Aren't using your jewelry anymore? Have it re-purposed at H Horowitz. I had a friendly and informative transaction there, and can recommend them without qualification.

As my father has dealt with Horwitz for about 30 years - he recommended I pay them a visit as I was in need of a simple watch band repair for an old Movado I own.\n\nA young professional that is new to the city, and working downtown, the Water Tower location was extremely convenient from the Red Line and a joy to visit. \n\nI was treated like family by Craig, his mother Phyllis (the NICEST business owner in the entire city who still works everyday and is in her 80's!!) and Lima. \n\nThis is truly another fine example of a hidden gem business that you expect to find in a major city like Chicago. It is not in the main mall section, but rather tucked away on the Professional level. The store's beautiful setting is IDEAL for honest advice and no-pressure buying for something that is truly special. When I need to buy that ring one day for my girlfriend, no matter where I live, I will make a trip to Chicago to get advice from Craig. He's already given me some tips, and without a doubt he is one of the most knowledgeable jewelry experts in the city.\n\nThis store is worlds apart from a chain jeweler store or major designer, as you really get a sense of pride from Craig and Phyllis, as they have continued this family's legacy for over 113 years. \n\nCannot say enough! Thank you Horwitz!

Our experience with H. Horwitz Jewelers has been has always been fantastic. Craig has over-delivered on craftsmanship and service time and time again. We just took delivery of our third purchase and as before the experience is second to none.

What an amazing experience! We have had three custom pieces of jewelry made here and I can't tell you how beautiful they are! Craig and his mother are wonderful, they bring you in like part of the family. Craig worked so hard to make our pieces perfect! Everyone should get their estate and custom jewelry here!

My husband and I bought our wedding rings from Craig last winter. We were both impressed by his thoughtful approach to designing bands that would compliment my engagement ring as well as his demonstrated integrity while conducting business. We returned to Craig to have my antique engagement ring cleaned; it came back looking better than new. It is important to us that we support honest businesses that offer great products and services. H Horwitz is definitely on our list of businesses we will continue to support.

My family dealt with Horwitz for some 40 years. They continue to be the best in the business. They will design, help you design and/or find whatever you are looking for. I just sold an engagement ring back to Horwitz that was purchased from them in 1965! Craig then went on the hunt to find to most perfect earings. I used the proceeds from the engagement ring to buy the earlngs! He takes the time to thoroughly explain everything but he does not ""sell'. That is a refreshing change. \nHorwitz is a hidden jewel that is head and shoulders above any quality or pricing you could find on jewelers row! It is the only place to go for jewelry!

My family has had dealings with Craig for about 20 years. I first sold him some of my mother's jewelry & we got a very fair price. he is very thorough & honest & helpful.\n\n5 years i upgraded my wedding band & engagement ring. he very patiently gave both my husband & I information on the size, clarity & color of diamnds that all go to determine their value. He showed us many stones, we made our selection & are most happy with the rings. i get compliments all the time on my beautiful rings.\n\nOur daughter was married 3 years ago & again, he helped them create a beautiful diamond & sapphire engagement ring and an all diamond wedding ring. he gave them a very good price & tutored them on the value of their selection. \n\nlast year our son got engaged & he had designed a special ring for the wedding. craig drew drawings of his interpretation of the ring & made wax impresisons osf eh settings. He sent to our son in washington, dc. The final selection was amazing & very unique. Our new dtr in law is thrilled with her rings as is our son.\n\npossibly my favorite purchase from craig is a diamond & sapphire ensemble of pendant, earrings, bracelet & ring. craig very patiently showed us many saphires & helped us match the color of the sapphires & the result is magnificent.\n\nI highly recommend Craig Horowitz. he is a wonderful & talented jeweler & we always get our order in plenty of time for the occasion.

