After moving to West Des Moines years ago, my husband and I needed to find a gym around us that, we felt, was good enough for our family (us plus three children, including an infant), we finally found it!

Most importantly, to us, was childcare. We wanted a gym that would allow us to have our children supervised while we wanted to work out. We found that almost all workout clubs in area do this. We visited and tried a few surrounding gyms, but nothing compared to Prairie Life's. The childcare staff is nice, knowledgeable, and very, very hands on. Our children love the employees, the atmosphere, and what the club has to offer. Jillian, head of the childcare world at Prairie Life, is so nice and seemingly great at her job. Whoever is in charge of hiring the childcare staff (Jillian?) does a fantastic job!! We usually go in the mornings, sometimes the evenings. The morning staff is fantastic. (it's always very, very busy in the mornings, but they handle it VERY well). My kids' favorite employees tend to be Hannah and Christian. Whenever I walk in to pick my kids up, these employees are always interacting with children, cleaning, or helping a mommy-missing toddler. It is a staff like this that makes it very easy to trust my kids' safety and fun at Prairie Life. Although the childcare staff is young (17-26ish year olds) we have NEVER had an issue, in fact it has been such a great experience. I have never felt worried about leaving my infant with this staff. There has never been an instance when I walked in and any of my kids weren't having fun. I love the childcare at Prairie Life and highly recommend it if this is important to you.

The staff throughout the club is extraordinary. Very nice, very understanding, definitely there for customers. The trainers are so knowledgeable, but don't act like they know everything. They are there to help. I imagine many people want to work here, and the club must be extremely selective, as all of their employees are top-notch.

I love the managers. This club is in good hands.

The equipment is amazing. The club is always very clean. The locker rooms are great, large, and clean. You get more than enough bang for your buck.

In short, if the safety and enjoyment of your children is even remotely important to you, GO HERE. If you want a great workout experience in any way, GO HERE.

Only con we can think of: weekday mornings, the gym is PACKED FULL with stay-at-home moms.

I was a member a Prairie Life for 4 years (just recently discontinued my membership...but only because I lived farther away and was never going). In looking at other gyms closer to my house, they don't compare. I love the windows in the upper level of the gym - cheery, not dingy and dark. The place is clean and professional. If I lived closer, I'd certainly be at Prairie Life.

I just moved to the Des Moines area and decided to check out Prairie Life Fitness. A kind gentleman by the name of Robert signed me up and everything was a yes sir, we can make that happen, absolutely, almost too nice of an experience. I am not from the Midwest so I didn't think too much of it. When I signed up there was a box checked for a year and or month to month. At that time I explained to Robert that transfers are common in my line of work and he insured me that I should go with the lesser monthly cost and if something came up he would switch me to month to month and I could pay the difference. Well, low and behold I am getting transferred and Robert did me no such favors. Fact of the matter is; I don't believe he even faintly remembers me or the bullhsit he fed me one month ago. Because of that, I am allowed to put my membership on hold for the remaining 9 months of the contract at a 50% discount. I truly appreciate the gesture of kindness, but I would have expected that a circumstance such as this could of and should have been handled differently. Users beware of falsification of kindness and a sharp sting of pain as they twist the dagger thrust into your spleen. I would recommend finding a cleaner pool and a gym with better customer service.

Pros: Swimming Pool

Cons: Pool is nasty and I got two ear infections from it

Prairie Life Health & Fitness is a brand new large gym in West Des Moines. It offers an indoor track, lots of weight machines, two pools (indoor and outdoor), fitness classes, and a cafe and sports store. There's never a line or time limit for the cardio machines. The locker rooms have saunas and hot tubs and they provide hair styling products and hair dryers. Everything is always very clean. It's priced on the higher end for Des Moines, but really worth it for the excellent facilities. This is hte best gym in Des Moines!
