Persepolis is an authentic Persian restaurant in Sandy Springs. It is a favorite to Atlanta's Persian community. The interior is polished & cozy, with white tablecloths & decorative columns. The two dining areas resemble residential living rooms from the Middle East converted for public use. Dinner comes with complimentary "taftoun," a delicious homemade flatbread, which can be used for the various dipping appetizers. It comes with a plate of mint, cilantro, feta cheese, radishes & butter. The weekday lunch buffet is a highlight at this restaurant. The popular dishes include hummus, kashk-o-bodenjoon, dolma, sauteed eggplant, basmati rice dishes, rack of lamb & Shish Kebob entrees. We offer a selection of Kebobs including chicken, beef or lamb. The meats are tender & the portions generous. Join us on Thursday thru Saturday nights to enjoy the live entertainment with Belly Dancers.

Editorial by

The Scene
Persian families take their place among decorative columns and fake plants in this low-slung Sandy Springs building, but plenty of others have discovered the cozy, polished destination for Middle Eastern favorites. Watch out for the weekend belly dancer--her scarves can go awry and come close to being skewered by your kabob. Service is friendly and helpful.

The Food
The combo appetizer platter holds some of the best selections, including a cooling yogurt and cucumber sauce, dolma (grape leaves wrapped around ground sirloin, rice, vegetables and herbs) and a killer sauteed eggplant. Shish kabobs, skewers of marinated, charbroiled beef tenderloins with hunky slices of bell peppers and onions, are familiar, but lamb and chicken make excellent alternatives. Don't miss the sticky sweet vegetarian albaloo polo--a skewer of charbroiled veggies and steamed basmati with glazed, pitted sour cherries that explode on the tongue like mini-landmines.

Key Points

  • Weekday Lunch Buffet
  • Weekend Belly Dancers
  • Catering Available

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Use the complimentary taftoun, a piece of soft, warm flatbread, to pick up garnishes of radishes, cheese, raw onion and butter and dipping appetizers.
  2. When to Go - The weekday lunch buffet (11:30am-3pm) includes rice, stews, lamb shank, chicken kabobs and a salad bar.
  3. The Extras - Persian ice cream gets old quickly with its cloying rosewater scent. Instead, order the faloudeh (frozen rice noodles) and top with tart lemon juice to cover up the soapy taste.

Incredibly rude; miserable service; amazing food.

by A R.

Besides rudely pointing to where my friend and I could sit when we walked in, there was absolutely no contact with the server until (as SOON as we were done eating), she came over and handed us a bill. She never even asked if we wanted anything besides water to drink - but we noticed people at other tables all had wine, Coke, etc. When I called after we left, she told me that the "regulars" know to just flag down a server if they want something. But what are the "first timers" supposed to do, besides think that the service is simply awful??
Besides all that ... the food in the lunch buffet was absolutely amazing. I'm a huge fan of Persian food, and (besides homemade), this was one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. For that reason only, I'm willing to give this place one more chance - I'm a lawyer in town and could give them some good business by taking clients there, but not unless they clean up their act.

place that you want to experience

by Sabah H.

Great authentic cuisine ..., went there with my girlfriend who is American and I am Middle Eastern. We both loved and enjoyed it.Great dining experience! But But But !!! there was one waitress who has short hair and is slightly (but not much) older than others-she was not very friendly and had a "not so great" attitude; we had several waiters, however, who were wonderful except for that one in particular. Pretty good persian buffet

by Chandra C.

Was in Roswell for a training class and remembered this place from several years ago. The food is as great as I remembered from then. The meat kabobs and flavors are unique and great. The rice biryanis with saffron tinted flavor is nice. The cheese platters, pickled vegetables and fresh salads are good too. The bread they cut out and put in the buffet was a little stale. But saw the waitresses bringing fresh to some tables. Maybe you need to ask for that. Did not have time in my case.
Tip was included in the bill. Did not notice that and added some by mistake. Watch for that.
Not a daily lunch option due to being on the expensive side but once in a while is pretty good.

terrible food, worst service ever experienced at a restaurant.

by Trisha S.