We were looking for a special engagement ring and after visits to many other jewelers (none of whom very extremely helpful), we visited H Horwitz. Craig was very helpful, and he really knows his stuff about diamonds, that's for sure. He carefully and comprehensively described and discussed our options since we were specifically looking for a diamond that could not be associated with dodgy practices in the modern diamond industry (""blood diamonds"", for example).\nWe eventually settled on an estate diamond set into a new setting. \nThe custom design turned out exceptionally well and we have gotten many comments about the ring's beauty and quality. We are very happy with the ring, and will be back for the wedding bands. While you probably can't expect a brand-new ring in a week, we allowed enough time for creating something special and are glad we worked with H Horwtiz.

I wanted to make a custom bracelet for my girlfriend hoping to get it done as soon as possible. I was told 2 to 3 weeks and it took about 2 months after I had already made a $1,000 deposit. The service here is very slow, they do not work very hard. But the bracelet I got was perfect and was for the price we agreed on. They do very good work, but you have to be patient. If you have plenty of time to get the jewelry, they will do good work for you. Just be prepared to get frustrated with the service. The man in charge is nice, and seems like he knows the business, he is just real slow.

I created a citysearch account just now just so that I could write a review for H Horwitz.\n\nI purchased an engagement ring for my partner at H Horwitz and worked directly with Craig. The ring was custom made and he worked with me over several revisions of the ring design until we got it just right. He made several suggestions to the final design that really demonstrated to me that he understood my vision. I don't buy fine jewelry often, so I'm no expert, but I think he gave me a great deal. The ring was later appraised at much more than I paid for. \n\nOne thing I really liked about the process was how much I learned about the cuts of stones and why things are valued a certain way. You can tell that Craig is an expert and if you show interest, he'll explain the stuff to you in a simple way... no pushy sales tactics here.\n\nI'll be going back to them for my jewelry needs in the future.

When I traveled from Florida to Chicago and purchased jewelry from this wonderful store, not only was I pleased with my sparkling purchases, but I also was thrilled to deal with such wonderful people. Craig and Phyllis treated me as if I were the most important person in the world, and they made sure I was completely satisfied. Each time I go back to Chicago, their store will definitely be at the top of my list of places to visit. The jewelry I saw in their store was top of the line, and they went out of their way to grant my wishes with exactly what I was searching for. The overall experience was perfect, and I felt so appreciative of Craig and Phyllis and the way they treated me. They are magnificent--and so is the jewelry that is now mine!

Craig and his team provides exceptional service at a good value. They worked with us over the course of several months creating the perfect ring. I wouldn't use another jeweler in Chicago. Highly recommend... and the hand engraving they do is beautiful !!.

I am sorry to say that I had an extremely disappointing experience with H. Horwitz. The few times I interacted with staff, they were courteous, but I don?t feel that the company worked very hard to sell my jewelry.\n\nIn February of 2009, I brought in a diamond engagement ring that had originally been purchased for about $6,700. The gentleman I spoke to told me that I could either sell the ring directly to the company for $3,500 or I could put it on consignment for the price of $5,000 (sale price to be negotiable if a lower offer came in). I agreed to place the ring under consignment.\n\nI followed up twice in an 18-month period ? no sale. I finally decided to take the ring off consignment and reclaim it in August of 2010. At that time, I was told that an offer for the diamond alone had been submitted for $1,750. I was notified of this offer via email, by a representative of H. Horwitz and was told that it was a good deal, as similar diamonds were selling for between $2,000 and $2,200.\n\nWhen I reconfirmed that I wanted to take the ring back, I was advised that ?we can?t achieve $4,000? on the ring but ?maybe higher than our current offer?.\n\nAgain I confirmed that I wanted to take the ring back. On the day before I was to pick it up, I was told via email that the children of some regular clients were interested in the ring and that the offer was $2,200.\n\nOnce again, I told the representative that I wanted to ring back. I picked it up the next day. \n\nI understand that the market may be flooded with second-hand diamonds and engagement rings (it?s a recession after all). I also understand the stigma that comes along with a second-hand engagement ring. That said, I was more than a bit dismayed with the fluctuating offers. I was also concerned that only when I wanted to take the ring off consignment was I suddenly being presented with any sort of proposal ? and a below-market one at that.\n\nH. Horwitz might be a wonderful place to buy your ring, especially if you are only paying $1,750 on something valued at $6,700, but based on my experience, I would not recommend consigning your jewelry there.\n

