Johnny's Hall of Fame has the best night life I've experienced in Des Moines. Around seven or eight at night they turn off the juke box and have a dj take over. He is really good at playing to the crowd. There are always a huge variety of people in Johnny's. There is no set dace floor being a sports bar, but a dance floor seems to spring up eventually. If you're a guy like me you'll love their female clientel.

I was taking my family to a Des Moines Energy game. They are a triple A basketball team. We went into Johnny's to get something to eat before the game and were very happy we did. I was with my wife and two children. Our server was very helpful. She was also very good with our children. Seeing as my 10 year old decided to cover the table in pepsi. I was super excited to see all of the flat screens on the wall. This gave me something to watch as we ate. Our food was excellent. Thankyou Johnny's Hall of Fame

Johnny's has flat screen tvs in high def everywhere you look. There is not a bad seat in the house. For every game I've been to there they have had some kind of special on drinks and food. Everything is reasonably priced. The service was excellent, and atmosphere even better. A great place to watch a game.

Perfect to watch a sporting event with big booths and lots of TVs. The menu is no frills, but full of sports bar favorites. Go at lunch time for the pizza buffet!

I know this place just opened a month ago but they have a long way to go. The beer and pop on tap is flat and yucky. There are a lot of nice TVs but when I was there half of them were showing "No Signal." The place itself looks unfinished. The wait staff are a disaster...they had no idea what they were doing although they were cheerful enough. All in all I would say that the location is fantastic, the no-smoking policy is wonderful and everything else needs A LOT of work.

Pros: location, no-smoking policy

I'm not sure they were quite done with the renovations when they re-opened. Lots of things need to change before i make another trip to Johnny's. wait staff and management were so confused, slow and clueless! food was just ok. the positive was the great new tv's, high ceilings, and windows with fresh sunlight. and now a non-smoking atmosphere! hope it gets better!

A group of coworkers and I decided to try out the 'new' Johnny's for lunch on Thursday, March 20th. We arrived around 11:30, didn't get to order until 12:00, and the food did not arrive until 12:30. I ordered the small Ceasar Salad; when it arrived (in a cup just slightly larger than a coffee cup), it had one cucumber slice, one tomato slice, six croutons, and about five bites of lettuce. The menu said it also came with garlic bread. When I asked the waitress where the bread was, she gruffly said, "Well, I would have brought you some if we had any." I also had to ask for dressing, as it came plain with nothing on the side.

After all was said and done, they agreed to comp us on our beverages ($2.00 for soda! At least they have free refills...) and the salad (which was about $5.00). My coworker was charged 50 cents extra for the cheese on his double cheeseburger, which he thought (correctly) should come automatically when you order a double cheeseburger.

There were several other things wrong with our experience. Just to scratch the surface: severely-limited menu (they were missing half of the things on the shortened menu anway), cramped seating, inexperienced staff, and no attention to detail.

The only good thing about the place is the abundance of televisions. If you're into sports, this will be a great place to check out games on their big-screen televisions.

If you are going to open an eating establishment, either be ready to go on the first day with a complete menu and a full staff, or wait until you know you can do it right.

Even when (and if) they get things 'right,' Johnny's is just a carbon-copy of every other bar/restaurant in Des Moines. Nothing about the place stands out, and the only reason Johnny's will survive is because it is an institution in downtown Des Moines. It will always be a 'second-choice bar' for downtown partying.
