The Scene
Brick-red walls and playful details combine with luxurious, velvety furnishings and cherry-wood floors to create a fun, stylish, cozy atmosphere. Eighteen-foot ceilings allow for grand, square columns, beaded chandeliers and stage-worthy red drapes.

The Food
Warm focaccia starts the meal--but go easy, as appetizers are generous. Try mild, crispy duck quesadillas, given a pleasant kick from chili-spiked salsa. Tender, bite-sized ahi tuna and salmon tartare is layered onto fried wontons with wasabi viniagrette. Creative seasonal entrees include duck breast, capellini, chicken breast and mussels. Grilled ahi tuna is deliciously sweet and salty with capers and garlicky butter. Lunch specialties include Atwood's signature chicken pot pie, sealed with a flaky buttermilk biscuit crust, while breakfast kick starts the day with delicious three-egg omelettes and toasted pecan waffles.

Key Points

  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Prix-fixe Pre-theater Menus
  • Private Dining and Events

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - During the winter, high tea is a treat, with finger sandwiches, pastries and individual tea service ($20).
  2. When to Go - Monday nights feature smaller tasting portions of dinner menu plates along with two-ounce pours of 10 wines not offered by the glass.
  3. Save Money - A fixed-price menu of starter, entree and dessert ($38 with wine, $28 without) is perfect for pre-theater dining.

Perfect Luncheon Spot in the Loop

by Christine Z. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,165

This is truly a great place to have lunch (or dinner) in the Loop. Located in the Burnham Hotel, just across from Marshall Field's, its location is not the key to its success...the food is. This beautifully decorated cafe may be small in size, but it is big in taste and affordably priced. There are many worthy menu selections, which are updated periodically. Waitstaff is helpful, not pretentious. Reservations are recommended as the cafe is small and those in the know keep the place busy. Don't miss this great lunch spot; it's sure to become one of your favorites.

PROS: great food in a beautiful setting
CONS: go early if you don't have reservations

Good food

by rr6789

I thought that this would just be another over-priced hotel restaurant, but the service and food quality make this restaurant well worth the visit. My meal was so good i even decided to have dessert, (which i never do). I was very pleased with my experience here.

Pros: food, friendly service in a timely manner

Cons: slightly pricey

Fine food and even better ambiance

by jaxma1

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at the Atwood. The food was beautifully presented and tasted excellent! The waiter was friendly and accomodating, all while being very professional. As awesome as the starters and entrees are, save room for dessert. You will not be disappointed!

Fantastic. Everyone should eat here.

by mloudermilk01

We went to the Atwood Cafe for the first time for my mom's birthday, and it was one of the best restaurant experiences i have ever had. This place puts out some very big flavors for such a small location. The ahi tuna and salmon tartar was our favorite appetizer of the evening. My mm loved her filet with truffle butter. I had an arctic char with rosemary sauce that was absolutely divine. we all enjoyed their banana bread pudding with white chocolate and caramel. all the portions were extremely generous and the staff was very attentive (for instance, i am an aspiring restaurateur, and the manager came over to have a lengthy discussion about the industry with me) over all, the Atwood Cafe offers not only a good meal but also a fantastic dining experience.

Love the Atwood Cafe!

by Melrod26

I have been there a few times for breakfast and each time it has been great! The food and service are awesome and the atmosphere is cozy and romantic. While I have never been for dinner or lunch I would definitely reccomend the Atwood for breakfast or brunch.

A real Gem!

by sugarywitch

The food here is nothing short of super. The beef pasta is fantastic as are the lamb chops. All the starters and desserts I have tried have also been wonderful. The ambiance is also to die for, it could not be a nicer place to enjoy a lovely lunch or a pre-theater dinner, though they tend to want you out a little early if you go for a later dinner.

Pros: Great space and lovely food

Cons: Not a great place for a later dinner

It was OK - expensive for the meals

by razldazlrr

We went after Wicked - I made reservations several days earlier for 4 - they had us down for 3 - they questioned me about it and they were not very nice. You would have thought it was a HUGE problem switching a 3 to a 4. I eat out in Chicago quite often - the atmosphere was nice and cozy. The food was average for the expensive price. Two people had the duck breast which was medium well - not medium rare and another had lamb chops which were well done - not even close to med rare. The desserts were very good - nothing exceptional. It was over $200 for 4 with 3 glasses of wine.

Superior Food and Service

by spiders13

My wife and I went here before Wicked last night. We called at 3 to get reservations and were lucky to get them. This place is amazing. We had the calamari which blew us away. We also both had the filet mignon, again, could not have tasted better. Despite the pre theatre crowd, service was not lacking. This place really knows how to make it work. Great food, drinks, and service! Highly recommend. not the most romantic place as it tends to get a little loud due to its smaller size

Pros: service, food

WTF!

by chocobliss

I went on a dinner date to Atwood Cafe; it did not live up to all the hype. If you want something on the menu from their website, call ahead to see if they actually serve it; the website isn't updated. The salad was unbelievably bitter. It was uncomfortable dining in couches; we had to lean forward to eat our food. My date ordered a drink and it was served to him in a chipped glass. When he told the waitress about how the glass might be in his drink, she replaced the glass but with the old drink inside. I was charged for a side order that was not served to me. But we couldn't complain about the waitress herself, and the main course I ordered was delicious (the salmon) as well as the carmel apple tart. However, we won't be going back to the Atwood Cafe.

Pros: entrees, dessert

Cons: ambience, overall service
