We anticipated a great food experience. The only thing enjoyable was the atmostphere and entertainment. \r
We ordered the Chef's meal which was extremely over priced for the amount of food you get. It's a sampler type meal served family

In reading the 2009 review a light bulb went off. Change of ownership!! Ah Hah! Finally an explanation. While the menu is the same, the portions and quality are not. As only one example, the gyro platter used to be HUGE, thick juicy portions of meat. Now they are small thin and dry. The steak is overcooked and oversalted. On three recent occasions, we actually had to request the hummus. This used to come to the table as soon as you were seated. Service is sketchy at best. I have been so disappointed the last three times. Now I know why -- new owners. Looks like the May reviewer had a good experience but our July and August visit with out of town guests was not good. They liked the entertainment but not the food. We might give it one more try -- but just one more.

SO...Surprised someone hasn't posted a review for Taverna Plaka in awhile...this place is awesome- took a date here and it was really good food (you make the hummus at the table!) and the belly dancing was sweet (good distraction/fun for a 1st date) although it was KINDA loud- suggest maybe sitting on the patio for any intense conversations.

Overall, great experience wanted to share since it didn't look like anyone had posted a review in awhile. WIll definitely be back!

Great place for a double date or a group night out. The mojitos are quite tasty and the family dinner gives just the right amount of everything with plenty to spare.

After reading, from another reviewer, that this restaurant has recently become newly owned/operated, it may explain the poor experience we had last time we dined at Taverna Plaka. We are always on the search for new, authentic Greek food and have usually been pleased with Taverna Plaka for the past several years. We always take friends/family there, and typically stick to the meze. The service has always been slighty below average, but we overlooked it because of the food quality and fun atmosphere. However, on our last visit in Jan 09, the service and poor quality/value of food served was hard to overlook. Plaka is a great place for large parties on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, they don't value the patronage of tables under five, and it can turn into a long, frustrating and dissatisfying dining experience. The last time we went the meze portions were minuscule, cold and flavorless. We had to ask several times for the complimentary hummus and bread that is customarily given as soon as your are seated. Drinks were never refilled. Some of the meze we ordered never even came out. Overall, it was a complete let down after years of good food and fun times at Plaka. I realize businesses are hurting from the current economic climate and recession, but this one obvsiously was not. It's extremely poor business to compromise quality and portions, but still charge customers the same amount. If we do decide to go back, it will be a very long time.....

Great place for dinner, drinks and entertainment. I have been going to Plaka for happy hours and dinner for years. It continues to be great food and great atmosphere. We've had many small celebration dinners with friends there. Belly dancers are fun and friendly. I recommend it!

Worst customer service from new owner ever!!

New owner took over on 12/12 and would not honor a $50 gift certificate purchased online even though it was not expired and we were not informed from restaurantdotcom that they were no longer accepting them. They only had a very small sign on the door saying we are no longer accepting Restaurantdotcom certificates as of 12/12 - the night we had dinner.

We spoke to the General Manager and got no where and then asked to speak to the owner. He could not be bothered! He had no intensions of coming over and speaking to us to try and resolve the issue - even though was walking around the restaurant looking busy. POOR Customer Service!! All they did was send us over shots and said - sorry not honoring it.

We spent over $200 on our tab and have been loyal customers for years and have brought A LOT of business to this restaurant but will never go back after this experience!

Do NOT recommend and we will not be coming back - food was average! The old owners of Taverna Plaka opened up a new Greek restaurant in Alpharetta called Veranda Greek Taverna - would suggest going there - much better service, food, and atmosphere!

I arranged a surprise party for a group of 30 people and this restaurant was the best choice for the mix of people that attended! They provided great service, with a friendly waitress that was very accomodating to each individuals needs. Not one person at my table had any complaints or mischarges on thier bills. The atmosphere was great for all ages and personalities. The employees and entertainment was very festive and lively. The belly dancers were a great added source of entertainment and were very friendly as well. The food was amazing!!!! Everything was tender and tasteful with ALOT of flavor. We opted for the chef's menu which was fairly priced for the large portions of food that they served us. The drinks were average prices for Atlanta too! Great recommendation for parties or a group of friends that want to have a great time and enjoy some entertainment and delicious food!!!

I recently organized a party for forty people in the private room. The manager could not have been more accomodating and helpful. The servers and bartenders were an absolute joy, and the food was delicious. Many guests were unfamiliar with Greek food and had fun mashing their own hummus. The belly dancer also added to the excitement of the night. Many in our group were new to our company, but the family-style service and the overall atmosphere really helped with the bonding experience. Opa!

While the food was decent and the restaurant was a fun experience, we nor our friends or family will ever come back. The manager was the most unprofessional mgr at a restaurant that I've ever seen. She tried to start a fight with us because she was stressed out. She has no customer service skills and just a plain ugly attitude. Glass in your food is a problem that needs to be taken care of I'd say. Also, the parking lot is a disaster. I'd say bring your business someplace better like Kyma down the road or Avra.

