This Hampton Inn is now a La Quinta. We checked in late one night. The desk clerk was wearing a cell phone earphone in one ear and was conducting a conversation while checking us in. I had to spell my name a bunch of times and she claimed she had a hearing impairment (yeah, that earpiece is blocking one ear!).

She couldn't find my reservation, which was made on the La Quinta Web site earlier in the day. She claimed she couldn't look it up by confirmation number. She finally gave up on spelling my name and asked me to write it down. I wrote it in really big letters. She said "There's no need to get mad, I'm trying to help." She wasn't doing a very good job of it.

Eventually she gave up on finding the reservation (turns out since we arrived after midnight the reservation was for the previous day; seems like the system would know that). She had rooms available and tried to rent us two rooms (I had only asked for one). She handed me the paperwork, which showed us checking in on the current day and checking out the next day, when in fact we were checking in and out on the same day. No problem.

Here's where it got bizarre: As she's finishing up she says, "This would've been easier if you wouldn't have come in here with an attitude." I said, "I came in with a reservation, not an attitude, and you couldn't find it." She said, "Well you have a terrible attitude." I replied that it was she, not I, who was escalating a problem I already thought was resolved. She said, "Look, I don't have to rent you a room. I have the right to refuse service to anyone." Needless to say I was dumbfounded. I chose not to reply. I didn't want to go looking for another room at midnight in a strange city. She continued, "You can call my manager and complain if you want. Or call the 800 number." I promised I would do just that.

So I'm up in my room filling out the complaint form on their Web site when I realize I don't know her name. So I called and said, "Hey I'm filling out the complaint form on the Web site and I realized I didn't catch your name when I was down there." She replied that her name was Rose and gave me also the names of her supervisors. I thanked her and continued my report.

A few minutes later there's a loud pounding at my door (by now it's 1AM). I look out and it's the cops. They said they want to get "my side of the story" regarding the "incident". I remarked that there was no "incident" but that I'd be happy to file a complaint against Rose for bad customer service.

After I told my story they said that Rose told them when I called I threatened her and told her I was going to do everything in my power to get her fired. Of course I had said no such thing. After a few minutes and my assurance to the police that I wasn't going to "escalate" this any further, they left and agreed to warn Rose not to escalate it either (she had been talking to her husband on the phone while checking me in, and I was concerned he'd show up at my ground-floor window.

Anyway, Rose is a psycho. I'm sure she won't be working there by the time you stay but if she is, don't do anything to upset her or she'll call the police. I wonder if that's standard training for La Quinta employees -- argue with the customers, then call people with guns to come intimidate them.

Hampton Inn has a lot of different types of rooms to choose from. The beds have all been replaced and I got the best sleep possibly ever, it was so comfortable. They also offer room blocks at very discounted prices. The front desk was knowledgeable and quick to have our room assignments. They also provided a shuttle to the airport and had a large complimentary breakfast in the morning.

PROS: Shuttle to airport and breakfast
