I went in for a routine oil change and after the oil change they came out and tried to scare me into playing $800 for new brakes by saying my brakes were so far gone that it was a miracle I was even able to drive there at all and that it was extremely unsafe for me to even leave the shop. They then told me that my car would be next in line to fix and that it would only take three hours and they were driving the courtesy car around to the front of the store as we spoke so it could take me home so I didn't have to wait there. This all happened in about a 3 minute time frame and they tried to overwhelm me with details so that I would be all flustered and panicked and sign off on something that didn't need fixed. If it wasn't for the fact that I had new brakes put on last year and there have been no problems with them, I might have believed them. Instead, I took the car to another place for a second opinion and they said my brakes still looked brand new and there were not any problems with them at all. I will never go back to the horrible people at Tuffy who tried to frighten me into spending an obscene amount of money before I even had time to process what they were saying. They are unethical, immoral, jerks.

I realize it's typical for car places to try to get a lot of money out of you, but this guy was straight up dishonest.

I went to Tuffy to get my A/C inspected. Of course, they found out that everything having to do with the A/C would need to be replaced... for a total of around $900. When I discovered that, I decided to wait on the repair. As I was ready to leave the shop though, the sales person stopped me to tell me they'd also found that 1) my transmission fluid was dirty 2) my fuel dampener needed to be replaced and 3) my cabin air filter was missing and I needed a new one. The sales guy said he'd never heard of a fuel dampener but suggested I spend the $100 on parts for it anyway, and that the cabin air filter would be about $40 plus labor. I told him I'd think about it.

A lot seemed to be wrong with my car all of the sudden! Because I'm a young woman, I decided to check online to see what I could find out about some of these problems. Not only did they want to heavily overcharge for me a/c parts, I also discovered something really strange: The $40 cabin air filter he'd wanted me to buy, DOESN'T EXIST FOR MY CAR MODEL.

So, needless to say, I will not return there for the a/c repair or any other work I need to have done.

My serpentine/timing belt broke and couldn't get it to the mechanic I normally go to in Waterloo. I think Tuffy's is par for the course in Iowa City - meaning expensive. Maybe it's because of all the money associated with the University, but I went to Seydell and it was about the same markup.

So they charged me 264 for parts. A search on autopartswarehouse.com showed 145. Then they charged me 152 for labor. They also threw on 25 for "Shop Supplies."

I think they did a pretty good job, but those prices seem pretty steep especially with the economy rolling down hill. But that's what you get if you're car dies right next to the shop and you don't want to pay to get it towed some place a bit more reasonable.

I took my truck here when we were not sure what was wrong with it. The staff had the problem found and fixed in less than an hour. Great job!!! I appreciate businesses like yours.
