We have eaten at Maddy's many times & have always enjoyed it, but last night was a real disappointment. There were nearly 20 of us, so, as a courtesy, we had called the day before to let them know that there would be a large group coming.

We had heard this place was good so we bought a Groupn to try it. As we walked in, we noticed the health rating was an 80 B. This alone almost made us walk out but we bought this Groupon and heard it was so good.

one of my absolute favorite places of all time!
order the rib sandwich! its a half rack of ribs between some bread ;o) only $5 !!!!
I am VERY picky about my food. i have had it all and i can honestly say that these ribs are the BEST!!! and for only 5 bucks!
also every night they have live blues which is almost always excellent!
I eat there every week and the food never fails to impress me!
trust me and get the rib sandwich!

Pros: THE ABSOLUTE BEST RIBS IN ATLANTA!!!

Cons: little far from city, close at 10pm not later.

This little hip blues and barbeque joint is located down the street from Emory campus. I was just visiting Atlanta and the Decatur area because I had friends and family who lived here. When I asked my friend to take me to the best barbeque in her area, she drove me straight to Maddy's without a second thought. I would recommend trying the ribs or the rib sandwich. The stew is also delicious as well as the phenomenal fire baked beans. Thankfully, sweat tea is on tap. It is definitely a southern barbeque joint. Their use of a rub instead of drowning the ribs in barbeque sauce was a welcomed change from other barbeque joints that I have been to. This place gets a thumbs up from this Texan. Also, the live performances that are a part of this establishment's charm.

Pros: Original Style, Good Food, Inexpensive

Cons: Limited Space

I love Maddy's, their ribs fall off the bone and are not full of gristle and fat. If you go at night you can listen to some live blues too, always a treat.

Stopped in on a Friday to pick-up and order, but decided to eat in instead as there was this band the Rick Carter Project that just blew me away. They sounded like Eric Clapton when he was with John Mayall. Outstanding thought I'd been transported back in time!!! The great ribs, beer, and music made for an incredible night. Couldn't believe band!

My husband and I dropped in around 8pm on a Monday. The smells were heavenly and pulled us in the door.

Unfortunately the ribs were not available due to them running out and they refused to sacrifice anything in their cooking to speed up the process.

We had the pulled bbq and split a pitcher. What we got was excellent. I can't wait to go back and actually try the ribs. And hopefully for a live band.

If you love ribs you'll love Maddy's. When I moved to Atlanta, I searched high and low for a bbq spot that sold ribs that I could compare to the the ones I had back in Florida. Maddy's met all expectations, and you'll be willing to pay. Great food great service, and I guarantee that you'll lick your fingers!

I cannot, in all good conscience, recommend Maddy's BBQ. I have only eaten there once, and it was honestly the greasiest, fattiest BBQ I have ever had. The sauce was tasty, but the meat wasn't well-cooked and clearly not quality cuts. There are much better BBQ options, so skip this place.

I'm not sure what they put in the barbecue sauce at Maddy's, or how they cook it, but it makes me want more barbecue at Maddy's--definitely the best ribs within a 10-mile radius. The meat is juicy and tender, and I'm trying to figure out what they put in the potato salad to give it its unique flavor. The pork sandwich is especially good. One minus for me was the volume (too loud for the size of the room) of the live music--but if you go early you can avoid that.

I've been in Atlanta for 18 years and sampled many Q joints, and this one takes the cake. Luckily for me, I don't have to travel too far to sample their awesome ribs.
I like my ribs dry so I usually have sauce on the side - YUMMY! They've smoked the ribs so well that the flavor is in the bone.
My only complaint is that the side orders are way too small. The potato salad is yummy, but I often won't order them because there's no way I'm paying money for a teaspoon of food.

We love the food at this place, however it's a little difficult for me to enjoy a meal on site with all the racket. We've actually eaten at the restaurant 4 or 5 times, but the live music was so bad that we just started carrying out. The ribs fall off the bone, the chicken is always tender and moist and the sides are pretty good-especially the potato salad.