We've been going to this restaurant for 3 years now. Service has always been terribly poor unless you are white. There is a distinct difference in treatment towards non-white customers. But the food has been pretty good until recently and price is still affordable. The short haired waitress will probably remain waitress for the rest of her life because of her horrible attitude. Now a days food sucks and with less than minimum customer no service they tried to add gratuity to our bill! Tips is to earn and can not be taken. There is no need to make appointment anymore because they have successfully made the customers run away from terrible service!

Best Iranian Food

by Shervin H. | insider Insider | Rank: 27,179

This restaurant has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods and offers a relaxing and comfortable setting. The people are nice and make you feel at home. Their kabobs are really good, specially their koobideh and their joojeh kabobs. They have a new owner but the service is still great. Unfortunately the music is not very tasteful.

Absolutely amazing

by Deborah W.

I been in several Persian restaurants across Canada and the USA and this is, by far, one of the best. I was there on Saturday, September 10, 2005. The service was wonderful and the food was uncomparable. The music and ambiance was also very exotic adding to the complete experience. Don't pass this place by.....

Mediterranean Cuisine

by Bilal A.

They have the best kabobs and medeterrianian food. They are located in an older building off of Roswell Rd (I-285). The waiters are not very fluent in english, but the food is the best in Atlanta. Make sure you try their yogurt and cucumber dip.

Awesome food and cool international store

by Kristen B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 12,183

This place is great if you love kabobs. They are attached to a small international grocery store as well, where you can find anything! From henna, to nuts, to middle eastern sweets and vegetables. Great place!

Great kabobs

by Hina B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 513

They have some of the best kabobs in the atlanta area. Although if you are a kosher meat eater, sometimes they don't have kosher beef or chicken, you have to call ahead to find out. Their garlic shrimp kabobs are delicious.

If you have the entertainment coupon book, there is a buy one get one free coupon in there.

It's kind of hard to find this place b/c it's hiden behind a grocery store.

Worst Service ever had

by reviewlr

Had 3 waitresses and 1 manager who sat and did nothing. Couldn't even get their attention as they sat and talked to each other as if they had no customers. We were one of three tables and no one got service. All were upset. Some banged on plates to get attention and some yelled across empty restaurant. I thought that was rude, but it appeared the only to get service.

Pros: very good food

Cons: no service at all

Good but could be better

by revmany

I have been here many times. Both ala Carte and buffet. Never had any issue in the ala carte. I have the chicken kebabs or barg... both are excellent and are much better than the buffet versions (hot and soft).
The buffet has a lot of meat and veggie stuff. Overall a good value.

Their starter bread (lavash I think) is the best.

The service could be a little better. The big TV in the dining room of a classy restaurant is a disaster! I dont know who came up with that idea.

The prices could be a little lower for better value after all they are in a dumpy location. A Saturday buffet would be a good option.

Pros: Great food, excellent bread

Cons: Location hard to find, parking,price-to-value

Not worth your time

by sharont14

The food is actually not that bad, but I have had MUCH better. The rice was dry and the meat was a little too fatty. The service was absolutely awful. The waitress sat there and laughed loudly the entire time. Other staff of the restaurant sat at a table together and talked about people and as we left they continued to laugh and be rude. You are supposed to be a classy restaurant and treat your paying customers with respect. If you must be loud and rude, please go to the back, or wait till your customers are gone. You can laugh at whatever all you want, the joke is ultimately on YOU because you are ruining the reputation of your restaurant. Also, the cups and utensils were very dirty. The guy came out with the bread on a small plate holding it with his bare hands so it did not fall off. It was disgusting!

Basically what I am saying is that if you want true quality Persian food from the respectful classy Iranians that SHOULD be serving it, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO GO. And the guy in the connected Persian Grocery store is the RUDEST individual I have ever met. I was very disappointed with my experiences.

Pros: Decent food, good portionns

Cons: awful service

A very enjoyable restaurant.

by jdglobal

I've eaten here several times and shopped in the attached Middle Eastern grocery store. I've spent a large portion of my adult life in the Middle East and know what good food should taste like.

I have found that the servers are willing to spend time with the customers and explain the food items. On one occasion when the food preparation was slow, they apologized profusely and did not charge.

The portions are large and generous and the food has always been delicious.

Unlike the other reviewers, I never noticed anything unsanitary at all or been unable to communicate with the servers.

Afterwards, since my family loves cooking Middle Eastern food, we enjoy the opportunity to shop for hard to find ingredients in the grocery store.

