I was stunned by the rudeness of Sue today as I was checking out. I'm assuming she is the owner? No employee could treat a customer like that and remain employed. It's a fun place to shop for odds and ends but I will not go back, it's not that fun! I asked her if I could open a small box which she said contained walnut picks, (so I could see them), she very rudely told me to wait, then she did open it for me, & really snarled at me & said..see I told you it contained walnut picks...
I was startled to be treated like that, & probably said something rude back myself, then she grabbed the two boxes of treasures I was in the process of buying, & said I'd have to come back another day to buy them. Ya right, that won't happen, but whatever, peace, Sue. Take care of yourself and try to be nicer to your customers.

As a repeat customer and resident of Iowa City, I expect some semblance of respect from local stores I continually go out of my way to support. Heading home with my dog in tote, I decided to stop briefly for something I've been needed for

I have regularly shopped at Houseworks for a decade and I keep going back because their selection is great and their prices are usually fair. I have found some of the most interesting books and household items at Houseworks -- their consignors are undoubtedly a highly-educated, well-traveled group, judging from what they cast off.

However, the caveat is the legendarily rude service. I personally have seen (and occasionally experienced) examples of every kind of rudeness described by other reviewers. The owner exhibits a kind of bi-polar personality: often pleasant, until some affront causes her to change mercurially.

Then she becomes passive-aggressively rude: repeating the same thing over and over again in a voice one might use with exceptionally slow-witted children; exhibiting aggressive unwillingness to help customers find anything in the store; responding to inevitable haggling attempts not by saying "sorry, we can't do that" and looking sorry, but broadly implying that the asker is a dishonest chiseler trying to cheat the consignor (regardless of whether the item is near the end of its consigning period and the consignor might actually want some money rather than having their item thrown in the dumpster and receiving nothing); etc.

The owner clearly believes rules are more important than people. Consequently, when a customer asks to bend a rule, even a very trivial one not posted or obvious, her nuclear response makes perfect sense (to her). She does not ever, even slightly, consider going "the extra mile" (or even the extra inch) to help customers -- she only barely tolerates them -- and she seems not to understand that "it's not what you say, it's how you say it." I own a small retail business myself, and if my employees ever treated my customers like she does, I would give them one warning before firing them.

Good customer service is a calling. It's about occasionally going out of our way to help people when they have an extra need, thereby earning their goodwill and gratitude. Clearly the Houseworks employees and owner can continue their rudeness because their prices are so cheap, but it is sad to witness such an abomination of service, such an abuse of people.

The owner is likely way past being burned out and would do the community a (real) service by selling the business to someone more tolerant, someone willing to fulfill the calling of serving customers -- human beings -- with compassion and humanity. Even when they break the rules.

When you walk into a business and the owner makes you feel like everything you do is wrong it makes for a very unpleasant experience. First off, apparently my father and I parked in the wrong spot outside which was enough to get things rolling. The paint was faded at best so we took a guess as to where to park but instead of nicely asking us to move it was a screamed order from the owner. We took in 4 bags stuffed with goods and were denied almost all of it. Near the end of our short visit she again screamed at my father for talking on the phone inside the business as if that is a given rule everywhere you go. My mother was a long time customer and apparently put up with this extremely rude service but after I made three visits that ended up exactly the same way with terribly offensive and impolite service we put it end to it. Actually the owner put an end to it by throwing what money/leftover items we had in our account at the both of us as we left the business because my dad refused to stop talking on his phone at that moment.

I've been shopping and consigning at Houseworks for 10 years. Even when they were in temporary quarters at Eastdale, i made good money on the things i brought. I respect their criteria for items, and i love their no hassle policies.
In response to the person who says they are rude...i have not had that experience.

for those that think the folks at Houseworks is rude, my question is: have you ever worked in retail? especially between Thanksgiving and New Years? get over yourself. trying to barter? talking on the phone? just don't. i have always - always - had a positive experience there.

i have two accounts one for me and one for my wee business that cleans out houses and storage areas for children that are out of town. Sue is always fair and always nice to me. i've never had anything go missing. i've never had anything miss marked.

i love the place.

I love Houseworks. I have been traveling up to Iowa City for years and years, and I always stop there. If you need a garlic press, a lid for a crock pot, some neat fabric, a basket, you will find it there. Over the years, I have found some neat textiles and wooden bowls and platters I use in the SCA. I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. They have a system, and it works for me.

