Zapata has dropped a notch in the last 12 months, maybe the cook went back to Mexico, really! The Sopa Azteca was mediocre, at best it would be a good tomato based soup. Then the Chile Relleno was undercooked making the poblano chile

When I see that even a restaurant like this gets some negative reviews, I begin to lose all hope for the human race. Really, the food here is absolutely fantastic. I had always thought that a quesadilla was a quesadilla; and that you couldn't do anything to make a quesadilla extraordinary. Well, I stand corrected and duly humbled. The Picadillo Quesadilla at Zapata is simply amazing. And the Pescada Quinta Roo (the red snapper filet in a chipotle mango sauce) will teach you what "awesome" really means!

So, my husband and I went last night to Zapata in downtown Norcross. This ws our first time in the new location. What struck me as soon as we walked in was that the decor had gone down. On P'tree Pkwy they had great little tables, chairs and decoration on the walls. At this new place the tables and chairs were industrial grade cafeteria style. I'm not sure why they didn't transfer their old furniture and decor from the the previous restaurant location but clearly they must have their reasons.
The menu looked as if it had changed. They brought s chips & salsa which was something I don't remember from before. It scared me for a minute because I thought "uh oh", they've started catering to people who want a regular Mexican "El Azteca" dinner. We were ahppy to see our favorites were still on the menu. The Mole is to die for! Do you know how difficult it is to make Mole? And to do it well? It is amazing! The restaurant is one of our favorites. We absolutely love it and will return again and again....I hope that they do upgrade their furniture. It was so much nicer before.

First - ordered 2 top shelf margaritas with two different types of tequila. From our table, I saw the waiter (I don't think he was a bartender) fill two glasses 90% full with some sort of mixer and then top it off with one of the tequilas. He started to pour the same tequila into the second glass when he saw me watching and then hurried over to tell me they were out of Hornitos. I ordered a different tequila, but both margaritas tasted exactly the same and mostly like sweet and sour mix. When I ordered a second margarita I asked for Herrudura and he told me that they were out of that, but he had Hornitos.(?)
Second - I wanted to order dessert for my wife's birthday and asked for a menu. The waitress (they changed servers about halfway through the meal) said okay, started bussing some tables, swept the floor, spoke to another employee for a few minutes and then brought me a menu. While we waited for her to come back I heard the lady seated behind me say that her margarita had no alcohol in it and where did her waitress go to.
The food was not even close to the quality of what I have had in several other visits.
Maybe it was a bad night?

We had our rehearsal dinner last month at Zapata in downtown Norcross and the food/ atmosphere was exceptional! I would highly recommend using it for parties of 70 or less, great value for your dollar at this upscale authentic Mexican gem. This is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Atlanta area. Delicious and authentic. It is hard to find great mole and they have the best in my opinion.

Pros: Best Enchiladas De Mole

.

Zapata is the only Mexican restaurant that I would ever eat at because the food is well prepared and not dripping with fat like at all the other Mexican restaurants. Every time I introduced a friend to Zapata, he/she wowed to never go back to all the other lard-dripping Mexican-wanna be restaurants. If you have ever visited Mexico, you will know that what people call Mexican restaurants in the US are not even close to what Mexican food should be.
My favorite dish at Zapata's is the chicken molcajete: chicken strips, cactus leaf, green onions, fresh tomatoes cooked in tomatillo sauce and served in molcajetes with cheese on top. You also get on the side tortillas, white rice, chorizo and black beans. Worth every penny!

I really like Zapata. I usually take out lunch due to my hectic schedule but I have dined there for lunch and dinner and have always had a good experience. The pomegranate margaritas are delicioso!!
The prices are good and the food is always fresh. I love their sopes (authentic, delicious). Best of all they prepare them just however I ask and have my food ready FAST! They even include a generous portion of chips and salsa in the takeout bag. If you want spicier salsa all you have to do is ask. They make theirs with chile de arbol, tomato and a touch of avocado...yummy! You have to try to the crema de chile poblano soup...not spicy, creamy and full of flavor. I have never seen anyone do their soup like this...I found it to be very creative. The waiters are cordial yet not sappy and over friendly. The menu is kind of limited but I can tell you that it is authentic Mexican...they don't eat chimichangas or nachos in Mexico!!!

I just had lunch at Zapata and was asked to leave after an hour and 10 minutes because they wanted to give the table to people waiting. I understand turning tables, but interrupting my conversation with a friend was ridiculous. I will never eat there again.

Zapata is a breath of fresh air -- this is REAL mexican food. Don't expect Taco Bell or Fronterra-like options here. I have tried nearly everything on the menu and I like the Crepas Poblanas the most.

