This gorgeous property is frozen in time. The tour was entertaining and informative and the staff was friendly and receptive to questions. In addition to the mansion itself, and the beautiful furnishings, there is a big room showcasing various ladies' fashions over the last 75 years or so. They will rent the house out for private parties which is a really cool idea.

You can learn about Evanston and it's history and hang out in a mansion. Sounds cool huh? Learn about the familes who used to live here and other historical figures. The first family was the Shepards who lived here about 10 yrs. from 1894 when the house was built until 1904. From 1904 the Dawes family lived here until 1957. Charles Dawes went on to become VIce President of the USA. I went on a private tour. They first showed me a 15 min video about Evanston. Then the tour guide took me thru every room on the first and second floor and told me as much as she could about each room. On the second floor there is a room dedicated to Civil War history. Very interesting indeed. Suggested donation is $5.

PROS: Beautiful surroundings near a lakefront
