Dr. Rodrigues is awesome, Dr. Brundage is excellent...Dr. Lei Hata should be working in another profession. Her primary concern seems to be $$$ and not 'compasionate' pet care. Her diagnosis of our animal was not even close, her attitute is terrible, and her general lack of concern should be addressed by this vet center. DO NOT ASK FOR HER, go with one of the other doctors!
More praise for Dr. Brundage. We took our dog in an emergency situation with a mystery illness that had been going on for 2 months and another vet was not being aggressive enough. We lucked out and got Dr. Brundage on our first visit and she had a clear game plan. When our dog didn't improve in 2 days, she strongly suspected something else, tested him, and she was correct. We know our dog's condition now and fortunately it's treatable. We're pretty sure he'd be dead if we hadn't switched vets and gone to her.
Yes, vets cost money and it's a unexpected burden when you start racking up bills. But none of the charges were unreasonable and vet care in East Hawaii is far less than it ever was when I lived in the Bay Area. I have more respect for vets than ever before. Some other complaints about this place aren't based in reality. Vets simply cannot afford to treat every sick dog that comes in for free and with all the irresponsible people here it clearly happens all the time. These are people who spent huge amounts of time and money to go to school when they could have gone to med school and made a lot more money. They instead chose to serve animals and the people that love them. If you can't afford to pay for care for your pet then you should not have one! To give a negative review for a business for not providing free services is juvenile and ignorant.

Thank you for writing such an awsome review. Dr. Brundage is effing awsome , I agree...but if we tell the world how epic she is , we will never get in to see her cause she will be booked solid!! hahaha. Its real nice to see people write nice things in a review for a change! choke karma points to you!
"Compassionate" is a good start for describing my dog's treatment at AVC. Followed by friendly (Aloha spirit), professional and very helpful staff.
Dr. Jennifer Brundage and her assistant were so-o-o gentile and caring with my dog. He never showed the least bit of concern with their exam/treatment.
When I went in with "Lucky" I expected a horrendus bill topped off by an X-ray. Not so. Dr. Brundage took the exam/diagnosis a step at a time using the most likely but least expensive route first. In the end, no X-ray was required. Two days later, Lucky is doing fine. Thank all of you at Aloha Vet Cent.
We took our weak sick cat there and paid for $500 worth of tests- xrays, blood test, even IV. No diagnosis. It took about 3 days before we could get results, while our cat was dying every day passing, waiting. finally a call, saying she has an infection, bring her to their hospital. They made us buy special food for her, even after they said she refused to eat when they put food by her mouth...? After $750 worth of bills (with 3 paid days of hospitalization), despite treatments of antibiotics (IV), they returned our cat sicker weaker with a disgusting strench of puss, puss which was not even fully drained, sicker. Within the next two days, our cat became a skeleton, oozing puss out everywhere (nearly a cup of puss), totally immobile, a dying skeleton, it makes me cry. In this economy, we tried so hard to pay the money to save her, putting our faith in the expertise and compassion of 'vets'. if she is so sick, it is the job of a vet to make that decision to lay out the options, so animals do not have to suffer unnecessarily. yes it is a business, but it is not morally right to make business at the expense of an innocent creature, and at a family that could barely afford it. I cry because it is not fair. If you see a cat dying despite pumping antibiotics into her, then there must be something WRONG. How could they return her to us like that and let us watch her die so painfully. It broke my heart knowing she spends every minute meowing in pain, it breaks my heart when my mom comes home to find her stuck in her litter box because she can't move, it breaks my heart that my dad has to wipe the ants crawling on her puss and all over her body because she can't even move to get them off. Despite calling the Vet, there is NO returned calls, nothing. they got our money, but its not about money, we don't know what to do watching our cat die. At least we want to put her to sleep at this point to stop the suffering. It is horrible to watch her hang on for life, to know the sadness and pain she must have inside knowing she is dying. I cry writing this. I feel it is so irresponsible and with all the money we paid with misguided direction, it is owed to our cat's life, to have a little compassion and some kind of justice in this world, and at their own expense do the right thing and help us put her to sleep at their rightful expense.

I used to work there and saw a person rush their
dog in, in an emergency situation, because the people
did not have money, Dr. Lei made them wait...and continued to do what she was doing while this dog
was suffering and almost died. What kind of doctor does that?
On the other hand Dr. R has done many charity cases
at no charge...because he truly loves animals.
We have been going to this clinic since it opened. The medical care is outstanding and the staff is terrific. In 1997 my husband and I went to Europe for 3 weeks. We boarded our 6 dogs, 3 weimaraners and 3 English setters, at Aloha Veterinary Center. When we returned we could tell they had been treated well. They were clean and happy. We live 40 miles away from Hilo town but this clinic is our primary veterinarian.
