I was Dr. Odegaard's patient for many years, during which I suffered a back injury and needed pain medications. Dr. O was extremely careful about rxing for me, tested me appropriately, and kept close track of me until he got to know me better and knew that I really was not likely to "overdo" on the meds. I saw him once a month, and sure enuf, every month I had to wait at least an hour to see him. The guy was the worst at scheduling! However, that is not a crime, and I, like any other patient, had the option to change to another physician. However, I would rather wait to see Doc O than go elsewhere -- He's simply the best doctor I ever had! Attentive, takes all the time you need to tell him what the problem is, and also maintains a level of personal communication so he understands your life situation as well. The charges below, particularly from the surgeon, "Charles L.", are quite spurious -- as a user of very "heavy' narcotic pain meds myself, I can tell anyone that Dr. O was always crystal clear on the danger of addiction and that you DO NOT GO OVER THE PRESCRIBED AMOUNT -- I have actually been able -- with Dr. O's help-- to actually reduce the amount of pain meds I needed. Charles L. obviously liked getting high off of his meds, and like addicts everywhere, he likes to blame someone else for his problems. Dr. Odegaard probably trusted him more than most, as he was a dr. himself and assumed he had an iota of good sense about pain meds. Blaming Dr. O for his addiction is a cowardly, bs thing to do, but then addicts usually are cowards and bs'rs. Dr. Odegaard was a terrific doctor for me; he took great care of me, other than pain management for which I saw him every month, he also paid attention to my general health and well- being in as holistic a manner of any doctor I've ever known. I still need pain meds, but see another doctor now. When Dr. O was first arrested, they sent all of his patients to Queens; the doctor there prescribed me 800 mg. pills of tylenol - 5 per day. That dosage, by the way, had I been dumb enough to take it, would have damaged my liver in no time. That is sad!! These docs are so outraged that doctor O would give us the narcotic meds that we need (which are also perfectly legal for this usage); but they'd give us junk meds that cause side effects and don't work as well. Why?? The war on drugs?? This is ridiculous! So thanks, Attorney General, for keeping us all safe from drug dealers (and good doctors). Thanks for sending shills and fakes to trick Dr. O, so you could build your nasty little case against him. (I met her once in the waiting room -- we all knew what she was there for- she kept trying to get us to say bad things about the doctor. It was pathetic). The attorney from the AG's office who pushed this case had "issues" with Dr. O from long ago -- Dr. O spoke to me about the guy back in 2002 --joking about how he beat him in the Honolulu Marathon, how the guy was just dying to find a way to bust him (personal hatred mixed with the convenient belief that chronic pain sufferers are all 'faking it'). I never thought I'd see the day this kind of vicious prosecution could happen. This was a personal vendetta against Dr. O from a guy who's "a lot shorter" than the good doc. Nuff said? AG, I can't wait to next election time!I'm still trying to find a doctor that will talk to me!

I have been a patient of Dr. O's for almost a decade n it SHOCKED me that he was indicted fr any crimes. I told him in confidence two weeks b4 the indictments was handed to "be careful" of ppl. whm are coming in to fill their drug habits n using his kindness/empathy fr the pain afflicted to their illegal benefit. As fr the pain meds he so freely prescribes, yes, he did fr me too because he BELIEVED in what I told him was ailing me which was "pain". btw I have cancer...so this is not because I wanted to "get high". Therefore he believes in ppl in general. So it's YOUR responsibility to deal w/ur own drug use n not blame the good doctor fr believing in ur pain. Now I have less than one year to live n I can not get an aspirin to save my life!..I PRAY he gets back everything n in TEN folds, he is truly a remarkable man n more importantly a GREAT n compassionate doctor...at the end of the day we r ALL responsible for one self n that's what's wrong w/society today, no personal responsibility. We r so impromptu to "blame" the next guy....I

Regularly gives out rx for over 500 narcotic pills at a time, under the guise of "pain management." The fed should also be chasing the pharmacists who fill these scripts.

Hawaii a dog eat dog place to live! Imagine, how many other physicians, and big businesses in Hawaii, wants one less competitor. I rate Doctor Barry N. Odegaard, M.D. to one of the World's Best Doctor. He has saved more lives in Hawaii as a team player with other doctors than most doctors hiding in Ivory Towers and secretly killing the elderly, organized medical crime. Hawaii WELCOMES one of the World's Best Doctor, Mr. Odegaard, M.D. to our paradise. Much Mahalos, for a Great Doctor.

