This is my first message, but I really wanted to make sure that my voice was heard.

My son who is now five, attended the local Montessori school for three years. We became dismayed with the progress that we saw in our son and became increasingly interested in finding another school for our son to attend. We had heard great things from several people about the Spirit of Excellence Christian School. Each person boasted about the fact that students from that school were well above average in test scores for the county (some scoring the highest in the county). We deciced to delve further, Last year after meeting with the staff and viewing the atmoshpere (we dropped in for a visit unannounced) and behavior of the children, we decided to enroll our son for the 2007-2008 school year. The fees are inexpensive and from our view point, the students are handled in christian love. The staff is very devoted to our children and impart in them christian values and a love for the LORD. This school prides itself on teaching our children the be proud of who they are and to take responsibility for their actions. They are taught to speak up for themselves and how important it is to have good behavior as that is direct product of self love.

Even after the reading luvdolphins "below average" comment, I am still convinced that the Spirit of Excellence is a much needed breath of fresh air in a world that is so quick to look to everything and everyone else to educate, disclipine, and mold our children into productive members of society. God provides guidence on all of these things. The Spirit of Excellence is truly imparting that spirit on our children and I thank GOD for that.

** As a side note, this school as been around 20 years. I know personally several children, now young adults, that are products of this school. They have all grown up to be some of the most disciplined, well rounded and intelligent young people I know. All have done well in and finished college!

Pros: Wonderful Christian Education

Today, as I had my nephew, and another child I care for, we went to the city park across from the Spirit of Excellence school. I was not impressed by the lack of teachers I saw present with the children as they crossed the street to the park, nor with the teachers interaction with the children. There were 50 children, YES, I counted, ranging in age 2 to maybe 5 to early 6 year old children. ONLY 2 TEACHERS. This is way out of the state approved guidelines for the child to teacher ratios. For instance-in a room of 2 year olds, they should be 1 teacher for every 8 children. 2 for any more than that up to 16. And over 16, should have 3 teachers.
Most of the children I saw today were around 3 and 4 years old. There were a handful that looked to only be 2 years of age. I asked one of the teachers if they were short of help today. She said no, the others were coming. I also witnessed the teachers grab one child, a small boy, around 2, by his arm. His feet were not touching the ground and he was placed back into the circle. I understand, as having been a preschool teacher for many years, that it is often hard to keep everyone focused on the activity.
The time frame that is suitable for older children, is not suitable for the younger children during circle time and group times. They do not have the attention spans as the 4 and 5 year old children have and should have activities separately based on their age.
I gathered my children and left. I went across the street and spoke with the director of the center. I asked her about the child -teacher ratios. And I let her know that I was very much aware that she was not in the guidelines. And I also informed her of the teacher that grabbed the small boy by his arm. She said they were only to redirect children, not grab any of them or pick them up by their arm as such.
These children are our gifts from God, they should be taken care of much more closely.

Cons: not enough teacher to child ratio