Bonus: Margaritas are great and cheap

i will have walked into zapatas with great anticipation and of course hunger. the service will have been very prompt and corteous. our table will be no where near the kitchen door, it will not wobble and it won't be even the slightest bit sticky, like other restaurant tables. the table itself will be assembled by a craftsman and he will have used the finest cherry woods and richest mahoganys available. the lighting will most likely have been done by burt's lighting inc. but i wll have not been able to tell till i got home later that evening and did an extensive internet search. but, after having done the search i will have learned that zapatas did indeed employ burts lighting inc, due to there well known and sought after name in the lighting and enviance for restauants.

Pros: a complete absence of flurgery, and a surplus of verblungent

Cons: several, but i believe it was a work release program

My wife and I decided to try Zapata by reading the good reviews here. Needless to say it was the worst Mexican food we had ever had. And we love our Mexican food. I dont consider the food here authentic, however confused is something that comes to mind. The freshness and quality of the food was way below average. The queso was supposed to be cheddar and when it came out was clearly Mozzarella based. The ground beef smelled like it was prepared more than a week ago. The tortillas that came with out entrees had a weird smell to them. Not to mention that the entrees were a confused combination of ingredients.

The staff there was nice but very slow. Our waiter doesnt understand the basics of serving people. He should be taught that every time to put a drink down you dont have to go over their shoulder bumping into them. He could have done it in the middle of the table too. Plus he was very slow to get our orders. And I wouldnt give this place a $ in cost, probably a $$ because its certainly not inexpensive. I dont mind that but the quality and the value of the overall meal was probably below that of a fast food joint. Save yourself the disappointment and try out the so many other authentic as well as creative Mexican joints in this neighborhood.

Pros: Cant think of any.

Cons: Everything

This is authentic wonderful Mexican food. Everything I have eaten has been delicious and though the prices are a little higher, it's worth it! Everyone I have taken there has agreed that it's amazing, even my brother the Mexican Food Snob and my Texan "Tex-Mex is the best" friends!

This place is trying to offer a gourmet type experience in mexican cuisine. We went on a Sunday and the place was not full at all. It has a pleasant interior and nice staff. The food was OK. I went for the mole, which was good but not great. The fajitas were cooked in sauce, I was expecting them grilled and dryer. They were good though. The food in general is interesting but somehow is just a bit below one expects from the descriptions on the menu. The prices are also higher than in most mexican restaurants, so of course the expectation level is raised. It is great to see that they want to offer this type of cuisine.

Restaurants are not charitable organizations. So if the prices at Zapata are the same as your local chain, then their costs are probably the same. You can either get lots of average food for a price, or less quantity of a more expensive food. So If your idea of a good meal is continuing your journey to obesity and diabetes, then stick with the free FRIED chips (CARBS) and lots of lard and cheese-laden (FAT) mexican food. There are lots of choices.

If you'd like something worth eating and still be able to stay awake the rest of the day, if loosening your belt isn't on your checklist for a quality restaurant, then go to Zapata.

Wow - what a find! Zapata is many steps above the avarage Mexican restaurant. The menu is Gourmet, Texas margarita one of the best, beautiful 'art gallery' feel to the space, couteous staff, & super clean restrooms. We look forward to going back.

BTW - they do serve chips - sounds like the previous reviewer who dinged them for no chips would be happier at the run of the mill El Aztecas of the world.

I was in the Norcross area the other day, and I remember reading good reviews for Zapata. I didn't care if it was in a strip-center. or they didn't serve salsa and chips. The place was packed at lunch time, so in I went. Well, if you like frozen T.V. Mexican dinners, at the same price, Zapata is for you. Atlanta has many budget priced Mexican spots, with really great tasty, fresh food, but this is not one of them. Maybe some nice warm chips, with good salsa might help.

Yesterday I ate at Zapata for lunch. The atmosphere was good and the place looked nice. However, while I was eating chips and dip, I bit into a staple - a very unpleasant experience. So I quietly let the waiter know that the mangled staple on the table came from their food. Without a word, he whisked it away.

I like to approach situations like this in a non-demanding way, just to test the character of the organization. I'm not interested in sueing anyone or getting a free lunch. Having grown up in a restaurant, I understand that strange things happen.

No one apologized. Not even the waiter. No one came by to make sure I didn't break a tooth or anything like that. But when I got my bill, I was given a 15% discount and the waiter boldly circled the discount to make sure I "got" it. Wow-wee, I saved $1.62 by chewing on a staple.

I will never ever even consider eating there again.

