Okay. I went to Camp Pokemoke once, and it was by far the worst camp experience I've ever had. Sure, it was great riding the horses, but we barely learned anything about caring for them, and we only got the chance to ride for an hour a day. The counselors were mean. They were inconsiderate and rude, and they never listened to what the campers had to say. The only part I liked was the few minutes I got to ride Fletcher.

Best experience ever! The counselors are really nice.
I was in one of the shows. My counselor was Taylor. she is the nicest one ever! The horses there are great for anyone.
The farm is really cute. They have 2 sheep called Nevil and Luna,2 donkeys called Jack and June bug,Lots of chickens /ducks,and 3 bunnies.1 called Whipper and 2 others. To me it is paradise.
I hope everyone who loves nature goes there next year.

Camp Pokamoke is the kind of experience that will be the funnest part of a kid's summer. The staff are exceptionally nice and involved. The horses are kept in great condition and are easy for first time riders. There are so many fun games and sports to play. Also family night gives the parent a chance to see what their child has been doing all week. Also Thursday night is an optional overnight for older kids. There are a variety of camps to choose from. There are horse groups for young and old kids, mountain biking, survival/hiking, sports, arts&crafts, adventurers(older kids who do highropes and ziplining), and every group swims everyday. I truely can't think of any cons except the bathrooms are sometimes unclean but it's camp so who cares? Camp Pokamoke is a camp that builds childhood memories and provides a safe and fun summer.

GAHHH!!! Camp Pokamoke is AMAZING. So is Kelli (the one below me). Anywhooo, I went to Camp Pokamoke when I was younger and I loved it so much I came back two years ago to be a Junior Counselor. It was the best summer of my life, spending time with the horses and the campers. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to work there this past summer, and it was the worst summer of my life. I miss it so much. I came to see a lot of the horse shows on Thursdays, and it made me so sad. ):

I've gone there for 7 years now and maybe now 7 1/2 after my 7th was mostly rainy. It was my start to working with horses, this place is the greatest place I've ever been. It's the only place I'd ever call my second home. I love the horses, the people, and just everything. It keeps me out of trouble for the summer. I love it! I want to be a juniour counselour and then a counselour. I wanna give back to everything the camp has done for me. It's heaven on Earth for me and i love EVERY minute of it. I hate having to leave and I wanna stay all summer. To anyone who works at camp: Tell Buffet, Hidalgo, Dezi, Bucky and Duke I love them and I miss them so much, tell them I'll be back soon! Camp is my family, even if everyone doesn't know me. It's the most amazing place to me. I always say I have Camp Pokamoke fever. I love the place.

My 5 year old went to Camp Pokamoke for her first camp experience. She enjoyed the day camp experience and wants to go again. She is looking forward to being old enough for the horse camp. I do have a concern on why they allowed 5 years olds to choose whether or not they wanted to swim in 50 degree weather?! I don't know why this would even be an option for a 5 year old to make. Advice to other parents: don't pack a swim suit unless the temperature is reasonable for swimming.

I have been to Camp Pokamoke for 13 years now, and I have loved every minute of it. This will be my fourth summer as a counselor. It is located in a beautiful forest in the Loess Hills just across the river from Omaha. Pokamoke is great because kids get to do a wide variety of activities--horseback riding and care of horses, archery, swimming, hiking, games, peting zoo, crafts, etc. They now even offer a mountain biking camp and mad science camp (although these are not available every week). It is nice for a first-time camper because they get to come home every night (although older kids have the option of staying overnight on Thursday). Every Thursday is family night, and parents get to come out and watch their child ride a horse or do a skit. Almost every child I have met loves this camp! Not only that, but it only costs $140-180 per week, which is much cheaper than most camps, and often cheaper than a babysitter or day care. Go to http://www.metroymca.org/FindFile.asp?ArticleID=306 for more info.

PROS: Oppurtunity for kids to see nature, learn new things, and meet new friends
CONS: There's dirt, bugs, no air-conditioning, no TV (but are these really cons?)

My daughters both attended Camp Pokeamoke for three years. It is a commuter camp - that is, they take a bus there every morning, which makes for a long ride in, but they had SO much fun there. The horse camp is super, they get to do a lot of riding which really was a hit with my girls, and learn to take care of horses. If your kids are leery of sleepaway camp, this option, provided by the YMCA is a great choice!

PROS:
CONS: Long bus ride in every day

I went to this camp when I was quite a bit younger but I have talked to several people who tell me it is exactly the same today. This was an awesome experience for me. I learned how to ride horses as well as take care of them and how to "survive" in the outdoors world. The counselors were very well trained and were all very caring and considerate of all the kids. They truly had the best interest of all the children (as well as the horses) at heart. The other amazing thing is everyone can go to this camp. The YWCA offers (or at least did when I was there) fundraisers to help raise the money for the fee to go to the camp which actually isn't that much to begin with.
