I went to La James in Iowa City last fall & thought it would be a great opportunity. It took me 2 weeks to realize I was DEAD WRONG. It was by far the worst schooling experience I've ever had. I paid $1,000 for my kit & on the day we recieved them we didn't even get it all. Our Esthetics instructor knew absolutely NOTHING about what she was teaching. We'd ask her questions & she would tell us she didn't know or she'd have to look into it. If we complained about not learning anything to the school they would tell us the teacher was trying her "hardest". Regaurdless, she was a very nice teacher, just not qualified to be teaching for the amount of money all of us were paying for to go there. None of the teachers there care about your education & it's blatantly obvious they only care about your money. Sure, they give a good sales pitch for incoming students & make it sound amazing. (Go figure) but DONT. It is one of the sketchiest, scam of a school I have ever seen. I am now paying $175 a month to pay back on borrowed loan money that I never even spent. I still owe $4,000 to that worthless place & it's rediculous. I'm going to talk to a lawyer about if their ways about students paying them all this money is even legal. It makes no sense what so ever. I'm glad I quit while I was only a couple months in because I would have rather kept my dignity than stayed & gotten a poor education & an Esthetics degree that meant absolutely nothing. I feel sorry for those of you who've graduated from La James & felt as if you knew nothing about what you went to school for. My only words of advice for people who are looking into going would be to choose somewhere else.. For the love of god, do not go to LJIC unless you have a LOT of time & money to waste on an unorganized, unlawful, poor excuse of a school.

I will admit I went here because it offered financial aid. I chose the Johnston location. It wasn't my first choice of schools, but I figured, how bad can it be? Stupid decision. First off, the cosmetology kit I paid for was $3,000, which is twice as much as the cosmo kit I paid for at the school I'm at now (which I love). At the school I'm at now, my kit came with products to use on clients. LJ's kit does not. You either have to buy product to use on your clients or resign yourself to the disgusting mismash of old shampoos and conditioners LJ has their students use. You do get a LOT of combs, cheap hair clips that don't hold hair very well, a hairdryer that is worse than a $5 WalMart hairdryer and...more combs. I was told the shears I received were "$500 shears." Total bs. I found a brand new pair online for $125. My teacher was horribly underqualified. My 5 year old stepdaughter could probably do her job. She just stood there and read from her computer's power point presentations. Her classes had no consistency, she taught whatever interested her at the time. Her "product knowledge" class time was laughable. It consisted of her reading the product description on the back of shampoo and conditioner bottles and gushing over which products smelled the best. I learned hardly anything on theory and a whole lot on pushing retail. She had us cutting mannequin hair on the SECOND DAY of class. We watched a dvd and were told to start cutting. She pointed out a few things I did wrong with my cut but then didn't bother to show me how to correct it. Then she said she wanted us to start getting clients in for cuts within the next week. I was freaked out! I had only been there a week and she was pushing us to start taking clients. I was there a week and couldn't take it. I dropped out thinking I would get my kit money back. After all, I was told I would get it back if I dropped out within the first two weeks. But I only got half of it back. On a different subject, they love to lure people in with "Travel with LaJames!" sounds great, right! Guess what, you have to pay for those too! They'll tell you all about the huge hair show in Chicago and how everyone goes. This is exactly what a teacher told me: "You don't need to worry about hotel rooms, meals, anything like that, we pay for that. We do require $500 for you to attend." So they don't pay for anything. That's what your money is going to. They advertise wonderful oversea trips too that you can even win. But be prepared to spend thousands. This school is run by total morons. They care nothing about their student's educations, all they care about is bringing money in. If you're thinking about going into the beauty industry, avoid this place like the plague. Unless you want a sub par education but really want to learn how to be a greedy, ethically questionable salesperson.