I am a physician. I cannot believe there are people on this website who actually said something positive about this man. He is a criminal and is negligent. I went to him at the recommendation of one of my patients. She said he was very good and I just needed a regular doctor. He proceeded to get me addicted to Oxycodone and any other drug I wanted. I dont have the time or energy to explain how dangerous he is but as a board certified surgeon I can tell you he should NOT be practicing medicine. He needs treatment himself and should really consider looking at his own problems which are extensive. Please, do not go to him unless you are looking for more drugs and if you are please know that MANY of his patients have died of overdoses. I know the number is over 10 and I know 2 of them personally.
I went from a very successful surgeon in Honolulu to 3 inpatient drug treatment programs because of this. Thankfully my patients understood I was not trying to get addicted and really it happened because I was given unlimited access to ANY pills I wanted. For example when I would tell him I was going on a trip he once gave me 600 Oxycontin!! Can you believe that. That is extremely dangerous.
He really needs help, to those of you who think he is a good doctor, please, I beg you to find another doctor. Do the doctor a favor and tell him to go and get treated for his own demons.

Dr. Odegaard has been my personal physician for several years. He has been more than a physician, he has been a friend. He always takes time to listen to me and has my health first in his mind. Certainly, there is extra time spent in the waiting area, what physician has ever seen a patient at the stated appointment time. This is just part of the health care system of scheduling.

Dr. Odegaard takes the well being of his patients above all else and that is what a physician should do

Under his own admission, Dr. Odegaard knows the wait in his office is a problem. If you are looking for a drive-thru doctor, you won't find it there. Dr. Odegaard takes personal interest in his patients and his care and concerns is his only downfall. Dr. Odegaard takes the time to care for the ENTIRE PERSON, not just whatever ails you. He is one of the last great doctors that will do this. All too often there are doctors who just want you in and out without getting to know you so they can give you the best care possible. He is the doctor you will want when you encounter something serious and possibly life-threatening.

As for the "federal charges"...To infer a desire for a conviction is irresponsible if one doesn't know the circumstances. A person who will pass judgement on hearsay or without knowing all the facts speaks volumes of that person's responsibility and maturity.

The types of verbal attacks made against Dr. Odegaard would be the same if after reading someone's post, I came back and said that person was a b*tch who had no respect for anyone else and all they really cared about was obtaining a prescription.

As for a doctor choosing to call in a prescription rather than writing one is to cover the doctor's liability from people who will try to alter prescriptions. I do know for Dr. Odegaard, the has it called in so there will be no misunderstanding. Taking the extra time to call in a prescription is safer and better for the patient as well.

Try and find a doctor that really does care about you.

Oh, and as for Dr. Odegaard talking to his sister on the phone...He was dealing with the death of a family member and a near death mother. Next time, think to find the reason before leveling an accusation.

As a aew transplant to HI I went to Dr. Odegaard for a consult... shocking! Waited 1 1/2 hrs past appointment (9 am) but there was no-one else in the waiting room the whole time (thought this was strange). FINALLY saw the Dr. who claimed he was late because he had been speaking to his SISTER on the phone. Proceeded to have the STRANGEST experience of my life highlights included the Dr. (50 something) actually trying to take off his shirt to show me (20-something female) a stomach scar, rollling up his pant leg to show his "knee scar", refusing to write a prescription and only saying "well I can phone it in" and leaving the consulting room with me (the patient) in it to talk to a drug rep from some random pharmaceutical company ... I was there for a general check up and contraceptive Rx so this all seemed rather strange??? Actually it got so ridiculous that I walked out. Later found out he is under ****federal indictment**** for narcotics charges - hardly surprising, this guy has trouble stringing 4 words together let alone a sentence :( The only positive thing about this whole experience was his highly competent, professional and friendly practise nurse - hope she gets a new job soon.

Just DO NOT BOTHER this guy is a space cadet and, in addition; likely to be proved a criminal in federal court soon.

BUT according to HI law he can still PRACTICE ... AARGH

PROS: NONE
CONS: FEDERAL INDICTMENT: DRUG TRAFFICKING + general wierdness

Only see this Dr. if you have three to four hours to wait to be seen. I have been to his office may times and the shortest wait I had was two and a half hours!

Dr. Odegaard is a great friendly doctor. Someone to talk to, who shares his own life as you share yours, and tries his best to take care of any problems or illnesses that you may have. It is a little hectic on busy days, but he will give you what you need.
