.

There are other TKD schools with fancier facilities, but Master Hughes runs an amazingly effective school on the second floor of the Rapid Reproduction business on Second Avenue SE.

Greg Hughes is an 8th Dan Black Belt and inductee into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He is an 8-time national forms champion and 4-time Iowa Games winner. More national champions have come from Hughes Institute of TKD than any other school.

While Master Hughes is certainly gifted in the area of TKD his real strength is in working with children. He has a natural ability to get the most from the kids. I've seen him press kids to perform at a time when most others would have stopped for fear of what failure might do to them. But he knows that they won't fail, and that the successful completion of a task, such as a particularly tough board break, in front of the entire class will be a real boost to their morale. It's an amazing thing to watch.

Parents are encouraged to attend and many choose to enroll themselves with their children. Classes are available for all ages from about 4 through adult.

One of the strengths of the school is leadership training. As the students move up in rank they have many opportunities to work with those in lower ranks. As they receive their black belts they will have the chance to lead the class. This constant mentoring process both enhances the student's understanding of the techniques he or she is teaching, but also creates bonds between the students that last throughout their experience at Hughes Institute.

New students can join at any time. Fees are reasonable and a variety of payment options, including automatic electronic payments, are available.

PROS: Great with kids; top-notch instruction
CONS: Tacky facilities