The previous reviews are pretty accurate. You get really good and original dishes, at great prices, and the restuarant is in a 'strip mall'. But really it's a nice setting, the 'strip mall' is just a few shops, obviously recently built, hey there's a Starbucks right next door! I've been in the Atlanta suburbs for a few years now and this is the best Mexican restuarant I've been to by far, and it's no more expensive than the standard taco/fajita places. I had some stew dish with beef, cactus, and tomatos served in a big piping hot lava bowl, and it was super, never seen anything like it before. Plus the kids chicken meal was a beautifully aranged plate of food which she loved. I was really impressed at the efforts they make in the quality of the food and the arrangement and presentation. I definitely recommend this place.

I've been looking for a Mexican restaurant that provides a more interesting look at what I've read is a wonderfully vast quisine. Chips, taco's etc have gotten old and one dimentional. Zapata offers a truely unique selection of mexican dishes w/ great depth of flavor.
After tasting Zapat's Chicken Enchiladas w/ Mole' Sauce I new I had finally found a truely great dish. It was spicey, but not overpoweringly hot and had just the right amount of sweetness.
For dessert I had the flan which was one of the best I've ever eaten.
This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant. It will be the one I push for when anyone mentions Mexican food.
I must admit the chips and salsa were so good we ordered a 2nd serving.
General Manager is a true host.

Having worked in Mexico it is hard to find authentic Mexican food. The food brings back great memories. Of course, their knowledge of tequila is fantastic. So if you are willing to experience the "real thing", you must go to Zapata. And no, they did not pay me, in cash or tequila, to write this review.

Kessler likes Zapata and I did too after my first visit. I had Enchiladas Verde (chicken with green mole) and it was pretty good for $9. Second visit had the Snapper w/Mango Chipotle sauce and didn't much care for it even though the fish was cooked well. It was a small serving but cost only $11 or $12. Accompanying bland vegetables had NO seasoning what so ever. Third visit had Chicken Enchiladas w/brown mole. Their brown mole was way too sweet for me and had to scrape it off to finish it. It was just bad IMO.

Their prices are reasonable but the portions are small. They skimp on the rice and equates to about a bit over a 1/2 cup cooked. Beans are like 4 tbs dallops at most.

i was very disappointed that they don't serve chips before the meal. it's not expensive and it's a standard at every mexican restaurant i've ever been to. i couldn't really enjoy it when i found out we're not getting any snack.
as for the food, it was pretty good, except for the fact that the portions are small but cost the same as the big ones somewhere else.
i don't think i'm going there again.
and i wouldn't recommend it.

This was an excellent discovery thanks to Citysearch.
Latin people will appreciate the true Mexican gourmet cooking as well as the friendly service and excellent live music.
Fridays and Saturdays are filled with Live music with former frontman from the Venezuelan group Tempano. A MUST hear.
Would benefit from being in a place for itself.
Portions are not hughe, which is great for tasting different things and enjoying a good meal without regret.

I've wanted to visit Zapatas earlier this year, and just got around to it this summer. I wish I hadn't waited so long!! The food is incredible, hands down some of the best autherntic Mexican food I have eaten in the U.S. The owner is fantastically attentive and very helpful with menu questions. The margaritas are much better than most restaurants, and the menu in full of authentic and perfectly prepared entrees. I wish the location was not in a strip mall, for a patio or an outdoor eating area would really change the ambiance of the entire restaurant. My husband and I went for my birthday, and we were chased out into the parking lot while we were leaving by the owner to bring us back in for a desert he was preparing for us! I suggest taking the time to travel to Norcross for a great dining experience!

Pros: Great Menu Selection, Inexpensive, Fantastic Service

Cons: Strip Mall Location, No Patio, No Drink Menu

Imagine an off the beaten path Mexican cantina in a Mexican city that only locals go to because the food is more like what the senioritas cook at home and inexpensive; not like what the gringo touristas eat on main street. Totally different mexican food experience. Nice decor. Excellent service (owner introduces himself to all diners). Excellent marguritas. Nicely varied but not overwhelming menue. Go there! O'le.

This is not Chili's or Rio Bravo! Excellent food, very different menu. Love the chicken mole and try the melted cheese dip for an appetizer. Prices are great and this deserves to be the new hot Mexian place. Restaurants in North Atlanta are fast surpassing Buckhead and Midtown. Wait, they already have!

my sister introduced me to zapata last month, she told me to try "green cream" is called sopa de chile POBLANO, to be honest is the best ever. this is a poblano based a little bit spicy "spicy good" melted cheese in the hot cream and is served with crutons.
We also had a shot of tequila, the presentation is very nice . The waitres really cared to let us know about the difference of a good tequila. I'll go again, is excelent!
over all i had time to enjoy a good conversation with out being disturb.

Authentic and exciting mexican cuisine, great flavours and service without the boring chips and bottled salsa. Don't miss it you live in or are visiting the Norcross area!