When I went to beauty school in Bloomington IL, at a place called Flamingo Beauty School, we only had one teacher. A second teacher for Esthetics...LOL.
As for the 5000, hasn't changed much in the last 35 years when I went, it was about the same. I went to Chicago and competed (2nd place), and I had to pay for it all on my own. Yep, you ran out of product you had to buy more. Just like when I went to Blackhawk, if I ran out of paper for a class I had to buy it, or a pen.
School is for basic knowledge, the salon gives you the experience, just like any other trade.

i am a student at la james international and i have to say that i hate it. it seems like most of the teachers don't want to help you or are looking for the quickest fix to get you out of their hair. we have no esthetics teacher and our last one was horribly under-qualified. we currently have a cosmetologist teaching our esthetics class while still teacher her cosmos, most of the time in the same classroom. while i do know many of the things we learn are the same, esthetics tend to go in depth with their theory and core lives. Also while i do believe this teacher is qualified and works hard at her job, we need to have someone teaching us who knows precisely what we're doing and how to do it, not someone who reads over the book the week before. Its seems like we as estheticians get overlooked a lot and are being kind of jipped out of an education. so if you are looking for a career in this field, im going to tell you now that la james is way more of a headache than it is worth.

Occasionally I'll stop here for a cut, color, massage or facial. However, it's always hit or miss. It's cheap and the students normally do a pretty decent job but I probably won't ever get my hair cut here again. The first couple of times

I was not only a student at La James I was an instructor there as well. The girls that talk about their terrible experience there are not in anyway exaggerating. The school is very corrupt and the only thing they are there to do is make money. I joined the cadet program after graduating so I could teach because that is what I really wanted to do. The first day of my cadet program I was given the curriculum and told to go teach. Later when I was hired as an instructor I was told I would teach esthetics which was totally wrong because I was only a licensed cosmetologist. I was given the book to teach that class one week before the class started. I always only remained a week ahead of my students. If they asked me a question my usual answer was that I promised to find an answer for them. i took teaching very seriously and I loved my students. My daughter was only two and had the flu I wanted to be with her and I was told by the owner of the school during a staff meeting that my responsibility was to be at the school she didn't care if my daughter was in the hospital or not. I wish the people who frequented La James as clients knew how much stress and abuse the students at the school suffer while they are there. We had a girl that was getting beaten by her boyfriend and didn't come to school at times and the owner herself pulled her into the office to talk about her attendance and told her she had to be at school or get kicked out. I still wish I was teaching cosmetology because I enjoyed it immensely the girls all meant the world to me, but I will never again step foot in a La James College. I will give the school one star because the students there are awesome.

Like many of the girls have wrote here La' James could care less about you and more about the money. I Most of the teachers there are ok but one teacher there who is only 22 is one of the most rude people I have met. She would talk crap about past student and clients while in Theory class. Also would be quite rude when you tried to ask a question and say you should know that already and go find the answer your self. They are teachers, they are there to answer questions. When I tried to leave to transfur to another school they told me I would have to pay $6700 that I some how owed. as well as $100 drop fee $100 paperwork fee $500 dorm contract break. I only did around 800 hours and some how Owed $7,000 of the $24,000 for school. I was not even half way done! They owed me money! They frequently change rules, play favorites and let behavior happen that should never be tolerated. I had some ideas for things that should be added such as exstentions and airbrush makeup, they would not let me talk to the owner about this and just said your s*** out of luck. This school is nothing but a money mill. I loved the girls there and some of the staff but this is a poorly ran school. I am currently in a Law Suit to be able to get my credits that I payed for. They refuse to give them to me until the "balance" is paid for.

I too had a horrible experience at La James College, East Moline, IL campus.

First of all La James NEVER allows you to see a financial aid advisor EVER! You always have to do your financial aid on the phone and are NEVER told about all of the other hidden expenses!

Anyone seeking to have a career in cosmetology should absolutely never consider La James International College!

The "free" trips your promised upon registration are absolutely NEVER free or included in your tuition as several students were promised! You have to pay for each and every one of those trips out of pocket, some of the trips are in the range of over $5,000 to attend abroad. Then you have the hair shows which the big one is in Chicago. You have to pay at least $500 to go on that trip!

La James also makes the students, pay not only $5,000 for their kits, but you also have to pay for every single extra product you run out of to do their clients hair with!
Several of the students are also charged overages at the rate of $8.00 per hour if they miss any school even when you have a legitimate excuse! Now what kind of a college is that which charges its students overages when they had to be there anyway! That is just insane and also NEVER mentioned when you register!

This is just a little about this corrupt school!

