Duncan's Pet Shop is a wonderful little pet store!

by M Y.

I have been shopping at Ducan's pet shop for years and although they are smaller with less inventory, I do like the store a lot. I have always been treated well when I come in and sometimes I do have to wait, but that's okay. I just browse a little longer when there is a line. I have gone in to buy fish food once and came out with a kitten! My husband was not very thrilled with that and was a little confused about what happened! lol! The smell is a normal pet store. As far as the kittens and puppies, they sell these animals from local people that bring them in to find homes. They get their first shots going and vet visits and they still only charge $20.00 for the animal. Well that was the price on my kitten back then. They don't "order" them as far as what I've seen. Some pet stores "order" them like they would any other inventory and then put them into there rows of many cages.(I know this because I worked at one many yrs ago..can you say puppy mill?) That is why they don't consistently have puppies/kittens or rows of cages dedicated to puppies and kittens like other pet stores do. It is random when you will see a few there.....or even 1 for that matter. There prices aren't bad either. You can always find cheaper prices online, but when you need to go somewhere close to your house and now, I know I really appreciate that they are there. Because they are small, the manager actually works out on the floor most times. That means that they may be on the phone ordering or taking care of business, they don't have the benefit of having a nice big office to spend all day in while the rest of the staff does everything else. They are directly involved with the customers as they come in. Cut them some slack people. They are a great little pet store. If I could change anything it would be that they carried more inventory and kept up on their current inventory (the downfall of not having everything controlled by a computer..like the big stores have). That is the only reason for the 4 star vs 5 star is inventory. I know I would be very sad if they ever went out of business.

Duncan's Pet Shop is a great shop

by james k.

I agree with the previous reviewer - give the Duncan's staff a break! I'm always treated well there and the staff is extremely knowledgable. They do get very busy at times and customers have to wait their turn but when it's your turn you are given all the time you need to solve a problem, answer a question, or make your purchase. You are treated like family at Duncan's. Top quality products, animals, and staff. It's a clean pet shop. If you think it "smells" - it's a pet shop and you will have pet "smells". Cages are clean and puppies and kittens are happy and well cared for. Their prices are surprisingly lower than I thought they would be for a little local shop.

Duncan's Pet Shop is great

by Janelle S.

I have been going to Duncan's for over 15 years. I have never had a problem with them. Yes, occasional you may need to wait, but I am one who will seek out a worker and let her know that I am ready. There are many people who come in just to browse. The clerks do not necessarily know when a person is ready to be checked out. Sometimes the customer needs to do his or her part on making the environment a pleasant one. If you are too lazy or inconsiderate that you cannot let the cashier know that you are ready, then don't blame the workers. I have always gotten what I want, but I don't expect people to wait on me hand and fist. You have a voice and the ability to make yourself heard. If you failed to leave your phone number, than you are partly at fault, give them a break. These comments are coming from the next generation of what us oldies are calling the entitledment generation. You are entitled to be waited on all the time and right now!! Get over it. You need to put some effort in the task at hand too.

Duncan's Pet Shop is HORRIBLE

by H L.

Any time that I have visited Duncan's, I have been hugely disenchanted. The overwhelming putrid smell of uncleaned cages & animals overpowers. The employees lack anything resembling customer service; and the lack of stock make it impossible to shop here. Don't bother supporting this local store.

Tried and tried again

by noel t.

I have given Duncans every opportunity to have my patronage and every time they disappoint. It makes supporting "the local shop" impossible. I have stood for 5 min (yes there is a clock in plain site) at the counter waiting for check out, no one else in line, without even 1 persons acknowledgment. Three people were working at that time, 1 in the bird area, 1 walking around on the cordless shop phone having a light-hearted personal call, and 1 helping someone in the fish area. The shop is not that big and still not one person could say, "ill be with you in just a minute" UGH! I have ordered a size of collar because they did not have more than 1 size in stock, left my phone #, waited 2 weeks, called in to check the delivery status, and they said. "oh we haven't ordered it yet, we didn't know what size you needed". My reply, "you had my phone # next to the item description". There is absolutely NO customer service. No one will take the extra step needed to elevate above a fast food drive through. I will drive the half hour up the worst HWY in rush hour traffic next time where at least I know someone would ring me up. If Duncans doesn't stay in business it wont be because they couldn't compete with the box stores prices or inventory.

Beware of cute animals indeed.

by Anonymous

While Duncan's Pet Shop features some of the higher quality dog and cat foods, including grain free and allergy diets, their pet care is abysmal. Another reviewer mentioned to beware of the cute animals, however you shouldn't let their cuteness distract you from the empty food and water dishes and feces piled in the corners. Every time I stop in I review the animals. The cockatiels never have enough food or water. The ferret cage had a massive pile of feces (and as a ferret owner I am aware of how long it takes a sizeable pile to accumulate). Selling puppies and kittens while shelters are putting down hundreds of puppies and kittens is a tragedy.

Do the animals a favor, shop at a farm feed store (all in the area carry the same dog and cat foods) or from Petco or Petsmart, where animal care is closely watched by both the staff and public eyes.

Beware of Cute Animals

by Kathryn W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,458

If you aren't looking for a pet, be careful! Duncan's has some cute animals who will try to worm their way into your heart. They also have some less typical, less cute pets. There may not be a zoo in Coeur d'Alene, but there are plenty of animals to see in this shop. I have been pleased with the animals and the supplies I have purchased here. Easy to get to location, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Your first trip won't be your last.

Duncan's always has the cutest little puppies and kittens for sale. They also sell wonderful fish, fresh and salt water types. Plus pet food and supplies for any kind of animal! Excellent services!
