spilt something on me it couldnt have been worse. He got our order wrong and really didnt care. Pizza was undercooked and tough, mussels overcooked but the broth was nice, mozzarella was tough and flavourless. Didnt want to spend any more money to find out what their desserts had to offer

My friends and I always pick Portofino to get together. It is the cutest restaurant and we have never been dissapointed. We always try to sit on the patio. If I were to have to pick a favorite restaurant in Atlanta this would be it.

Ever since we found Portofino we have been bringing out-of-town friends when they visit. We like having a relaxed, great restaurant to show off to our friends from New York, Chicago and California. So far everyone's been impressed particularly with the wine list and food.

What a perfect place to go with your friends! Food was excellent, the wine flights were fun and the atmosphere couldn't have been more pleasant. We absolutly loved sitting out on the patio!

I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. I love that its in Buckhead, yet off the beaten path. I plan to return here many, many times and am confident that you will too!