Business Response:

H. Horwitz is Chicago's oldest family-owned wholesale jeweler and estate/gold buyer, since 1899. Most items that we are presented with have are not come from our store. Pre-Paid prices are out of our control. On avg. an item sold back into the trade, can secure 1/3 of paid price, if overpaid can be less. Trade buys back in most cases well below build cost, lower than that paid. Condition, style, supply of an item in the market place, are basis of trade offers. In this case, the supply, style of the item, may have been the reason for the lower price. When we sell in our store, we base consigned price based on build cost, which is much higher than that which the trade would pay. We try our best to find retail clients, in general given enough time are very good at it. However, sometimes can't find retail client, and the trade will pay only so much. We work harder to find trade clients than most other estate buyers, and hope we can satisfy all clients in the process
.

I recently sold a ring through H. Horowitz via a consignment contract. The staff - Ruth, Phylis and Craig repeatedly failed to pay me after the ring sold. I called this company at least 20 times asking for them to pay me for the ring they sold and they simply continued to lie and tell me they were going to call me back and cut me a check soon. They did nothing, they just sat on the money and after 3-4 months of fighting and wasting countless phone calls on them, I finally got paid $200 short of what they owed me. They claim they paid in full. If you're going to interact with this company, have a good lawyer on hand.

Cons: unethical, unresponsive, disorganized

I bought my ring from Craig at H Horwitz ia few years back. I am from Dallas, Texas and whenever there has been a problem with the ring (very rarely), he has taken care of it with no questions asked. My wife and I can't thank him enough for the care he gives the ring. Everytime we get it back it looks prettier than when we sent it. Thaks, Craig.

Last weekend my fiancee and I went to H. Horwitz to choose an engagement ring and shop for wedding bands. We were greeted cordially and then allowed to browse the cases uninterrupted (read: no pressure) until we were ready to see a few choices first-hand. What ensued was a delightful experience lasting THREE HOURS! Never once did Phyllis, Craig or Lima appear frustrated with our attention to the most minute features of each ring. In fact, they encouraged us to explore each and every facet (no pun intended) of the selection process. They were exceptionally versed in the attributes of each stone that we perused as well.\r\n\r\nNeedless to say, we purchased the perfect ring--a beautiful, unique ring with an antique European cut stone. It is a lovely statement of our union.\r\n\r\nI am looking forward to going back in a few months to select our wedding bands!\r\n\r\nThanks to all that helped. And to those looking for a special shopping experience for a very special event--look no further.

I was very confused and undecided when it came to purchasing an engagement ring for my fiance and did not find any jeweler that provided me the guidance I needed. Mr. Craig Horwitz was first-class when it came to customer service and was patient with me as I went back and forth between what type of diamond and band I was going to ultimately purchase. \n\nMr. Horwitz works with any budget and is among the best in town when it comes to value for your buck. The custom made engagement ring he helped me create was outstanding! H Horwitz Company is undoubtedly the best jeweler in town!! I experienced several unwilling and uninterested jewelers that did not come close when it came to service or price. \n\nI highly recommend H Horwitz Company and my fiance does too after seeing the final product!

I purchased a ring from here not to long ago and their rings are so beautiful and unique. I'm very pleased with my purchase. The owner was friendly and took the time to help me find the perfect ring. This is by far the best jewelry store.

