The tour through the house is a quicker than I would have liked. The tour guide was very chipper and waited for the children to ask questions. Just knowing that this is where history began was enough.

The Wren's Nest is the oldest house museum in Atlanta. It was the home of Joel Chandler Harris, the chronicler of the Uncle Remus stories. Walt Disney's Song of the South was partially filmed at The Wren's Nest. We enjoyed seeing the authentic Victorian furnishings, including the chandelier which could use both gas or electricity because Mr. Harris considered electricity a fad, and the bathroom he reluctantly had added at the request of his wife and children, even though he considered indoor plumbing unsanitary. The house is smaller than I thought, and at the time we went they were not having the storytelling on the grounds which I had hoped to hear. Nevertheless, the tour was enjoyable and The Wren's Nest is worth the trip.

PROS: Charming house, informed tour guide, authentic furnishings
CONS: Lack of funds has caused temporary cancellation of some activities

My husband and I love historic architecture and we really enjoyed our tour of Joel Chandler Harris' home. Harris, author of the Uncle Remus books was also an editor of the Atlanta Constitution. Originally built in 1870, Harris bought it in 1883 and in 1884 turned it into the cute Victorian Queen Anne cottage it is today. Virtually unchanged since Harris' death in 1908, this landmark home even contains the furnishings from Harris time there.