Being a KC transplant, I like my ribs. I have to say I was fairly impressed with their ribs. The meat fell off the bone at one end of the ribs and ended up a little over cooked on the other side. The potato salad was good enough that I would kick my mother in law for a bowl. My only issue was that they had no fries on the menu. In KC you gotta have fries with BBQ. But I am in Georgia now so have to adapt. Overall good food and music. This KC fatman says give it a try.

It's not much to look at, but hey, it's a rib joint! And the ribs rock! Apparently the owner is a cousin of the owner of Fat Matt's, but Maddy's has definitely got the best ribs and sauce, hands down. The potato salad is a little sweet for me, but the cole slaw is a great companion to the barbecue. Enjoy!

As an Emory student who is always broke and hungry, I find Maddy's to be a godsend. The barbeque is always cheap and especially filling which leaves me money for some cold beer! Be sure to check out the monthly $2 bottle beer specials, which are always top-shelf brews such as Guiness, Red Stripe, Shiner Bock, and Warsteiner. Every night there is free live entertainment featuring local blues/rock bands. There is a full deck for outdoor dining as well if you would rather hear the music at a more managable volume. The only downside is the first-come first-serve seating, which can go quick on Friday and Saturday nights so come early to grab a table for the evening. Bonus: The service is quick and the staff is always polite and accomodating. A great barbeque restaurant and a great time.

Visited this place after work on Friday 7/27, in a word AWFUL. I went there based on the previous reveiws and I was soooo disappointed. There was not even a hint of the smoke that you should smell at a good rib joint. I was horrify to see ribs roasting on a grill! But.. I went ahead and tried it, big mistake. I ordered the combo with ribs and chopped chicken and a side of potato salad. The ribs tasted like they had been boiled and then grilled, the chopped chicken was full of fat and the potato salad had a hard crust like it was refrigerated without a cover. * Also there management might want to think about asking the employees not to sit on the counter during business hours.. very unprofessional and unsanitary. But... I digress. All I know is I'll never ever spend my hard earned money there again.

Okay, I admit this is my first review but I could'nt let the review by triciadunlap to be taken as a non-bias review. Maddy's has been one of my favorite spots for a couple of years now. The ribs are fall off the bone, the potato salad is as good as I have found, and the staff is always prompt and friendly. As for the lack of smoke, my wife definitely knows when i have snuck off to Maddy's because i come home with that great barbecue smell. Maddy's is always my choice for a great barbecue meal and a good time. I hope you folks out there try it and enjoy it like I have.

"Good barbeque" is a subjective concept, of course, but, for me, Maddy?s has the right idea. Reasonable prices. The barbeque itself is neither too dry, nor too soupy, and the sauce is savory with more heat than sweet. I?m a creature of habit with barbeque, so I haven't tried a lot of their menu, but I can highly recommend the pulled pork sandwich. (If you aren't a pork fan, they do a chicken version that is quite nice too.) If you like garlic, you can?t miss the potato salad, which is a garlic-y delight. I also pony up the 25 cents for extra sauce, as I?ve discovered that dipping a bit of potato salad in it just takes it to a whole 'nother level. The killer beer specials, free soda refills, and hip and friendly staff are the icing on the Maddy's cake.

One or two caveats, (but nothing that should prevent you patronizing this fine establishment). Parking is really really bad. The lot is small, and seems to have suffered earthquake damage. The dining area is intimate and they have live blues, so come early on a weekday if you don't like crowds and noise. Also, the building might look a little funky and run-down for some folks, but keep in mind that you aren?t going to find this caliber of barbeque in a place that looks like Chili's.

Look, I don't know where the person below me was eating, but it was NOT Maddy's Rib and Blues Joint. The ribs are perfection of the highest ambrosial order, the pull pork and chop chicken sandwiches are, to be frank, the best. I have to eat at Maddy's at least once a week if not more(Most of the time its more). The draft beer selection is the envy of many full-service bars, including seasonal brews from Red Hook and Sweetwater. Oh, and did i mention FREE, LIVE, music every night of the week? Well its true, every night a different band covering a different perspective of southern blues. Get there early if you want a table on friday or saturday night!
All in all, Maddy's rocks