I highly recommend Perseopolis for an enjoyable evening. In fact, I just made reservations for a dinner party tomorrow night.

Pros: Ample portions of delicious food and attentative service.

Cons: The service can be slow.

Good food, decent service, could be better

by RobertoC

This used to be my favorite Persian restaurant. Then they stopped service fresh bread automatically for buffets And they increased the price. Plus, they were getting to be slow in filling the beef section of the buffet. So I stopped going regularly for a while. But now, the restaurant seems to be back close to its original quality.

This used to be coowned by the guy who ended up starting Rumi's Kitchen. The quality seemed sporadic under the new owners. But now things are better.

I have had their alacarte in the past, but not recently. Solid good quality kabobs of all types. The price is reasonable though a tad on the pricey side.

Let me spend more time on the buffet review. They have a little bit more variety on the buffet. They have good stuffed grape leaves as a regular item now. They have three beds of different rice, one of them being white with a saffron streak. Grilled tomatoes that used to be served during dinner along with the kabobs are now frequently available during buffets.

Other daily lunch buffet items are chicken kabobs, beef filet strips, beef koubideh, lamb shank. Then they also serve two other meat dishes rotating among lamb stew, chicken promegranate sweet stew. They all taste good.

They got fresh fruit from time to time. And for a while, they had this bad habit of putting out cold flat bread stacked in a basket. Now , they have gone back to serving hot flatbread with poppy seeds to you personally upon request. I find this to be the tastiest bread of all the persian places.

And I have noticed the meat trays getting filled regularly in my last few recent trips. Hopefully, this place won't slip up again like they did in the past.
Suggestions: I wish they would add a Saturday afternoon buffet.

Pros: Food(best persian bread when fresh)

Cons: Consistency suffers sometimes. Pricey buffet

Dis-bloody-gusting

by LilyH

I'm an American woman who has worked in the middle east extensively. I speak decent English, French, and Arabic. I went here with a group (the mandatory 18% gratuity was a source of much derogatory comment, since the service was inattentive and rude). I wished to order from the very limited vegetarian menu and asked (in all 3 languages) whether the food was vegan. I got blank stares, rolled eyes, tossed head...a complete failure to care whether or not the food met my needs. The server then proceeded to recommend (in Arabic) that I just eat from the $12.99 lunch menu, despite their being only 1-2 boring vegetarian dishes and despite my still having gotten no real answer to the question of vegan food. There is plenty of delicious vegan Persian food, most of it easy to prepare with ingredients that were obviously used in preparing the other dishes. Any decent server would have offered to speak to the chef. This one wanted me to pay $16 for rice and a dessicated veggie shish-kabob. And if my cleaner was as neglectful of corners as theirs appears to be, I'd fire her. The place was...not exactly filthy but certainly not clean. Yuck. They reminded me of the sort of place that parks itself by the airport and lures the tourists in before they know any better.

Pros: Can't think of any.

Cons: Stinking service, dirty restaurant, ridiculous tipping policy

Found a hair in the rice, ask the waitress to change it but found another or the same hair in the ?new? rice?I guess it was the same rice. The waitresses are the worst, they are rude and they want you to eat what they tell you.

Bad and expensive food and even worse service

by Hatebadfoodandservice

This was my first time at Persepolis and my last. Went with a group of people (10) and wanted to order from the menu. Staff was NO help in educating me on what everything was and I felt "bullied" into eating from lunch buffet (NOT WORTH $12.99). After stumbling through the line and asking what everything was, I was reluctantly told what a few things were; but, clearly, they were annoyed that I wasn't knowledgeable about their food. After lunch when the bill came, I was shocked to see they added 18% gratuity (WHAT? TO FILL MY WATER GLASS ONCE AFTER I FLAGGED DOWN THE WAITER!!!). 18% gratuity for a buffet?! What a rip-off! Now, two hours later and almost $20.00 poorer, I'm hungry! Bad and expensive food and even worse service. Don't go!

Terrible service, cold atmosphere, and average food

by judy005

Unfortunately we made the mistake of going to Persepolis for a second time. We thought the terrible service we were given the first time was just the restaurant having a bad night. But the second time, it was the same thing all over again. With all the wonderful restaurants to go to in Atlanta, not worth trying. Two Thumbs DOWN all around from the service and atmosphere to the food.

