The Scene
Goose Island is loud and raucous on weekends, drawing big crowds for drinking or catching sports on TVs scattered throughout the giant rehabbed warehouse. Beer is everywhere--glasses, buckets and tanks of it, from light lagers to heavy stouts. If you're going to eat, avoid the heavy brews at first. Go with something light like the Blonde Ale, robust and smooth. Honkers Ale also is a good choice, slightly fruity and not too thick.

The Draw
Food made with beer includes the brewer's Stilton burger, a half pound of pepper-crusted prime beef served on grilled marbled rye and smothered with the English cheese, roasted garlic and Goose mustard. The blackened catfish po' boy is also a hit. Beer-battered fries are long, medium-cut potatoes that crunch and don't succumb to drooping. Bigger appetites will love the 12-ounce strip steak, served with fresh vegetables and sauteed mushrooms.

Key Points

  • Large parking lot
  • Tours and tastings
  • Great for private parties

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - Bloody Marys are garnished with a big stuffed olive, celery and a marinated pepperoncini, plus a wine glass-sized chaser of Honkers Ale.
  2. Know Before You Go - The oatmeal stout cheesecake is baked by legendary Eli's especially for Goose Island; the hint of stout is quite delicate in the traditional Chicago-style cheesecake.
  3. Save Money - More than 40 beers are brewed throughout the year. Order a sampler: three or more five-ounce glasses at $1 each.

Goose Island

by Anonymous

If you're new to Goose Island Beer, you can come by and sample three of their beers for only $5 (if I remember correctly, they are 6oz samples). The patio is nice and surprisingly good for a family night out. Even though its on the kids menu, the baked mac and cheese is delicious!

Blah

by bkrchi

Nothing unique about this place or the food. The food and ambiance resembles any Bennigans or Applebee's. I enjoy Goose Islands brew but this poor attempt at a restaurant was disappointing to say the least. With all the great places to eat in this city why bother with something so uninspired.

Pros: Goose Island beer

Cons: the awful menu, its garbage

Great beer, good food, fun service

by andrewap

I was in Chicago briefly a few weeks ago and I heard good things about Goose Island. I decided to check it out and was more than pleased. The beer... mmmm... delicious and unique (the matilda is superb) and the drinks are reasonably priced (usually a dollar per Alc. %). I had the fish tacos, which were very good, not at all what I would call "bar food". The service was lively and firendly - a nice place to whittle three hours away.

Pros: service, food/drinks, atmosphere

Cons: food is a little over priced

Terrible Service

by savg_pncl

If you read most of these reviews you will notice one consistent theme: the lack of service. Food is not much better. Restaurant is dirty (creepy crawlers at the bar). Beer is "craft" but not worth the $$$. Save your money and stay at home.

Pros: Only beer pub in the city.

Cons: Only beer pub in the city.

Beer way too $$$$

by bpyaxley

This place has good food but it is quite pricey. The turkey burgers were good but the beer cost $7 a glass. They were small glasses too. I would recommend heading to Rock Bottom instead

Pros: fun ambience

Cons: way too pricey

An Island We Never Want To Visit Again

by flyinglasagna

First timers, new Chicagoans. Ordered beers, very good (wheat, red ale, lincoln park lager). Bartenders grouchy, but busy. Server seemed "put out" at get-go, was curt. No descriptions, no suggestions. Ordered beers, nachos, burgers. Very good. Burgers seemed a little undercooked (medium was super pink), but tasty (mushroom swiss, stilton). Good nacos, nice portion, unique presentation....lotsa jalapenos. Server irritated at anything we asked for, never checked back, never brought requested boxes (busser later brought), left sitting long after finished, never smiled once, and rolled eyes when stopped and handed credit card. Returned charge slips, but never provided bill. Noted on charge slip her horrible attitude (tip was low), she responded with dirty looks. Will NOT return, will NOT bring guests when they come to town. Many places in Chicago w/ great burgers, good service, and many have Goose Island on tap.

Pros: Good Beer, Good Food, Decent Parking

Cons: Poor Server Attitude, Slow Service

This is a Brewery

by binky73069

Although I agree the service is not the best in the world at Goose Island, it is a Brewery. They specialize in beer not small talk. The food is delicious, and the beers are better. I highly reccomend Goose Island if you like local beer.

Rude Staff

by pjgdallas

It is rare that I take time to sit down and review a restaurant. It has to be (a) extremely noteworthy or (b) extremely bad. Unfortunately, this brewpub falls into the latter category mainly because of the exceptionally poor service. I was in over the weekend for lunch and some drinks at the bar. Our server ignored us even after making eye contact and verbally acknowledging that we required service. Finally, we spoke with the manager who apologized and (after asking our new waiter) compensated us for our troubles. None of this changed how we felt when we left -- vowing to never return.

Pros: Great beer

Cons: Inattentive staff, Loud

Great Beer -- Poor Service

by savgpncl

I have been going to this brew pub for years and it used to be a pretty good place for lunch and still is a wonderful place for hand crafted beer. Unfortunately, as with many establishments nowadays, they have allowed lackluster service to overshadow everything. I have had to wait 20(+) minutes for a server on numerous occasions. When the food came it had to be sent back. No water, menus, or silverware without requesting it. Warm beer at the bar. You name it. Save your money: buy it in a bottle and take it home with you.

Pros: Great beer

Cons: Poor service.

Service Issues

by slfrst

Great beer at this... the best brew pub in the city. I would have to concur with the other review on this site regarding the service. I am a regular at this establishment and it is rare that the bartender will ask you if you would like water or anything else for that matter. It used to be a lot different here once upon a time but I believe they have lost their focus.

Pros: Brewer

Cons: Service

Terrible Service

by mcnkl_dzyn

This brewpub has great beer but everything else spoils it. The staff are extremely inattentive to the point of absurdity. I was in with friends and was very embarassed by the treatment we received. Twenty minutes for a server who acted like she was doing us a favor.

Pros: Beer

Cons: Service

Neat Brewery

by jaye_shaw

I had a beer here once that had a hint of bananas! I really liked it and got a large bottle to take home. The food was ok, nothing special about burger and fries anyway.

Pros: variety of beers

Cons: meter parking