The store is a thrift dollar shop, has more used kitchen and useless utensils than antiques. the distribution by boxes and departments is very good. The check out is fast. The staff is rude. When I wanted to pay a single item on the card she just said "look we actually loose money on these small items, so..". Well I hope that attitude doesn t cost you your business, because you sure lost a first time customer already..

I have been a loyal customer for years. Yes, they are rude, but I put up with it because they have interesting things, and I assumed I was getting a fair price for what I brought in. I even over looked that half price items are pulled early. I now have evidence that there is systematic stealing and it really hurt me. I found my items that were not marked with my number. I thought it was a mistake and was treated rudly when I very politely pointed it out. I was told that the "fix" was easy because the "wrong" number was an inactive account. I makes me wonder how many other sales are skimmed to this "inactive" account. Please take your items somewhere else so I can enjoy shopping with the knowledge that all consigners are getting their money. I am happy to talk to you directly, Sue, if you would listen to me. I am really sad that you have lost my trust.

Rudest staff I have ever encountered. My wife and I trying to examine a product. As we were opening the box, a staff nudged my wife aside, grabbed the box and said "We ask the customers to open the boxes in the front of the store." The staff then took the box, we saw neither her or the box again. Very angry tone of voice, very very rude.

I'm a local resident who frequents Houseworks alot. I buy and sell. I don't like seeing the hateful reviews of Sue, as she deals with alot, as do alot of the employees there. They are direct, as they have to be, sometimes. However, they have always been very friendly to me, and very helpful to me. It's a great store and I must say that I've seen Sisters Garden employees in there buying things, and then seen them marked up in their store....so you should check it out, if you like that sort of thing and get it before they do- cheaper!

Consignors should know that the Houseworks staff might take their items, say they will sell them, but later change their minds and throw things in the trash. Also, merchandise that has been reduced to half-price is supposed to stay on the shelves for a full month. Houseworks promises this in writing when consignors open an account. However, they often pull the half-price merchandise two or three weeks early and toss in in the dumpster. They deceive their customers and have no respect for the merchandise entrusted to them to sell.

I've been shopping at Houseworks since the first week it opened, and taking things there to be sold as well. I've never felt anything but welcome. When one of our kids moved to the coast, we took an enormous amount of household stuff to Sue -- and worried that we might not be her favorite sight, coming through the door. But she and her staff were great. Houseworks has high standards for what they'll take, but I like that, as I shop there, too. In my book, Houseworks is #1.

I have shopped at Houseworks since the very beginning. It has grown and changed over time and I will say, Sue has gotten grouchy these last couple years- BUT I can't imagine the crap she puts up with non-stop. Maybe a vacation would be good. Her wall of rules cracks me up- because you KNOW there has to be a funny story behind each one. I go, put my phone on vibrate, and enjoy picking through things. Sometimes I find a lot, sometimes nothing. I wish sometimes you didn't have to wait for something that just got carried in to be priced- because I would have bought several things on the spot. Heck, shoot me a price, maybe even a little higher- and see if I'll bite. In the end, I'm searching for a deal, at a good price, and I try to keep expectations low as far as perks. As far as service, it's no Von Maur.....and you aren't paying those prices either.

I avoided Houseworks based on some previous bad reviews I had read (specifically on this site) for quite a while until I finally decided to try it out 1st hand. WOW am I glad I did! As a person who frequents about a dozen thrift stores in the area for the best product and price, Houseworks is by FAR the best place, hands down. The place is clean, organized, everything is labeled, there are regular sales and the inventory changes constantly.

I would also SERIOUSLY question all the 1-star ratings left ALL on December 2, 2010. I'm curious who out there took the time to register *that* many times just to damage a store's reputation. They need to find a hobby other than grinding axes.

The main complaint I had read was about the owner being rude. I've been frequenting Houseworks for several months now and without exception the owner (Sue) has been nothing but pleasant and accommodating. Mad the owner told you to get off your phone? Well the rest of the store is annoyed we have to listen to your phone conversation while your kids run around the store like they own the place. I don't care WHAT phone call you're waiting for, the rule in the store is NO CELL PHONE CONVERSATIONS, period. That's one of the AWESOME rules that makes it pleasant to shop there! If you have enough time to be browsing a thrift store then you have enough time to walk OUTdoors and take the call in the parking lot like the rest of the respectful customers do.