After going to visit H. Horwitz co. Jewelers firsthand after finding them online, it's no wonder why they've been around for 100+ years. A FANTASTIC setting on the professional level (not the mall!) of Water Tower Place in downtown Chicago provides a private, elegant setting, setting their showroom apart from any other noisy crowded jeweler planted in a mall, etc. The staff is more than accommodating, reminiscent of how business used to be before everything was chained and commercialized.\n\nI was in the market for a 2ct. diamond, and Horwitz provided me with the most aggressive pricing to date. They were able to locate diamonds to my specifications from around the world for me. Combine that with the custom process of design that they offer, friendly staff, and a shopping experience of true Chicago class and character, my choice was simple. I recommend this long standing icon of Chicago jewelry to the fullest of my ability.

I went in to speak with Craig Horwitz, not with the anticipation to buy, just look. Being young I wasn't too sure on what to look for in a ring but Craig helped me throughout the entire process. Most jewelers that (my now Fiance) and I went into had the attitude that they smelled ""fresh meat in the water"" when we walked in the store and jumped all over us trying to make a sale. Craig let me do all the talking and asked me questions when appropriate. I wanted a custom designed ring and he sketched out what I wanted. He let me customize the design, shape, quality, clarity, carrots and metal and then made a wax of what the ring would look like finished so that there would be nothing lost in translation. I was happy with the mold, and apparently Craig was too because he decided to make a duplicate of the design because he thinks I did a great job designing the ring. I waited about a week for the finished product to be completed and when it was I picked it up and brought it back to show all the girls at my work. I got a lot of compliments on what a great job that Craig did making the ring and the great job I did in designing it. Since I gave the ring to my girlfriend she has received many compliments on her ring and could not be happier.\r\n\r\nIf you are looking for an awesome ring at unbeatable prices I highly suggest you stop by and talk to Craig.

My fiance and I were very excited to be getting married and were looking for a jeweler who would custom design a wedding band to fit with our engagement band. We took the ring in and provided a detailed drawing with specific instructions for Craig Horwitz. His attitude was less than enthusiastic and he appeared apathetic, yet we were blinded by our excitement. After giving away the ring to have the mold made, and being told that it would take one week to make the mold, we were left waiting for close to a month (no phone call to explain the delay; no returned calls after repeated inquiries).\r\n\r\nThe ring came back with the instructions we gave being neglected: the special gem was not included, the shape was incorrect, and Craig made it seem as if we had not explained what we wanted (when it was stated on the order form). We were disappointed, but not dismayed. We continued with the project, only to be repeatedly let down with delays and many unreturned phone calls.\r\n\r\nAfter four months, we were fed up, but we gave the go ahead to make the ring as the wedding date drew closer. Although the metal work was better than their service, the over-all product was not what we had envisioned. We had specifically asked for it to be coated in Rhodium so as to look like white-gold for the wedding (as our budget prevented us from purchasing a brand new white-gold engagement ring), yet it came with no rhodium dip. The instructions were explicitly stated on the order envelope, but not followed. On top of this, the ring took so long to complete that my fiance was without a ring for all but a few weeks of our engagement. \r\n\r\nI would highly recommend taking your business to someone who cares about their job, to someone who is interested in tailoring a ring to a customer's desires, budget, and vision. Craig Horwitz did not exude any passion for his job, nor did he seem to remember anything we communicated to him (let alone his own notes). We recommend avoiding this jeweler.

I went in 6 weeks ago to have my wedding rings appraised. I was told that I would receive the appraisal within 2 weeks. After 4 weeks went by I called and left 2 messages and neither was returned. I called and spoke to someone and left a personal message. I spoke with the owner and she promised me last week that the appraisal would be in the mail and to me in a week.\r\n\r\nI have not received an appraisal though I paid for it. I am currently trying to get the charges removed from my credit card.

I considered buying on the internet, but found a need to see many diamonds at the same time. Horwitz pricing is eqaul or better than internet and I weas able to see many diamonds at the same time. Bought a 1.29 round and very happy with the custom mounting as well. G. Smyth, Chicago
