This is by far my favorite restaurant/bar in Iowa City, and is somewhat of a "Best Kept Secret", so I hope it stays that way after this review is written! Why this place is unbelievable, is the oak wood paneling, the HUMONGOUS beer and wine list, and also is also the fact that they put on some amazing concerts in one part of the building, and the other is like you're transported to some European gastropub! Simply, I've never had a liquor not stocked, or a drink unknown, simply because they seem too have everything, even absinthe(the kind with wormwood)!!

My favorite drink there is this Brazilian Caipirinha, that is squeezed limes and sugar cane juice, nothing like rum, and oh so delicious! Eat some of the veggie lasagna, shrimp or a lamb slider if you're not afraid of meat!

It'd be fitting if they had someone to look at passports at the front, because it definitely doesn't seem remotely like anything the states has to offer!!!

I must admit, this is one of those restaurants that I had not frequented much in the past few months...and I honestly do not know why.

Not only is the atmosphere fantastic with its rustic charm and hand hewn beams and such, but the food is top class with dishes ranging from your basic beef dishes to pasta dishes that make my mouth water just writing this review! That combined with a laid back atmosphere and great customer service makes this restaurant a "5" in my book and further cememnets my decision to visit here more often!

Take my adivce....try out this restaurant...you won't be sorry...I'm not!

PROS: ....great food....great service
CONS: ...so much to choose from I have problems deciding!

Absolutely fantastic atmosphere. An old building, lots of wood trim. Wonderful soft lighting that doesn't come off as trashy. No loud music, no loud kids--just the pleasant chatter of middle-aged hepsters and the clink of ice against glass. The dining area is small and cozy. Everything just *works*.

The beer selection was huge and varied and the only American macro I saw sight of was PBR (which might have explained the lack of college kids in a college town at 9:00 on a Friday night). A complete list is available at their website. All the beer's were quite reasonably priced, too.

The food was good, but not great. They were fresh out of the pasta dish that my fiance and I wanted so we got a pizza instead. For a pizza it was above average, the sauce might have had a bit too much red pepper in it but that's just personal preference. I've been told that the actual entres are a lot better.

The waiter was very nice. I didn't need to test his beer knowledge, since all the beers are summarized quite nicely on a beer menu that each tables comes replete with. The menu is a great touch in a place like this, to not have to walk up to the bar and stare down into the fridge and point to what you want like a kid at an ice cream truck). Some beers even had their high Beer Advocate scores listed next to them!

It's a hard choice between this and OC. From what I've heard about the crowds the OC draws at night, though, you might want to go there for lunch, shop downtown Iowa City for a few hours, and then stop by Sanctuary for dinner.

PROS: Lots of great beer and tasty food
CONS: none!