I went to Plaka for the first time with a group of about six friends. We must have gotten there before peak hours because there was no one else in our seating area but the night crowd started to arrive as we were leaving. Our waiter was very friendly and energetic and all the food was fresh and delicious. Great ambience, fun atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone.

Very very bad food, everything tasted overcooked or old, the complimentary hummus was ok, but I feel sick nothing was worth comming back from, find another place to eat Greek food. The service was ok. There was a very average belly dancer (my partner used to work for a morrocan restaurant were they really had some amazing belly dancers) but she never came to our table, maybe we didn't look like big tippers!.

Our bad experience happened before we even got to the restaurant. I made reservations this past week at 7:00 as recommended by the lady on the phone. We had 8 people who were going to be there. Right before I left tonight, I called the restaurant to see if they could seat 10 people at our table since another couple decided to join us. They informed me that the reservation was for 9:45, not 7:00. The nighttime manager got on the phone to tell me there was nothing she could do for me...we were out of luck even tho it was their fault. She was not apologetic and was rude. SO...my recommendation IF you decide to go there is to call every night to make sure they don't switch YOUR time! I don't think it is worth the drive to get there...we found a much nicer restaurant that was very accomodating and polite!!!

I've only gotten their food to go (and take to a bunch of girls we were having over one night). We thought the food was very satisfying--authentic and wholesome. Greek food is very healthy for you, so when you want something better than fast-food, check it out.

From the beginning of entering the restaurant, my friends and i were greated rudely. The restaurant manager specifically was completely unprofessional and rude. When we were finally seated, the service was awful even though the restaurant was not even that busy. The food was good but it was not worth the awful service or the high prices. I would not recommend this restuarant to anyone. Awful place!!

I have been to Taverna Plaka a total of 4 times and have had widely different experiences each time. The first two times I went the experience was great. The food was excellent and so was the service. The third time I went was with a large group for a friend's birthday. My experience that time was absolutely terrible. The waitress was rude and most of the dishes she brought out were incorrect. She gave us two plates of one item when we had only ordered one. She then tried to charge us for the 2nd plate. After much arguing (the waitress actually yelled at us and stormed off), we had a manager come over who wasn't any nicer. That's when the waitress suddenly had an epiphany and remembered that we had not ordered the 2nd plate. She apologized and bought us all drinks as a way of saying "I'm sorry" but it was too little too late and we had already turned sour to Taverna Plaka. I went again a few months ago with some friends. The food was excellent as always but once again the service was poor. Our server was moonlighting as a bartender at the same time so he was hardly ever at our table.

I rate this place as average since I've had two good experiences mixed in with two bad experiences.

I went to TP last night for my friend's bday. I had read the reviews on here before and was afraid our service would be bad. I agree that it was sporadic, but our waitress came around pretty often and seemed like she was having a good time. I probably won't go here again, just b/c I could spend less money and have a quiet dinner at a restaurant whose food I like more; but it was for my friend's bday and whatever made her happy was good with me that night. My boyfriend & I are vegetarian, so there wasn't much on the menu for us, but I would recommend the Greek salad. The other reviewer was right on about the red pepper dip - it tasted just like pimento cheese - so in other words, not very good. If you are dining w/ people who enjoy a loud, fun atmosphere, then go here. But if you think your guests would rather have a quiet meal, this is definitely not the place. Plus the food was not all that great for the price. My current favorite restaurant is Fuego off of Crescent, where you can get a much cheaper meal with much more flavor.

This is my second time at TP, the first time I wasnt sure Id come back.. although the service was attentive and friendly, the food.. well.. it was just .. ok.. I landed up going there again this week and the food this time was much much better!! did they change the chef????
Since I come from that part of the world.. Im quite picky when it comes to Greek food.. but, really, the 2nd time was nice and tasty. The service remains excellent!
I would recommend going there mid-week as weekends is a bit crazy.
Btw, whats up with belly dancing?? not very Greek and a little irritating when people stop eating and start staring .. well.. not my cuppa tea!

We have been to Taverna Plaka a number of times on trips to Atlanta. We live in a town that doesn't have decent Greek food, and TP never failed to please...until last night. It was our one year wedding anniversary and we chose TP because we'd loved it so much before.

The first disappointment was that the bar didn't have any Tsiporo, which my husband loves. The bartender was wonderful, and we enjoyed talking with him. I think the wine prices are way too high, probably to compensate for the relatively inexpensive 'martinis'. We ordered the red pepper dip to eat with our drinks. A good sized bowl of it came, but with only one pita bread cut into four wedges. We got more bread, but it did seem odd. My first taste of the dip was astonishing. If I hadn't been told it was red pepper dip, I would have sworn I was eating off the shelf pimento cheese spread. Not nearly enough feta, and obviously bottled red peppers that didn't taste roasted.

