I was sad to go by J Salon on the bus this morning and find they were leaving! Last year I modeled for Shawnie so I paid a lot less for the service. Joe supervised and taught my stylist to LOOK at my hair and see what it does! You may think your hair just lays there but believe me, it doesn't! I've been a hairdresser myself for over 50 years so I think I know what I'm talking about. Every head of hair has growth patterns that should be taken into account before blades meet the hair! If your hair person does not do that and you feel you really know your hair-get up and leave! But Joe taught Shawnie every step of the way and I had the best cut of my life. I'm lazy and don't want to fiddle endlessly with my hair. I want to run a brush a through it and leave and that is exactly what I could do. I think what lead to the Salon's moving was probably the high rent and the fact that they were not competitive enough with their prices. No specials for days of the week or seniors or anything. I am a senior and I appreciate every senior special out there. Seniors still want to look as good as they can and should get a break in salons just like anywhere else.]
It takes a long time to learn and have confidence in your ability as a hairdresser so stylists should not be allowed to have empty spaces on their books. When they are not busy they should work on someone like me so they are busy constantly.
I do hope when Joe re-opens, if he does, he lets the world know where he is and that he has learned from this experience. Too many lhairdressers, and Joe may be one, today think they can make a quantum leap to the upper price levels for their services and no matter h ow you slice it, it takes time. You have to be willing to bend to what your market wants.

Once upon a time long ago, there was a big shot hair guy here, that will go unnamed, and he put brown salon professional henna on my porous surfer hair, only for it to turn green. And then said there was nothing he could do, to fix it, and moved on to his next client.
No, Sh+t Sherlock, it's a stain, it's henna. He should have known better. But we girls get a bit giddy around all the flash and big shot vibe, fancy salons, exclusive magazine, never ending coffee, cakes......all the diversions for the big ticket at the end to pay, "But the service,we say, they must be the best they're here and they brought me coffee can you believe it!!!"
If you don't know, the bottom base of hair dye that's hiding under top color that you see is usually blue green violet gold etc. and can make anything happen to damaged hair, usually the bottom unseen color of the dye goes straight to the bottom of the hair cuticle thats been broken open by bleach or sun. Goes down there and grabs on for dear life. Only way to fix it, is repeated bleach solutions done over and over and over again, so carefully so the hair/and scalp aren't completely done for and burned. It takes a very subtle technique. In my case, I was rescued by a colorist who knew what to do, and happen to be working that day and saw what went on.
An Angel. Once she got it out, it took all day just slowly lifting. Then only semi permanent, from then on or it would break off. Anyway it took years to undo that, and what I went thru at JSALON surpassed that. I came in for a very specific idea to get the red out of my hair. Had a consultation with the colorist, who just does color.
We decided to lighten it into a golden brown. But the owner, Joe, came over and went off about how he liked the red, he thought it looked good. We looked at each other, the colorist and I and suddenly we didn't know what was the right direction. There began a fiasco that started at 9AM and ended at 4PM. Hair dyed/toned/ toned lifted/lifted then toned toned and lets not forget hightlights, when that happen I have no idea it's all a blur at this point. PLEASE read my review on YELP for JSalon. There I tell the whole story, well almost the whole story, it would have taken way more that 5,000 letters to say it all. All I can say is, never let a flashy place and supposed famous hair techs with bio's that may be questionable at best, tell you what will make you look good, never do it. How many of these makeovers done on TV where they cut off, dyed, and change the person so much, when they come out, most of the time its, YIKES, they look awful. And they have to live with it. Make sure you know what you want, and if your not sure get clear first before you get caught up in the design of the salon/high end products and all the "acting" that goes with it, it's a SHOW, that's put on, for the price you'll be paying in the end, believe me.......Lenore

J Salon will cancel your appointment and not fit you in for another month! Unacceptible. The manager is clueless about customer service and client needs. The owner is clueless about the management of his salon. Too bad, because I was a loyal customer for 2 years and quite happy with my cut and color, despite the HIGH prices.

Due to the poor customer service at J Salon, I am now a new client at Heaven on Earth Salon & Day Spa in downtown Honolulu and very happy.

I have extremely thick long hair that isn't easy to manage. After living in LA for 8 years and crying after leaving many different salons...I have finally found my hairstylist soulmate!! Melissa has transformed my unruly locks into an edgy style that rules and is maintainable. I can't say enough about how happy I am I HIGHLY recommend going to her. I feel like it's a goodamn mirracle.

I've had a few truly awful salon experiences in my life, so I'm always wary of trying something new, but last week I needed a cut and blow dry and my usual go-to stylist/friend was out of town so...I ventured into J Salon, and I'm so glad I did! All the staff there was friendly and nice, but Monique who styled my hair was AMAZING! Just such a lovely person, and very talented - I left feeling fabulous, and I'm already looking forward to going back.

I Love Joe and Melvin! Melvin. is the best colorist in the world I have tried numerous stylists at several different salons but no body could do my highlights like Melvin. Joe is amazing with long layer sexy haircuts. I was recommend to them by my co-worker and I'm so happy with her recommendation. This is my 3rd time going there and my hair in looking better than ever.

So I'm from San Francisco, but if I had all the money in the world I would fly all the way to Hawaii every month to get my hair cut with Joe. He is awesome and the Picasso of hair. He listens to what you want and makes suggestions to make you want to go a step further. But he still keeps it in the comfort zone. The salon itself is cool and chic. The staff members are all friendly and the music they play is always on hit. The sweteened iced tea is to die for!

I must say that I received an EXCELLENT cut from the owner of this salon. It was the best cut I'd had in over 7 years. All of the stylists in this salon are extremely talented, friendly, and actually listen to what you want to have done. I am a firm believer that JSalon houses the most talented staff on the island. The owner cut my hair in a way I did not realize was possible. It was a liberating experience. As a fore warning, be prepared to spend big. You may also be pressured into trying their haircare products, which truly are amazing but very pricey.

If you want a great cut, you have to try this place! My stylist spent a good deal of time talking and helping me visualize what my hair will look like. She was very meticulous and obviously put alot of pride into her work. The atmosphere was relaxing although not "warm and cozy", more like clean and sparse. The staff was friendly, the assistants were great. I did not feel out of place, was totally comfortable. The downside is the parking (there is none), and it was a bit spendy. However, this was my fourth attempt at finding a salon and I would say that it was worth the money. Also, they have a fantastic website, check it out!