I'm shocked people have actually given this store bad reviews because they felt burned for being called on breaking very simple, socially- courteous rules posted numerous places around the store. Grow up. What reaction did you except from the owner/staff when you blatantly walk around the store on your phone as if you're too good for a very simple store request? I've heard Sue ask people to get off their phone a few times, and every time the ONLY reason she raised her voice was because the talker was so involved in THEMSELVES and their phone call they weren't hearing her ask them to take the call outside.

If the previous negative reviewers want to avoid the store because they can't handle going by easy-to-follow rules that benefit everyone, I say let them continue not to be there, no body wants them there to begin with. Just because you're a customer doesn't mean you get to be an over-entitled donkey's rear.

I have been shopping and consigning at Houseworks for more than five years and the owner has been nothing but pleasant and cheerful to me. Her rules are not hard to follow and it is completely up to her to refuse to serve people who aren't following them. I don't know why so many people are unsatisfied, but this has never been my experience at Houseworks.

Anyway, Houseworks is by far the best consignment shop in Iowa City; I never buy any new kitchenware or furniture because I always know that what I need will be waiting for me at Houseworks if I visit. Prices are usually fair. They want to get the most for their consignors, but they also want to sell stuff quickly, so if something seems high, it pays to wait a few weeks and the price will usually go down. Great store; never know what you'll find.

I love thrift stores and have gone to Houseworks for years. I have come to just expect RUDE treatment whenever I go there-and not to let it ruin my experience. But when the owner was mean to my elderly father-I finally had enough. How can you be that irritable and mean at every opportunity? And to someone's elderly father! She is even awful on the phone.

It is the third time that the nasty owner of this shop charged my things without giving some of them back to me. I firmly believe that she is doing it on purpose.
The trick is very simple. She charges you in front of you and put your things on the back of her counter on the ground. Then after you pay,she gives your things back again onto the top of her counter and leaves some things already charged still on the back of the counter. This is the THIRD time she does this, and there is no reason for me to believe that this is a mistake because at least three things that I paid were not given to me, and these things are too big to be left by mistake.
I also remember what was left without giving me for the last two times. Hey, Do NOT think your customers are IDIOTS and you are SMART by doing this trick to them again and again! They just believe in your honesty which you do NOT really deserve~Do not shop in this store because the female owner STEALS~

I have been taking my things to Houseworks and shoping there for years. Not Any More! I am really stunned at the rudness I see from the employees and the owner (Sue). I have seen her louldy bark at people for using their phones, even when it was a inquirey on a purchase. The other day I saw the skinny, scruffy guy chase down a customer that was carring an item, walk up taking the box from their hands and say "he wasn't going to watch them open it"! A person has to wonder if these people are making a effort to offend as many people as possible! It is amazing that she, and the skinny guy, treat people this way and stay in business. I have seen enough. I am embarrassed for the people they treat this way, and will not condone public humilation to anyone by shopping there any longer.
Sue.... you and your employees need to re-evaluate yourselves!

Rude staffs and owner. Do not respect customers. Bad experience being treated badly there, no matter how often and how much money you spend on this store.

I'm new to Iowa City and stumbled upon Houseworks the other day. I was really excited, it looked fun. I was on my cell phone as I walked in, something I do rarely. I did not see any signs on the way in the door declaring the store a cell free zone. I actually hadn't said a word when I was popped on the shoulder from behind by a woman wielding a magazine. She curtly told me to take it outside. First of all, I am not offended by the request not to use a phone, but I am offended when someone feels free to swat me with a periodical to make their point. I left and will not be returning. Who needs that experience? There were some other great shops near the Crowded Closet on Gilbert Court and I'll be visiting those in the future.

We will never shop here again! The guy was the rudest person that I've ever come across in retail! The lady....well, let's just say she needs to be in another business, also! If you own this store and are reading this....time to find new employees!

There is no star rating for this place! Ugh!

And...I agree with the others! My friend was also attacked by the Cell Phone Nazi while we were in there! And, yes, the guy stunk so bad that we were so glad when we were told to never come back!!! Can you believe this! It was the worst shopping experience that I've ever had in IC...time for BBB or Chamber to run them out of town!!!

Called to ask if they had something, the rude male employee on the phone said they were swamped and I would have to come in to find out, I apologized..?, then he hung up on me.

Dear Houseworks...Maybe I will just have to skip the visit. When this is the first site that comes up when googled, you should try to be a bit more conscious of your employees attitudes. I mean it really seems like people want to give you money... try harder.

