We have stayed in several hostels throughout many islands of Hawaii and this was by far the nicest. The place is very grand and antique, the rooms are roomy and very clean. And, they have free internet access on computers in the common room. The staff are very friendly and have great recommendations for tourists. Prime location.
This hostel was even better than some of the hotels we stayed in and we even decided to come back and stay one more night before catching an early flight the next day.

I visited my friend who stayed at this hostel in downtown Hilo. The dorm-style room that he stayed in was okay. It wasn't as hot and humid as I thought it would be. Anyway, we didn't stay in the room that long. One of the advantages of staying here is the price which is really a bargain. Also, it is conveniently located in downtown Hilo within walking distance to coffee shops, restaurants, a post office, banks, shops, bike and kayak rental shops, a farmers market, movie theaters, museums, and the Hilo Bay Front. I wouldn't stay here myself but I guess my friend didn't mind it.
Its old grandeur remains: The original, grand wooden staircase opens to an airy common area with wood wainscoting and 13-foot ceilings. The buildingthe oldest surviving wooden structure on the islandhas plenty of modern charm, too: Bath and shower rooms are new, as is a kitchen/break room. There is high-speed Internet access and cable television, an outside patio garden area, free coffee and tea, a billiard table, storage lockers, free local phone calls and more.
