Is this a DR?
by Susan J.
The rude RECEPTIONIST aside, what's really important to the patient is the Dr, and, in my opinion, this person is a poor excuse for a Dr! First of all, the first duty of a psychiatrist is being able to COMMUNICATE with the patient, and with THIS 'Dr', that is difficult if your primary language is ENGLISH! Odd that a Dr who has not mastered the English language, would choose a field of 'MEDICINE' absolutely REQUIRING fluency in ENGLISH! In other words, all a shrink does is TALK, so it stands to reason he needs to be able to convey his 'advice' to his patients without excessive, "SAY THAT AGAIN, Dr", etc. Also strange is that this Dr has been 'practicing' (talking!) in this country for MANY MANY years, so it looks like BY NOW, he could have learned a LITTLE ENGLISH from his 'patients! (I thought a Dr was supposed to help the patients, not the other way round!) Anyway, this is not the only thing I have to say about this Dr...As a former patient, I found him generally rude, inattentive, and careless with his so-called 'advice'. Also, he makes you feel like he's in a rush to get you out the door so he can get the next 'PATIENT' in. (The pupils of his eyes are formed into the shape of a DOLLAR SIGN!) On my last visit with this Dr, he spent nearly my entire session talking to someone on his telephone, the conversation having nothing whatever to do with ME, or my case! When he got finished with the telephone, he threw a prescription across his desk, and mumbled something nearly unintelligible at me, then got up, and walked out of the room leaving me still sitting there. After waiting there for few minutes, I realized he wasn't coming back, so I got up and walked out of the room. Summing up, if all you want from a psychiatrist is proof that you're seeing one, (court-ordered therapy, etc) this one might do, but if you want REAL HELP, go somewhere else!

Patel Arvind Md

Unlike many of the reviewers here, I didn't have much trouble with the lady in the front office. She was brusque, for sure, and I would have preferred someone more friendly and polite, but she performed her job.
I had trouble with Dr. Patel. It was my first time going to see a psychiatrist. At first he barely listened to me, talking to me while reading the paperwork I'd filled out, responding to what I'd written rather than what I was saying. When I mentioned my parents, their medications, and the doctors they were seeing, he went off on a rant, saying how wrong their decisions were. He spent most of the session on that! Last I checked, it was ME coming in to find out about MY problems, not hearing about what my family was doing wrong! Their decisions aren't my decisions. I'm not a minor. I'm 32 years old.
He also said I shouldn't drink because it would make me gain weight. He's not concerned about the history of alcoholism in my family, it's just because it'll make me fat, huh.
He was just generally offensive, rude, and unresponsive to my actual problems. I don't even trust the script he wrote for me. I'm going to get a second opinion and I won't be returning to his office.
All this from from a man who proclaimed himself "The best psychiatrist in the South East"! If he really wants to be the best, he'd better learn how to communicate with his patients. I think they teach "bedside manner" even to those who work in internal medicine. By the way, I don't know if he tells ALL his patients this story, but he told me that originally he hated psychiatry, and he only got into it because it was too hard to get work in internal medicine. I think it shows!

Horrible office woman
by ellen h.
You could not be more correct. That office lady could not, absolutely could not, get any worse. I have confronted Dr. Patel about her, he just shrugged it off. I have been seeing him 17 years. Yes, she does hate anyone in that office; perhaps she hates her job. Time for her to get another one.

Still there

The rude office woman is still there. I needed to get ahold of Dr. Patel due to an emergency contflicting with the appointment. I gave notice because of the emergency but, the mean office woman had left a message on my answering maching that I would be charged for the appointment and missed it. I had given more than 24 hours notice due to an ambulance being at a relatives house. I finally got it straightened out but I had to bypass mean office woman by calling until someone else answered. She remembered that I had called so mean office woman did not have her way with me. I am going to talk to Dr. Patel about her again. When I do go to my appointments I hear his patients Black and White complaining about her. Like the Black lady said here, she is unpleasent. Race has nothing to do with this. I have a Black gynocologist, an Indian psychiatrist, an Asian pain doctor so...duh...I hope that 'mean office woman leaves' she must really hate people. I never did anything to her. Why has she done this to me? I could not get an appointment with Dr. Patel for months. She always answers that phone. I couldn't fax him as it would end up at 'mean woman's feet.; I could not send him a letter...signature required as she has authority to sign for Patel. God help you if you have any dealing with 'mean office woman'. She acts as if she has a 'beef' with anyone; anyone who is human.

I have been seeing Dr. Patel for a long time. I do agree about the lady at the window. This woman had it out for me...for nothing. She will cost Dr. Patel business...no dobt. They are not all like that. They used to be nice and helpful; no more. Some other patients heard her offensive way with me and said they couldn't stand her either. Other patients said they complained but yet, she is still there.

I love Dr. Patel and He has helped me so much. I dont even mind the waitm hes worth it. But the black girl that works the front needs to go. she is always rude, and I am not just saying that because she is black because I am too! the other girl seems very nice and has been very professional every time I have spoken with her. But if they dont get rid of her, their losing me, and from what i understand alot of others

My daughter and I have both seen the doctor and on every visit (at least 4) we waited a ridiculous amount of time. The doctor is good but his staff has lost him two patients from my household. They are very short and inconsiderate and considering that they work in a psychiatrist office I expected a lot more.
PROS: Doctor is good- really sweet man
CONS: staff is awful