After perusing the drastically reduced menu (which has probably 20 or so 'mezes' (small bites, I think...appetizers, in other words ... and about 12 main dishes) we considered going somewhere else, and really we should have. We were seated inside, at our request, though it was clear they wanted to seat us on the patio. The evening was hot and muggy, and outside didn't seem like a great place to be to us. Our waiter was an experience. It really seemed he was drunk.

We finally ended up settling on lamb kabobs (two skewers of about 4 pieces each, overcooked, with a few tiny pieces of overcooked veggies) which were served on a pita with a mound of tzatziki. No side. We filled in with the shrimp and feta. The shrimp was actually quite good. We also had lemon roasted potatoes -- as an appetizer?? The potatoes were undercooked and tasteless.

Our bartender had told us they'd remodeled recently, and had new cooks. I suspect they also have new owners who are trying to cut costs. We won't go back and we're sad.

First time to Taverna and I will be back. We didn?t have a reservation, but were seated promptly given there were only two of us. Great place for parties and large groups. Bring singles to tip the belly dancers. Throw caution to the wind and dance on the tables. The food was good. However, according to my date the menu selection and the portions have gotten smaller. Great service.

This place has energy! I had my birthday party here last year and it was a riot...From the belly dancing to the dancing ala "hava nagela" style, this was a place to have a ton of fun.

Cons: it couldn't last forever

Taverna was accomodating of our large group in terms of seating us at a long table set apart from most of the other diners. The tapas menu had a decent variety of reasonably priced traditional greek fare from salads to flaming cheese. The belly dancers were entertaining and the entire staff participated in the fun. The only thing that could be improved was the service which was a little slow and sporadic.

I was there last Thursday with my friends for a birthday party. I had nissiotiko swordfish and my boyfrind ordered lamb chops. Absolutely Delicious!! The music was the best mediterrenian I have heard so far in Atlanta. Dj Aris played every song we asked for. The drinks were not that great and the waitor not so friendly. Other than that, everything was AWSOME!!

A fun palce to go with a group to watch the dancers and listen to the music, the food is not very good! Really Greasy, and not well prepared. Would not go back to eat, but maybe have a drink!

We reserved a table for 20 but got one for 15. Several people had to stand up during dinner. ervice was terrible! Those that got the family style meal did not get everything that was ordered. The dishes had tiny portions that did not go very far. They expected dinner, not an appetizer. 3 of us got entrees rather than the family meal. We reminded our waiter several times to bring them out. Mine and the other gal's were very cold. We sent them back and did not eat that night. We asked the waiter several times for drink refills that never came.

When they turned on the music for the Bellydancers to come out, they put on a good show. Alas, they spent all their time in front of only two tables and would not wander through the restaurant. Large columns blocked our view for most of the performance.

Wow... What a let down. We made reservations early on New Year's Eve. We were the only customers in the restaurant. They sat us on the patio, which was FREEZING! and ignored us for quite a while. We didn't get theappetizers that were included in the price of the dinner. The food was good, but nothing to write home about. Then the waiter added a 20% gratuity, which he didn't deserve or inform us ahead of time that he was going to do! When we changed it to 15% he had the nerve to come and correct us. In summary... lousy service, we were treated like lepers not being allowed to come to the main dining area, good food... SMALL portions, and an arrogant waiter! Won't be back... not worth it!

I've been to the amazing restaurant a few times, never a wait. The servers at Paka are excellent and the food it great. There was excitement in the air. As youre enjoying your meal the belly dancers come around for more fun, just bring your dollars ;).

Reservations would be cool but not always necessary. Ive never made a reservation and my group has always been seated promptly, perhaps it depends on where you would like to sit. I went on a Friday night at 9:00 with group of 3 and was seated immediately.

I can't really say it's an atmosphere for kids, but it was kind of cute to see an 8-year-old boy there with his dad tipping the belly dancer, I may be wrong but it was cute. Paka isn't really romantic, but how can a couple not see more in each other through the happiness they experience.

Some friends and I just were there not to long ago, and we had a fantastic time. Great food and great fun!! The service was excllent. We had this one waiter named Derrick ( I think the only American that works there ) Very nice and was always there for anything we needed! So ask for him. With that, the bellydancers and the music, all and all we give Plaka two thumbs UP

My friends and I have had two or three large birthday parties in this lovely establishment. Get there early so you can hear each other but WATCHOUT!! At eight or eight thirty they turn the music up (think greek club music) and the bellydancers come out. I myself figured I would hate that part but they are truly intriguiging (sp?) even I as a straight woman thought damn how did she do that? The food ROCKS! Eat EVERY hot appetizer and the lamb chops are to die for. Service sucks but I think it is the language barrier. all in all as a former server, I still give this place a 10 because it is a hell of alot of fun! Dance on tables and throw napkins in the air as you scream OPA!!!!!!

