Dont feel bad. I, too, was asked to not come there...but very indirectly. I was told "it is OK if you go someplace else to worship". This was my birth church, and attended from 1954 to 1992. Even during some short absences while living in other towns, I always considered Prince my home church. I also knew Pastor Tatum; he baptized me. Also, agree Church just got to political and huge. I prefer a church where you can know the people. Also, it is very showy, as stated by someone else. Sometimes the services seem staged, as if performing for Broadway. Although their intentions are good, they are misdirected. Many, many projects (out of area) are focus instead of the local Athens people. Moving from Prince Ave out to the country was not demonstrating much support to locals who attend.
Its OK though; in regard to my situation, I was told "sometimes us Christians are the first to shoot our own soldiers". Yeah, that made me feel all better. God Bless Them.

I spent 20 yrs going to this church, it was like a marriage made in Heaven or so I thought. I thought when Pastor Rickets took over the ministry in the 70's that he was a wonderful replacement. Pastor Jack Tatum was a model for pastors. Perhaps perfect as Job. I was single and went 3 days a week and again on Sun. eve. My problem was that I was always serious about the word of God. I didn;t believe in substituting the word for what was popular. I brought issues of the singles group that reflected a need for change to men that brought to the (senior) pastor. We were all asked to worship somewhere else. Things like pre-marital relations and marriage of divorced persons along with questions pertaining to the age of the universe being more that 6-12,000 yrs. old were not desired. I learned how to appreciate the King James Bible better than any other. I considered it like my mate. Gentle christian music without sounding like a rock band. Sermans that were preached that sounded as though Jesus had prepared the pastor's serman. I became in a way bound by this way of ministry like a man that had developed a love for his wife over 20 yrs. Where does a man go after he finds that all churches have changed over the years. I listen to Joel Olsteen and he reminds me of what it was like. I have lately had a big desire to re-enter the ministry and become a teacher or preacher. There just seems to be so much politics in it now that I don't think even God recognizes what we are doing.

Prince Avenue is a big church, but Bro. Bill's messages will get your heart and the Sunday School classes will teach you how to grow spiritually. If you are used to singing from hymnals and being straight faced in church, you might not like it - we sing praise songs using a screen for the words, and we sing like we're happy! When you meet the people you know that it is not a show - it is all straight from the heart. You need to get plugged in right away, or you will feel like a small fish in a big pond.

PROS: Great materials, opportunities for growth and serving
CONS: Size, worship service sometimes seems showy
