This hangout on the heartbeat of Ponce de Leon serves as a headquarters for tastemakers, hipsters, bike nerds, comic nerds, Emory nerds, and just any all around Poncey character. They tore the wall down that separated the back and main room, and the regulars acted as if they took Jeff Davis off Stone Mnt. But the place is much more an open space, and seemingly more open for Ponce outsiders to check out.

Pros: Let Grant from Hollis Gillespies stories make you a drink

Cons: outsiders may feel left out

I really like this place. The deck is the place to be on a warm evening when the neighborhood gets interesting. The biggest surprise is how good the food is. The place comes off as a drinking establishment, but it is a really good restaurant as well. I'm a big Bar BQ fan, and they have really good Cue. I particularly like the half chicken, but the pork is very good as well. The sides are ample and tasty; I particularly like the fried zuchinni and the tater tots.

The wait staff has been friendly, helpful and efficient every time I've been there. If you like your waitresses without tattoos, this may not be the place for you.

Situated along Ponce de Leon Ave, you get a full dose of urban exposure in an interesting part of the city.

My only complaint is that I always sit outside on the deck, and so do all the smokers. I wish they would take their habit somewhere that I'm not eating.

Once you start going to the Local, it's sort of hard to stop. Steve, Grant and Kerri take such good care of you - why would you ever go anywhere else??

The most surprising thing about this Ponce de Leon staple is probably the food - order anything barbecue related and you will not be disappointed. My favorite are the lemon pepper chicken wings - huge pieces of meat, rolled in flavorful spices, smoked and flash fried so they're falling off the bone AND crispy. Miraculous!

The recently refurbished porch is great for big groups in the spring and summer, and the juke box can play any song you could ever want! (No seriously, it's an internet jukebox.)

The Local is very much a college hang-out. They get packed on trivia nights. They have a good beer selection. The food is bar food but with a BBQ twist.

We went here to play trivia once. I wasn't very impressed with the food. The BBQ was ok but nothing spectacular. The place seemed kind of dingy to me.

I have no idea why, but they have the best tater tots of all time. Also a decent salad and black bean burger. It looks like such a dive I couldn't believe they even had vegetables on the menu. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it to Buckhead folks.

This is by far the best bar in Atlanta. Grant is a master at his craft and the food is fantastic. You can enjoy a night of trivia or just disappear to the back for some great pinball and darts.

This is a fun bar. It's a down to earth bar with very little Buckhead style conversation. The bartenders have been around for a while and you never know where a conversation might end up. The jam packed night is wed for trivia so if you like that kind of thing then this is your night. Good food. Go there and drink.

Great College Hangout.... I've aged out of this place now, but back in the day it was the spot, and I think it still is. It gets pretty packed on weekends.... they have trivia nights, and a big beer selection. I haven't eaten a lot of the food, i guess I'd say typical bar food, but great tater tots, that bring your mind straight back to the school cafeteria. They call it the local, i guess cause it's a great locals only sorta spot. I love the place

If you like weird and occasionally crowded bars this is a place for you to drink. Stick to be PBR or you will end up with a ridiculous bar tab, just like me. The DJ spun some Triple Six and it was all good.

Pros: Delicous Food and Lots of Atmosphere.

.

the ONLY bar in Georgia where they get bar food right. They have unmarked tubes of sauces(one which even the greatest of palates cannot decipher), the greatest deal on Pabst Blue Ribbon( 3 bucks for a 24 oz. can), and waitresses/bartendresses that are so adorbale and hot(and taken), as a guy you wish you were gay, and as a gal you wish you were gay(it makes sense)....just be sure to ask for Colleen to make fun of ya and eat three bales of free popcorn!

This past weekend, after a terrible steak dinner with a visiting friend from NYC, I told him, let's go to Ponce, for the otherside look of Atlanta. Down to the basement of the Clairmont Lounge. He thought I was crazy. Then I introduced him to Blondie, and he knew I was crazy. Afterwards, I told him I was not through with him yet. We walked into The Local, for a tall, cold can of PBR. He wanted a glass, I told him, not in here. First thing, was an order of the Belgian Fries, in wax paper, with a little malt vinegar on top. My friend, could not stop eating them. They are terrific, drunk or not. He had a chopped BBQ pork sandwich, and I ordered the babyback ribs. I think he is still licking his fingers, all the way back to NYC.

Pros: The Ultimate Neighborhood Beer Bar, Fries, & Que!

Cons: Parking can be a little confusing at first, Safe!

Just adding a newer review to say that I think it's more crowded these days than when the previous reviews were written. Friday & Saturday nights, at least when I've been there, have been elbow-to-elbow and pretty noisy.

The Local has a great laid back atmosphere and the drinks are cheap. The regulars and bartenders are friendly and that really sets this place apart for me. Drinks are cheap and the super-sized PBR cans rule. My only question for the owners is where's the Ms. Pac Man???

You won't find better chopped BBQ in Atlanta in my opinion: the meat is fresh, you get a choice of 6 sauces, and the portions are generous. The hush puppies are little but extremely good. I always get an extra side of the puppies! The burgers are pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Unless you just have to have a burger, stick with ribs or chopped BBQ. The service is excellent: they don't pester you, but they don't ignore you either. The draft is always great.

I completely disagree with the idiot below who thinks the local is 'crunchier than thou' or anything less than completely accessable and an easy relaxed environment. No this is not a trendy buckhead wannabe-just some good people and good food. Atlanta is pretty poor on the BBQ-i personally like pulled pork sandwiches and, although they can't compete with slow roasted, hickory and oak smoked BBQ from N. Tennessee, it comes pretty damn close! I don't see what the fuss is about their french fries-they leave something to be desired in my book but they are prepared from fresh potatoes rather than frozen bags of spuds.

The local has a great tap and always has something going on-team trivia on wednesdays and kareoke on Mondays. Come and see the local, we use this place for club meetings everyweek and have never felt uncomfortable or had bad service.

Cheers,
JJ

Belgian fries, they say. I don't know. But, they have the skins still on one or two sides, they sit in a cone of waxed paper in a glass, malt vinegar and sea salt are served with them. I don't care if they are healthy or not, these are great fries. Barbeque is much beter than average, too. Wait staff is friendly. This is a great bar.

You think karaoke is raucous? Wait until you've watched 10 people make a simultaneous dive toward the trivia pitcher to throw in their answer before time runs out. The place gets packed on Wednesday night with some of Atlanta's smarmiest know-it-alls. The good bar food (fries, pizzas) and fairly cheap beer keep the crowd here happy.

This place is laid back and cool. It's a great place to get away from the new "Buckhead" that the Highlands have become. The staff is friendly, the ribs are great, and the jukebox rocks. I've never been on Karaoke night but it sounds like a blast!

The Local is friendly, atmospheric and inviting --everything a great neighborhood bar should be. Its dark wooden interior sets a great low-key tone for dates or just hanging out with friends. A newly opened expansion alleviates crowding on Wednesday and weekend nights, and the front patio is a good spot on breezy evenings. The menu is decent (I like the burger a lot) and there's an impressive drink selection as well. The small parking lot can be a problem (Marco's next door will tow you away, so be warned). A favorite after-work destination.
