Garden Hills is definitely one of the older theaters in Atlanta. The one auditorium is huge. The sound system isn't necessarily the best, but really the types of movies one sees there aren't too dependent upon a state-of-the-art sound system. If you're looking for that one hard to find movie and it's not at midtown cinemas, there's a good change it's at Garden hills. They're also home to a great movie club that usually meets every sunday morning. The center section of seats is incredibly wide, so if the only seats open are in the middle, then you got a lot of people to cross over.

My favorite place to watch a serious art film in Atlanta is the Garden Hills Theatre in Buckhead. While for some, it may be a shock to just have one screen and a small auditorium; for me it brings back memories of school. The setting definitely gets you in the mood for a serious movie. This is a great place to take a date and watch a serious flick that you can discuss the rest of the night, maybe over some wine.

This theater is for foreign and indie flick lovers. They only have
one screen and the movie doesn't change as often as other theaters but it's one of the few places in Atlanta where indie lovers can find a show. My girlfriend hates it because she thinks the movies are boring and the seats too uncomfortable. She also complains about the sound (too weak) and that there are too few choices from the snack bar. We still go though because I love this place and think her minor annoyances are blown way out of proportion. Again this place is for the true movie fan.

Located in Buckhead, Lefont Theatres plays great international and indie films. I had the privilege of seeing City of God, and was more than pleased that Lefont existed. They have programs that tell you the up and coming movies for the week, and feature everything from Bollywood to Brazil.

It's not high-tech, it's not commercialized at all. It's low-key, and it exists to show pictures. So if you want IMAX, go to IMAX. If you want tasteful, thought-provoking cinema, check out Lefont.

PROS: They play the best in world cinema and independent production
CONS: They only play one film at a time!