Okay, the barbequed chicken and chopped pork sandwiches are pretty good. Nice, cold beer, great music if you go on the right night. BUT, I have to be honest and say those ribs were pretty nasty, YES, they were BAD! Fatty and tough! I have a good set of teeth, but even a Rottweiler would have a hard time getting those things down. I had heartburn for at least a day after I ate them and had to pop alot of Pepcid ACs! STAY away from those ribs! They're a heart attack on a plate just waiting to happen! Take your cell phone so you can call 911. Maddy, why don't you go for some baby back ribs? We'd be glad to pay for the difference, and they're so much more tender and leaner. As far as the sides, well Maddy, please come up with some new options. That slaw and potato salad are straight out of those big plastic bins you can buy at Sam's club. Stick to potato chips, you can't mess those up!

Finally the Emory/Decatur area has a good Bar-b-q place. I like the old blues music playing when I eat "Q" because you get that Memphis soul feeling that puts you in the mood for barbq. The menu here is easy to read and the service is good. As for the food, the chopped pork was average but the ribs was off the chain! Just as good as Fatt Matt's and tender falling off the bone with alot of meat.Next time just getting a full slab!! Also, the tangy barbeque sauce is good but wish they also had a vinegar based choice as well. The sides are also good especially the brunswick stew.A good beer selection but they need to add some good southern sweet tea. The only real complaint here is the parking lot which needs to be improved .I'm glad I can have good ribs on my way home.

AJC voted Maddy's Best Ribs (in a tie) but their chopped chicken sandwhich is best in my book- and unique as far as local BBQ joints. Everybody is super friendly there, and they try to keep kids busy with instruments and noise makers, which makes parents very grateful. Laid-back, but energy really gets racing when bands start going!

I have been on the lookout for good barbecue in Atlanta, and this certainly was not it. I'd equate the food to the kind of "barbecue" that you might get at hospital or school cafeteria. Don't get me wrong, it was fine, though the potato salad had an odd taste to it- but it wasn't GOOD, and most certainly did not live up to what the other reviewers on this site have said. Listening to the music was the only thing that kept the evening from being a waste. Too bad they can't couple the fun local musicians with food that I would want to actually eat again.

I read several really good reviews and had a taste for barbeque so I stopped in on my way home from the grocery store. I thought I'd enjoy a chopped pork sandwich with nice chunks of crispy skin and that smokey flavor that's the hallmark of a really good sandwich. I was SO disappointed - the meat had the consistency of boiled, pulled pork that might have been sloshed around in an ordinary sauce.

I was SO disappointed - the meat had the consistency of boiled, pulled pork that might have been sloshed around in an ordinary sauce.

Pros: friendly

.

To me the chicken is the best. The chicken is alway moist and delicious. The food is always consistent and great. I ask the cook to put some burn on my ribs. YUMMY! The blues atmosphere does not interfere if I choose to watch the television. You have to visit this place just for the food and the great wait staff alone. I had my baby shower here and I will never forget it. The owners are the best and its a great place to frequent.

Maddy's aims for a kind of updated, mod, juke-joint atmospere, and it succeeds! I love it when the place is jumpin' and on Sunday mornings, when things are slower and quieter. But this isn't 1939 Mississippi or even 1975 Chicago, folks. What would it hurt to add some real down-home greens, blackeyed peas, snap beans, or sweet tater caserole? We asked a guy working the counter about it once. Nice guy, yet he still sneered and said "EV'ry one asks that." . . .Maybe 4 a reason???

Sometimes there's nothing more comforting than lounging back with a plate of barbecue and a pint of quality ale while lively blues music fills the air. That's what Maddy's has delivered every time I've gone there. It's an informal barbecue place with a small stage on which various blues-driven bands play nightly. The BBQ (we've had the ribs, chicken and a few sandwiches) is really tasty and the selection of beers, as well as price range, is pretty damn good. Very
comfy joint with efficient, friendly service.

How could you not love this place? The people working there are eager, everybody is smiling, there's live blues bands every night and a great beer selection. Maddy's has brought life back to this section of Decatur and really brought a neighborhood back together. The place rocks and it's fun. Check out the painted kids chairs- one is in harley davidson flames!