I recently was a student at La James Intl. in Fremont, NE. In my opinion, it was the worst learning experience that I've ever experienced! I hated going to school everyday. When I did go to school, nothing was consistent. Things like the rules, what the school offered (the courses, like barbering) and staff. When I attended school at La James, I went for about 7 months. During these 7 months we were under different management 3 times. Our recruetor, and two instructors quit/ resigned. With all of this going on, the students, and staff became extremley stressed. The instructor I had for Mod 1/ Freshman class became the manager of the school. (After the first two had quit.) They hired a student that had recently graduated to be the schools recruetor. Two woman that had recently graduated also became "student instructors" but were put right out on the floor, to check haircuts and such, because we were so short handed. I signed a lease to live at the dorm, which I paid $3000.00 for. While living at the dorm, Nancy (the dorm mother) had many conflicts with the girls, and myself. She would yell up the stairs (frequently) and told us to be quiet and go to bed at 10:00. She left a letter on the sink, saying that we were the worst behaved, must disrespectful girls she had ever had! Her and I had other incidents where she involved other people in an inappropriate manner. My mom came to the dorm one night to pick up some of my laundry. ( The visiting hours end at 10:00 every night.) My mom was there at 10:04 and other girls had visitors in their dorm. She immediatley came to my room and told me "Your guest has to leave now." She called my mom a b**ch and asked her if she even paid the bill. After my mom called corporate they told her nothing could be done. Also in the dorm, the ceiling of the bathroom is COVERED in mold! Some girls were going to the doctor for respiratory problems and the school took no action. When I attended the school for the 7 months I didn't receive one haircolor or highlight. When I was 5 months through the course and I hadn't received one yet, I told someone at the corporate office that I would like/ and need a haircolor or highlight. A month went by and nothing happened. I then told the manager of our school and the receptionist. I waited another month and still never received one. The theory at this school is AMAZING though! Taught by mrs. Clayton who has been teaching there, for i believe over 30 years. I learned SO much from her, not just during theory but on the clinic floor also.

I recently celebrated the birthday of both a six and eight year old. We decided to give LaJames a try. It was fabulous. With a total of eight girls at the party I thought they would have to take turns to get their hair, nails and make-up done, but each girl had their own stylist and we had up-dos, nails, and make-up done in less than two hours. The girls had a blast! The whole experience cost me less than any other place in town. I paid $7 for hair, $7 for nails and $6 for make-up.

I've had my hair cut and colored here over the years, over about 20 years. I can remember when they were downtown, somewhere above the Brown Bottle. This Brewery Square location is nice and the spa atmosphere is so take me away you'd never know where you were if someone magically put you there!

It all depends on who you get, and if you like the stylist be ready for her/him to graduate and move away before you'd like that to happen!

They are not the best at keeping records and tend to lose the records on which haircolor I use. Sometimes they do not have records of appointments made when I show up for the appoingment...but they always manage to fit me in.

Their current phone tree is annoying - dial a local number and then have to listen to two menus before you get someone to simply book an appointment.

Kepe your eyes open for coupons.

I've had my hair cut and colored here over the years, over about 20 years. I can remember when they were downtown, somewhere above the Brown Bottle. This Brewery Square location is nice and the spa atmosphere is so "take me away" you'd never know where you were if someone magically put you there!

It all depends on who you get, and if you like the stylist be ready for her/him to graduate and move away before you'd like that to happen!

They are not the best at keeping records and tend to lose the records on which haircolor I use. Sometimes they do not have records of appointments made when I show up for the appoingment...but they always manage to "fit me in."

Their current phone tree is annoying - dial a local number and then have to listen to two menus before you get someone to simply book an appointment.

Kepe your eyes open for coupons.

If you are looking for a cheap way to pamper yourself look no further. This is a teaching salon that can perform anything from haircuts and colors, massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. Though I have never used their services for major hairstyle changes (cuts or colors) I have used them for the majority of their other services and I have been exceedingly pleased. Last summer I was in a wedding where the bride booked appointments for 12 ladies to get up-dos, pedicures, and manicures the day of the wedding, and we were treated wonderfully. We were given our own private section of the salon, all kept together, and treated like royalty. The work they do is superior to many non-teaching establishments because the students are being graded and instructors are constantly patrolling the area to ensure that the work they are doing is up to par. The next time I need to pamper myself I will be using La James, and I would recommend that you do to! The prices are unbeatable and the customer service and quality of work is phenomenal!
