In 2010, we took our senior dog, Sierra, to Dr. Vandergaast at Creature Comforts, based on a referral.

Creature Comforts worked very hard to help Sierra, as he had kidney failure and hip dysplasia. Sierra was in their hospital for a week and constantly watched over and nurtured. It was reluctantly decided that Sierra was in too much pain and that his kidneys were not going to get better. So, with soulful reflection, we decided to end his suffering....peacefully.

Sierra was a very special part of our family. From 6wks old to 16,, he was our first child and we took his medical care very seriously. Dr. Vandargaast and her staff were exceptional. They treated us with respect and were extremely empathetic of Sierra's condition and was even more heartbroken that Sierra passed on.

Fast Forward to October 2013 and we have adopted a one-year old Huskita named Jackson, after 3yrs of mourning the loss of Sierra.

Once again, Dr. Vandargaast and her staff were delightful and treated Jackson with respect and treated my wife and I with patience and understanding of how difficult it has been, as well as the guilt we initially felt for introducing a new dog into our home.

I strongly recommend Creature Comforts.

P.S... Yes, they are remodeling and have been for quite sometime, however, if you are more concerned with the cosmetics of the facility over the quality of the medical care and treatment, then you do not deserve the luxury of animal companionship.

I took my puppy for grooming and asked for "trim." I specifically told them that he had had his face shaved before, and that I did not want any shaving. What they brought out to me was a completely shaved, hairless puppy that I could not even recognize. It is totally unacceptable, and when I complained the groomer stated that she wasn't there when the puppy was brought in (at his appointment time!). I had been impressed that they could get us in quickly, but now realize it is because they are incompetant and probably have few return customers.

If you care about your animal, you will not take them to this Vet. They have been remodeling for 5 years and just last year they started to do something about it as the city told them they had to. They are VERY expensive cost me over $1500.00 and they did not even give the correct diagnosis to my pet, as they wanted to put my dog down.Got a 2nd opinion and found out he has a thyroid issue and $45.00 and 3 months later my dog is active and healthy! Also her husband is not a vet, but he acts like he is one.

Creature Comfort is a true gem in Iowa City. Dr. VanderGaast is truly knowledgeable and cares about both the client and the patient. She is highly recommended.

First, she is capable of operating on tiny animals, such as pocket pets. This is tricky with anesthesia, yet she can do so competently. She was able to perform a full spay on my hedgehog.

Secondly, she has enough experience that she sees the unusual. After going to another vet religiously for 2 years for my dog??s problem of urinating in the house, Dr. VanderGaast immediately suspected there was a metabolic issue. Further testing ordered by her revealed the dog has Cushing??s disease. The doctor then spent countless hours on the phone with me, discussing options, and helping me educate myself through research and literature she had access to.

Thirdly, when my cat was ill with chronic renal failure, she somehow brought her back from the brink of death. She and her staff were so incredibly supportive through that week, I??m still stunned. The cat received cutting-edge care as well as old-fashioned TLC. When my cat was finally released, I was truly humbled by the care given to her by all of Creature Comfort??s staff.

Regarding the other comments, I have this to say:
1. Yes, they are remodeling. I can??t believe that would impact anyone??s opinion on medical services.

2. If there is an emergency, or you just want something checked on your animals, Dr. VanderGaast will not require you to update vaccinations to her schedule like so many other veterinarians will.

3. Dr. VanderGaast will discuss prices and options thoroughly with you, to make sure you get the treatment for your animal that works and that you can afford. Not many others do that, either.

I would strongly recommend this veterinarian.

We had a very bad experince with our puppy at this vet. We took our dog in to get his nails trimmed and a bath. When we picked him up a couple hours later he was crying, his nails were bleeding and his back side was covered in poop. They had not paid attention to his nails and affter giving him a bath they stuck him in a crate and did not watch him. He ended up sitting in his poop which defeated the purpose of the bath. (which we had to pay for and they did not offer to refund our money). Also the vets office is a complete disaster because they are remodeling. The walls are all torn apart and in some areas the flooring is gone. If you want your dog to have a positive experience when they go to the vet DO NOT take your dog to this one.

Dr. VanderGaast is one of the most caring, loving vets that I have ever encountered! She is wonderful with both of my cats and my dog as well. Additionally, her prices are very reasonable and she does not attempt to sell you services that many other vets will try to do. I totally respect and trust her judgment when in comes to the care of my animals, and I recommend her to anyone in search of quality care for their animals.

Newer veterinary clinic with full service for small pets. They specialize mostly in dogs and cats but will do an occasional bird or other household pet. Knowledgeable vets on staff and friendly front desk helpers. Very clean and well organized. They also offer pet boarding which includes private kennel as well as walks for your dog each day. Own parking lot and nicely shaded.