For the most part I haven't had problems shopping there. However, they seem to have been jacking up the price on music lately, especially LPs (some of which are in poor shape). Oh well, I just started shopping there much less. Maybe it's working out for them in the end?

My one real complaint is that the last time I was there shopping near closing time, they shut the lights off more than 10 minutes early. They clearly knew I was there flipping through records, and when I asked if they could just turn the light back on for a few minutes they said "no" in a less-than-pleasant tone of voice. Who does that? Why not just flick the lights and/or make an announcement. It really left a bad taste in my mouth, justifiably or not, and I'm not sure when I'll be going back.

I recently visited Houseworks with my husband and daughter and it was a horrible experience. They do have great items but that is thanks to the consigners not the staff. In fact a few items had come through the door as we were checking out and the man working had set them out as if they were for sale but when I walked over to look at one he yelled at me
" THOSE JUST CAME IN DON'T TOUCH THEM " WOW!!! Really guy...here's and idea how about you ask if I'm interested and price them so I can buy them...I'm sure the consigner wouldn't mind!! I know there are a few new stores in the Iowa City area and I just learned of one that will open in September in Kalona. I was told they will be just down from the post office in an old Christian book store and they will consign at 50/50. I'm excited to see what they and the other stores have to offer and I urge consigners to check out these options! And for all of us bargain shoppers, we need to take our business somewhere where it is appreciated!

I am so happy to hear that people are taking their consignments elsewhere. Sue can finally be happy alone in her well established successful business with no customers. There are two new thrift shops opening near Houseworks. One is on Kirkwood Ave across from Star Motors and the other is on 1st ave near Play it again Sports. I happy to say that I was a strong weekly customer of Houseworks for 10 year! I took consignments there all the time and purchased items regularly. When my friends come from out of town we now go to all the other consignment shops and I will never take anyone to Houseworks.

Sue has proven that one way to ruin a business is to make customers so uncomfortable that they just stop coming in the door. If I could rate zero stars I would

I just had the identical experience as the lady who wrote about cell phone nazi. I am a very easy to get along with person, and I had a call come in as I was shopping. This lady who owns this store yelled at me to get off the phone and told me how rude I was and that no one was interested in my conversation, etc, etc. She then told me she was going to charge me double because I was on my cell phone!! I did get off the phone right away, and said excuse me??? Then she proceeded to tell me it was on the front door that I couldn't talk on the cell phone. I guess I don't read everything that is on the front door of a business, because I've never been in a place that tells me I can't answer my phone.

I did tell her that I thought she was rude to yell at me while I was on a business call. Then she told me, she was not going to let me buy the items I had planned to purchase.

I am from an hour and a half away, and I have been to house works many times over the past several years and spent
my hard earned money.

My question is this. If I come to the store with a friend, can we speak to each other, or do we have to not say anything, because the people shopping in there are not interested in our lives or anything else? Isn't this kind of like talking on the phone??? I'm confused, is her store a no talking store???

Has she crossed a line somehow, by telling me that I had to pay double? or refused to sell me items??

Lawyers out there help me out on this one???

JG

P.S. I do like the store and it has lots of great items. But it is the consigner's who really make the store, so please consign elsewhere, because we out of towners and small boutique owner's love your stuff.

BUT THIS IDIOT IS OUT OF CONTROL!!!!

I will be reporting her to the Iowa City Chamber office and the Better Business Bureau!!!!

I am a lover of thrift stores and since I worked in retail for many years I'm pretty sure I'm an easy customer. However, I was browsing Houseworks one day and my son's school nurse called to tell me he wasn't feeling well and needed to be picked up early. Some woman who worked there flipped out, threw me out of the store and embarassed me horribly. She screamed at me that everyone in the store was having their shopping experience disrupted (most of all myself, I guess). What a HORRIBLE place to shop. If the cell phone Nazi doesn't get you the guy at the check out's body odor will. You can smell it through out the store and its only when it intensifies as you pay that you realize it is simply one person opposed to showers that smells SO bad. Seriously, don't bother, go to one of the other great thrift stores around. Same stuff, better experience.

I'm glad the owner's friends were nice enough to write positive reviews for her, but the truth is that on many occasions I've heard Sue be rude and abrasive to customers. At times I've gotten the impression that she views customers as an annoyance. Not a good attitude for a business owner. To be fair, though, the store has a good selection and it's worth checking out if you're not easily offended.

