I actually attended North High School a few years back and from my personal experience I think that it is a great school. They offer many extra-curricular activities for students which helps to get the students involved and makes school a more exciting place to be. They also have a great staff.
On the negative side they offer a program for students that aren't doing to well in school. This program rewards these students when they do well (i.e. when they get good grades, when they attend class, when they don't misbehave,etc.). Some of the rewards include snacks and money. This is a good program except it isn't fair to the students who always perform well. Why should a student who always acts up in class, when they actually go to class, and gets bad grades get a reward when they do well one day out of how many that they did badly when there are students who do well everyday that get nothing. Sure you can say they do get rewarded by getting good grades which is true but come on look at it from a kids point of view would you rather have a good grade or cash?! I think that the school should keep this program but also recognize those that do well on a regular basis more often.
Over all though I do feel that North is on the right track to success!

This high school has an excellent principal who is trying his best to make this inner city high school better academically. There are a number of excellent, dedicated teachers at this school, but they have a difficult student population to work with.
North High School has one of the very best ROTC programs in the United States. Also, it has the best drama department in the city of Des Moines.
