This place looks out of the 80's. Our waitress was rude when I suggested my cream cheese breakfast omlet was overly cooked. She didn't have the necessary people skills to wait tables... We did buy some wonderful baked goods at the front counter when the lady stopped reading her magazine to help us. Some cakes on display match the 80's decor. A nice place to step back in time and take a whack in the face from the staff. Go buy the bread and run. Oh! I almost forgot. A member of the kitchen near the car park was smoking when we arrived and when we left! Good on you.

We bought a cheese danish, which was not good by any means, and a few other things. We asked about sitting inside while we ate our danish and getting drinks to have with it. We were told we would have to sit outside. They were not even busy. It was past breakfast time and not even 10:30 am when this happened. We will not visit this place again and suggest you don't either unless you want to be told you must sit outside.

Whenever we visit Helen, with stop at Hofer's for lunch. The bratwurst and sauerkraut taste delicious and the dining room reminds one of the "Gaststuben" in Bavaria. Their bread and pretzels are good enough to take home to Mom.

Wonderful German breads and the Pretzel rolls are great. Best German potato salad I ever had. You can order off their website if you live any distance. They have the best breakfast ever and you will never leave hungry.

I always like trying new things and Hofers does not disappoint. The sandwiches are outstanding and the pastries melt in your mouth. I especially enjoyed the pastrami sandwich!

This little cafe is a great spot for lunch after touring Charlemaigne's Kingdom. The snitzel sandwich is wonderful on rye bread with some German potato salad on the side. Also try the pretzel dumpling. WOW!

Pros: Nice cool spot on a hot day.

Cons: The dinig area is small and may require a wait.

Helen, Georgia, is a small Bavarian-themed town in the N Georgia mountains. One of their premier retailers is Hofers Bakery and Cafe.

The front of the store is a traditional bakery, with sweets and breads. The back of the store is a cafe, where you can order delicious German-style lunches.

We usually order a dozen crusty rolls. The rolls are delicious with a bit of soft, melty cheese.

PROS: authentic German-style offerings
CONS: once they run out for the day...they're out