The old lady that runs the place has completely ruined houseworks for me. I have been going there for 11 years and I finally called it quits after the final time she was rude to me. I have put up with her BS for years.

rot housworks, rot.

The rudeness of this owner lady (sue) fully out weighs my chances of ever returning to this joint. Iowa City is lucky they have more than one consignment shop. I never experience over the top rudeness at the other shops.

Pros: cheap junk

Cons: rude owner

After numerous visits to this store, EVERY SINGLE time the woman who works there - I believe her name is Sue - has been rude and curt with me and anyone else I happen to have with me. As an adult who is there to browse and pay full sticker price, I do not need to be talked to like a child, which she consistently does. I feel I have given this place multiple chances and each time it has failed. There are plenty of other places to take my business to and I will be doing just that.

Very honest staff--they go through your stuff in front of you and let you know what they won't take. It sells fast! If you are shopping, you need to look carefully--merchandise is sorted into categories but the shelves can be very full. Great for books, cookbooks & craft supplies. If you see something you like--buy it. It won't be there tomorrow.

there are bound to be negative experiences at any store and, sadly, more reviews get written by the ones who didn't get what they wanted out of their visit. my friends and i have followed Sue around town over the years that she has owned Houseworks and everyone can have a bad day now and then. people have no idea of the stress that kind of business generates and the annoying people who shop there expecting to be treated like royalty or "negotiate" everything or throw around stuff they don't like and complain that there isn't an amazing find on every shelf. i can tell you that if you are the kind of person who truly likes this kind of store then you are the kind of person who is willing to dig through the "stuff" to find the treasures and i have found many treasures throughout the years from an unusual book, a great piece of retro tupperware, a horse statue for my collection or an amusing piece of 60's memorabilia. i'm glad that Sue has kept this store going for so long and i have made a tidy sum of money thanks to her selling boxes of items i have brought in. sorry you had a bad experience, but that is certainly not the norm. Thanks Sue for being there for the rest of us.

I will NOT be going back. Stop by this store if you want to be treated worse than you ever have been treated ever before. I don't usually write reviews but my trip to this store was a horrible experience. I think the owner herself must have written the satisfactory reviews, there can be no other explanation.

I really enjoyed reading the reviews because they ring so true to my own experience. The owner lady is a nightmare. And she has some personal vendeta against cell phones. If she sees you holding one near her store you'll probably be berated. But... because the challenge of finding the good deal in the sea of not so good deals is only increased by this obsticle... I still like going. You'd think she'd learn to stay away from customers for her own profits' sake. Oh... and I've been looking at items on the shelf and told by a passing employee to return them to where they belong in another section. Customer service just isn't their strong point.

I have been shopping at Houseworks for nearly a decade and it is such a great place to buy unique, gently-used household items. Why buy new when you can get a hand-me-down? Especially in a college-town where young people (and others) get tired of their "things" regularly. The owner is awesome, I have never heard her be rude to customers, and she is usually there when I am. Direct maybe, but not rude. The people who complained in other reviews were probably talking loudly on their cell phone and asked to step outside (I love that policy). There WAS a crabby saleswoman working there for a while, but haven't seen her around lately. Highly recommended

They have a great selection of household items, dishes, small appliances and books.

Great prices, wonderful treasures!

Just make sure you have plenty of room in your trunk, because if you're like me, you'll go home with boxfuls of great stuff!

I was visiting Iowa City last week and decided to stop by Houseworks: it's a FANTASTIC store! Everything's well-organized into sections, i.e. frames, lamps, kitchen, gardening--which those of you who are like me and frequent secondhand stores will appreciate. Unique selection and great prices (and I say this as a New England resident, where lots of stores really mark up their prices.) Highly recommended-

This is a fun consignment shop that has everything from furniture to dishes. Nice big store. Things are sort of disarry on the shelves, but there is lots of room to roam around. They offer multiple houseware items on consignment. Quality items. I have found a few antique treasures as well! Nice selection of vintage paperback books as well. Few fabrics and linens as well. Own parking lot and easy to get to.

An Iowa City treasure! Houseworks is the best for both seller and buyer. Cheap, clean, and plenty of clutter to dig through. The seller consigns items and receives 50% after the owner prices, displays, and sells the items. Each month as a different discount color for super savings.

PROS: Plenty of parking.
CONS: Store can get a little crowded.