I went with 4 of my friends, and we had the best time! The waiter was very nice and helpful in choosing what to get. The belly dancer was great, as well as all the other people dancing. The atmosphere was *awesome*, and the food was excellent. I highly recommend the Gyro, shaved roast lamb. YUM!! I am already recommending this restaurant to all my friends and family. People are complaining about the service, but remember - this is a GREEK restaurant, not an American one; therefore, it will have Greek culture. Greeks consider eating out a social experience to be enjoyed and to last a long time. The waiter wants you to enjoy your time without interrupting you. That's the culture; do not get upset about it. Just learn to mold into other cultures and have a good time.

The service was terrible and the food was marginal at best. The worst part was that it took 40 minutes just for them to bring us our bill and then another 20 minutes to run our credit card. We had a large group so gratuity was added to our bill. By no means did the service warrant a 20% tip. To top it off, the valet asked me for a bigger tip since it was after 10 pm when we left. I will never go back.

If this place is anywhere near as bad as some reiewers have said, why do you suppose there's a two-hour wait? Wouldn't people get wise eventually?

The only good thing I had there was the hummus they bring you to grind up yourself. That was very tasty and creative. However, I was very dissapointed after that. My food was so bad it was literally inedible, and the service was terrible. I guess it might be ok to come here if you are interested in partying with your friends, but don't expect edible food or good drinks. I was hoping for something better, but unfortunately I have to give this place a big thumbs down...

My boyfriend and I went to Taverna Plaka after a friend recommended we go. It was a terrible experience! The back room was practically empty and we still had to flag down our waiter. The food was not good at all and over priced. I say thumbs down on Taverna Plaka.

Taverna came highly recommended to us and the place was a huge disappointment. Not only did we wait 40 minutes to be seated while others who arrived later (same number in their party) were seated before us but the servers were rude and the bellydancers were a joke. The food is overpriced and come in the tiniest portions known to man. The only good thing about this place is that the portions of food they do serve are delicious.

While the Taverna has a "fun" atmosphere, it's more of a club than a restaurant. The problem comes when they try to merge the two. What you get is no available seats, poor and unwelcoming service, and the food is sub-par.

Reservations don't mean anything, and you wait an additional 1.5 hours at the bar. People waiting at the tables for service are constantly appealing to the manager, who appeases those complaining by buying shots. The food sounds far better on the menu than it tastes, and greek basics are made poorly. Late night (inevetable given the pace of service) the place is literally converted into a club, and the music goes to insane volumes (people are stuffing napkins in their ears).

Plaka's fame is for after 11, when the front room is alive w/ folks from all over. music is a mix from the Middle East, India, Greece, & Latin America.back room is Latin music mixed w/ Brazilian & house.I love the place b/c the atmosphere is so non-american.People dont come here to get trashed & hook up like they do at american clubs. Here the mindset is to be with friends, blow off some steam after a long work week, etc. different mentality, atmosphere, & mindset...& a different kind of fun!If you want to bring 20 of your friends & have this great dining experience, then come at like 6 pm on Fri/Sat or on a weekday.Request the back room. youll get more than decent service & the food will be pretty good. The food isnt great but i really dont think it was meant to be.

Went to Taverna for the beginning of my friend's bachelorette party. I was HIGHLY disappointed with this place. Maybe it was that my expectations were set high by a friend that had recommended it, but whatever it was, I will never go back nor tell anyone to try it out. My reservation was made well in advance and we were not seated until about an hour after the reservation. We were seated in the outdoor area, in a corner where we could not even try to enjoy the atmosphere. The belly dancers were too skinny and had nothing to shake. We saw our server maybe once or twice and when she finally got around to it, she brought out mediocre food that we all half-finished. There are much better places in Atlanta to celebrate-I wanted this to be a great spot but, it just ain't.

Ear-splitting music played in an atmosphere-less room paired with really bad food and gratuitous bell-dancing? Yuck. A complete waste of time. My date and I left after the grisly and greasy sausage appetizer. There are so many other great restaurants in Atlanta to choose from. Avoid this one.

Taverna Plaka had come highly recommended and was a great disappointment. The food is average, the atmosphere bland, and the service staff awful. They sell the restaurant with the fun funky atmosphere but they kick you out to refill your seats with more customers the second you pay the bill. For a welcoming and fun environment with great food try Istanbul Cafe, it's great!!

The mezze, or small plates, are the best options at Taverna Plaka. We especially like the hummus, for which you'll be handed a bowl of seasoned garbanzo beans and a mortar and pestle with which to mash them. Also good are the grilled…
