Manhattan Deli

I love going here on Thursdays, when the special is the Italian Grinder. Out of this world tasty. I have taken three separate groups and all have loved the food. My in-laws have been going for years. One special day we went, Zach Johnson, with family and friends, was eating there. Apparently it was his favorite place when he was at Drake. They named a sandwich after him and it is unbelievably good. I'm not a cold meat sandwhich guy at all, in fact I hate them... except for this one. Of course I haven't tried any other sandwich as I can't see a reason to try anything else. My family gets the reuben, the turkey on white, the smoker and the Liberty. You can't go wrong, unless you don't try them. Tell Vito hi, she is the Mom of the owner and is simply a treat.

This place is a gem! I'm not a picky eater about sandwiches, but Manhattan Deli seems to make the the best--I love the fun atmosphere and the friendly services.

Even if you don't know what the special is, you will not go wrong! Their sandwiches are out of this world! It gets very busy in there over lunch and sometimes there isn't even a seat. The chocolate cookies are a favorite of mine because they are always warm and fresh. The cheeseburger chowder is also another good option. Remember to bring cash or you will be hitting up the ATM that they have in the store.

While the bright yellow benches of Manhattan Deli may not impress, the family-operated delicatessen's menu certainly will. On any given lunch hour Manhattan is filled with hungry patrons, many of them regular haunts. A quick survey will show that the hot sandwiches are by far the most popular item-- and definitely the tastiest, too! Manhattan also offers a selection of traditional cold deli items including salads and sandwiches and a selection of soups.
For first time patrons, its a shame to try anything other than a hot sub. Manhattan has perfected the classics like the roast beef sub and makes a mean Italian. Though regulars are known by name, the restaurant staff may lose track of orders as daily specials keep even the deli's die hards on their toes.
Do yourself a favor and take a break from the posher, pricier Des Moines delis-- Manhattan is sure to satisfy.
