I rented a house from Daylum. Cindy Starr managed it. When we moved in we were in the dark for the first night because there were no working light bulbs. Ladders were needed to put many of the bulbs in. When I called Daylum the next day they said it was our problem. We had to go out and buy a ladder to put in lightbulbs ourselves.

When we moved out I took the energy efficient bulbs with me. Except for one that a helpful electrician had put in for me in the backyard using an extra long ladder. He had told me that any bulb was OK so I have him an energy efficient one. Well, when we moved out over $200 was deducted from our deposit to put in lightbulbs. We were charged $50 for the one outside.

Quite a while after moving out when the house was again empty we stopped to check on the cat who belonged to the house and noticed that that outdoor light we had been charged $50 for had never been changed.
There are many rental agencies in Hilo, find an ethical one.

Day-Lum has handled my Hilo rental properties since 1989. In all this time I have NEVER had a bad tenant. Is this a miracle or just REALLY good management? As an Owner I appreciate Day-Lum's thorough screening of applicants, the on-time payment of rents, the detailed monthly statements, the handling of tradesmen, and the checking in on my tenants to make sure they aren't smoking or sneaking in pets. My Rental Managers protect my investments better than any other rental agency I retain, period!

Day-Lum has been able to optimize my rentals so that I average 30 days vacancy for every 5 years rented.... across every property! That is a phenomenal occupancy rate! Even in recessions, we have stayed full with great tenants who leave the premises spotless.

You may read sour grapes reviews from disgruntled former tenants and to that I say Hurray! I'm glad Day-Lum is doing their job for me and insisting tenants live up to their leases or get out. Day-Lum may be on the receiving end of strife that is more appropriately leveled at the property Owner. Delays in maintenance is a classic problem where Day-Lum has to wait for Owner approval of work orders. It may not be fast enough for tenants, but it is how you have to run a good business.

Trust Day-Lum to take care of your properties. Protect your investment as it appreciates, one bad tenant can turn your balance sheets upside-down.

In the last two years they have changed me from a vibrant happy person to an angry stressed out human being they terrorize you with the language of termination they are toxic poisening all the old ones and chopping down their fruit trees and poisening our gardens they are viscous people and seem to enjoy being land barons and cracking the whip until you die or give up....

Worse than a nightmare. These people are actually sadistic and hgoiborribly abuse seniors and others in Hud propeties. These people are poor and intinidated and many are handicapped. They have on site managers who are blattantly racist against Caucasians and are hostile and belligerent. They also proctice nepotism in placements. There are a multitude of complaints against them and why Hud continues to employ them as property managers is beyand conprehension. And of course it doesn't matter what efforts you go to when you leave. It's a given they're going to rob your deposit.

After waiting over a month for the house to be painted we moved in and found out that evening that most of the lights did not work. When we called Linda at Day-Lum she told us it was our problem. The ceilings were high and we had to buy a ladder the next day to install bulbs. We used expensive energy efficient ones. Later when an electrician came for another reason he used a tall ladder off his truck to replace an outdoor light that we had no way of reaching. He said it did not matter what type of bulb we used so I handed him an energy efficient one. When we moved I we took our energy efficient light bulbs with us and put the old ones back in. Linda deducted over $250 from our deposit to replace light bulbs. The most expensive one was the outdoor light. The replaced the energy efficient bulb with a $50 bulb. We paid top dollar for this rental. Promised repairs did not happen or were done only after multiple requests.

Do not rent from Day-Lum! They give workers keys to enter the apartment without notifying you. They are disorganized, unprofessional, and stupid. Simple cause and effect is lost on them. I have had two people enter my house without my prior knowledge. We are moving as we no longer feel safe.

I had the misfortune to rent from Day-Lum for three years. They are terrible with paperwork, lost our move-in review so we could not dispute anything when we moved out, and were quick to believe the worst of us for no reason, even with a good rental history. The property manager was often rude and ignored requests for repairs or made excuses. The front desk staff was always courteous and friendly, however. All told, I will never rent from them again or recommend it for anyone.

I have more than one dealings with this company over the years. I notice they really fall behind not only paper work very easily. Especially when the months of August September roll by. In fact it is not that bad when you make time to actually visit the office. Heaven help you and then some if and when you phone in. Requests are somehow misfiled, or even just plain pushed aside for whatever political reason.
As far as I am concerned, good riddence and have a good merry christmas.

We rent from Day-Lum and have rented from them for over a year now. We have never had a problem with them at all. The representative for our home is kind and friendly. However, when I call her to leave a maintenance order, the orders are very slow to be filled and some haven't even been filled yet (and I put them in months ago). If I talk to the front desk, though, the are almost always done in a timely manner.