Cons: service, ambience,

Simply..........The Worst!!!!!!!!!

by 422

I made the horrible mistake of taking all my family to that awful place for lunch buffet... The servers were really busy so we were not taken cared of at all. The worst of all was the ridiculous attitude of the co owner who expected me to give a big tip for something they did not earn!!!!! We did it all!!! He treated me really bad, insulting me...and so on. At least he could be gentleman enough to respect me as a lady. Food was not even great, cooked the night before and meat was not good at all... Awful, awful, awful, It is all I can say. Do NOT go there!! One star is too much for that awful place.....

Pros: none

Cons: all, bad service, awful food, co owner etc all!!!

Great Food

by BNSupra

This was the first time I had ever had Persian food and it was wonderful. I ordered the Cornish Hen with Basmati and Saffron rice and it was delicious! The hen was a little on the salty and citrus side, but it had a good bite. Even though it was a little tough it was still pretty good. The rice was my favorite part of the dish. It was rich and buttery and one of those things you just can not stop eating! The portion of the meal was also really large and I had plenty to eat there and later at home. The only drawback was that the server was not very approachable or friendly and seemed like he really did not want to be there and the location is not in the best area. I will definitely return to Persepolis and try something else.

Pros: Great food, many items to choose from, portion of food, price

Cons: Location, service could be a little more friendly

Great Persian Buffet...Excellent Food.

by hadiix

I recommend everyone to try this CUISINE at least once, to see and taste the food.
Best of all dont miss " The Lunch Buffet " which includes " BEEF & CHICKEN Kebobs "
and variety of plane and mix rice dishes .Make sure you definitely try the Vegatable Beef Stew.
and what realy makes it special is ' you get one or two HOT big flat bread, AWESOME ,which
serve as you first seat , with feta cheese, walnuts, herbs(basil, cilantro, mint), kind of like pre appetizer.
till waiteres get your order...!!
And if it happend to be weekend nights , then there is Belly-Dancers Show , LOVELY .

" BEEF & CHICKEN KEBOBS , VARIETY OF DIFFERENT RICE,
AND STEWS."
A NICE FAMILY RESTAURANT, AND ALSO WEEKEND BELLY-DANCERS.

Pros: LUNCH BUFFET & KEBOB DISHES.

Cons: NO BUFFET ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS.

Great food, but be weary of service

by desiking786

I frequent this restaurant quite a bit. The food is excellent and is the main reason why we come back. Be weary, service can really be bad sometimes and you might have to wait a long time for waiters to refill your drinks or to come and check on you. Also, watch out on to go orders, I can remember at least 3 times where they overcharged us on phone orders and did not give us all the food we ordered.

Lousy Service

by paris777

We waited for a long while to be seated and left because the 'hostess' was too busy serving up drinks to one table. One of the waiters even reminded her of us standing at the doorway (including my 2 yer old). She still ignored us. Wonder what her problem was...?

Pros: They didn't give us a chance to discover them

Cons: Was never seated

Great food, but we got ripped off!

by treat76

I've gone to Persepolis for the lunch buffet with co-workers a number of times, and we always enjoy it. Until today, when they tacked on an 18% gratuity. For a buffet. Our server came to the table twice - the first time was after we'd already gotten our food. After complaining, we were told that they always add 18% gratuity for parties of 5 or more, and they wouldn't remove it, even after being told we would no longer dine there.

Pros: Food

Cons: 18% grat. on buffet!!

"Cuisine Of Persian Empire"

by tizpar

I was introduced to Persian food back when I was in Los Angeles , where they have their biggest comunity and well over 100 Persian Resturants there, but without a doubt I can say that the food at "Persepolis Cuisine" is tastier and much more
authentic than any other resturants I tried there or here, in Atlanta, specially the Ghormeh Sabzi .
Their " BARG "(Fillet of Beef on Skewer) is their
master piece !! try it and compare it, next time that you go to a Steak House and pay $25 or more
for " fillet Menion".
Well if I had to sum it all up, I guess " Authenticity"
is the adjective I would use to describe Persepolis.

David.

Pros: Best Daily Buffet, Fresh Flat Bread, Large Portions
