Such an adorable, inviting little bakery! I come all the way from Hinsdale just to eat here! My children love that you can sit at the counter and watch them make the cupcakes! They also have many other sweet treats for people who aren't cupcake lovers. I personally love the traditional buttercream frosting. They also offer decorating classes for children on Saturday mornings. This place has always been a favorite, and I will continue to come here for years to come! Huge fan!
My favorite bakery for slices of cake (Sweet Memories in Highland Park) closed recently, and I had read that it was sort of a knock-off of Sweet Mandy Bs. So, I called Sweet Mandy Bs and was told that they usually have a yellow cake and a chocolate cake that they sell by the slice every day. So, I went on about 5 Saturdays, thinking that they would have a slice of yellow cake, and they did only once and they usually had just a few pieces of chocolate cake left. The slice that I did have was good, if they had it all the time I would go more often even though the bakery is out of my way and expensive. They always have cupcakes, which they say are made of the same batter as the cake, but of course it is not the same as having a slice of layer cake. They seem to experiment with their cakes some; around Halloween they had made this yellow cake with gummi worms cooked into it that seemed pretty unappetizing.
They seem fairly generous. Once I ordered a few cupcakes and they gave me an extra one, which was nice. Once a sales woman there offered to give me extra of something (because I had complained about them not having yellow cake slices very often) and I said, "You don't have to do that," and you know, she didn't . . .. I don't go there any more because they are too far out of my way and they too rarely have something that I want and I did try a few different things. At any rate, If you are looking for a cupcake or flourless chocolate cake, this may be the place because they always have plenty of those and they are decent. If a good slice of cake is what you're looking for, this may not be the place.
Good location in a cozy neighborhood. There is ample seating through the store/cafe to eat whatever treat you have purchased - they range from milkshakes to hot cocoa to rice krispie treats. It it like going to your grandmother's house and having all of her goodies for sale.
While most of the desserts were quite fresh, I've sampled a few old/hard cookies during my visit. Since then, I just order more popular items and haven't had a problem with freshness.
I LOVE this place! Their cupcakes are the best I have every tasted in the city. They're fluffy and sweet and melt in your mouth good. Their other treats are also very tasty, including cookies, brownies, cakes, and rice krispie treats.
The shop is very bright, whimsical and the prices are right !
This is a kid friendly and casual restaurant for dessert only. Their whoopie pies, brownies, and cupcakes are wonderful.
You will also love the ice cream. They are open later than most pastry shops. Early in the morning you can get freshly brewed coffee, muffins and fresh fruit .
I have recently purchased a graduation and birthday cake and they were absolutely heavenly. I have tried there cupcakes as well and they are delicious, especially the coconut topping. In the past I have purchase my bakery from Whole Foods and while I do enjoy their fruit tarts, they will not have the rest of my business.
Sweet Mandy B's is a quaint little place with a great deal of business. I live in Hyde Park and it is worth the ride to Lincoln Park.
It's good. Cupcakes are decent. I pefer Molly's or Bleeding Heart bakery for their creativity though
It makes me really sad to give Sweet Mandy B's only two stars, because I've heard such great things. I was so excited to try the whoopie pie and caramel pecan clusters for the first time.
However, I'll admit that I was totally underwhelmed by the whoopie pie, it was just far too sweet for me. But to use a cliche breakup line: Dear whoopie pie, I think it's me, not you.
The whoopie pie consisted of two chocolate cakes with a ton of frosting sandwiched in between and topped with more chocolate frosting and colorful sprinkles. It reminded me of the bakery section at Jewel and I found the frosting to be too sickly sweet and the chocolate cake was a little on the dry side. I finished the entire thing, determined as I was to give it a fair shot, and I kept thinking that maybe I would start to like it better, that it would grow on me.
The pecan clusters were yummier, still insanely sweet, but in a smaller dose, so it was more bearable.
Sweet Mandy B's is a very classically American bakery, and it does what it does well. That is to say, it's heavy on the sugar, but for Americans who like twinkies and Betty Crocker brownies, I can see why it's heaven. I will venture to guess that I might have liked the whoopie pie a little better had it been refrigerated first.
Cons: Too sweet for me
Warm, welcoming bakery with glass counters full of sweets. We always end up buying 3 or 4 different things when we came in for 1 in particular.
Pros: Delicious frosting
Cons: It's not good for you
Hands down best vanilla cupcakes anywhere in Chi town or all of U.S. for that matter. Pies are fantastic. Service is friendly and fast. I have hooked several of my friends on the tasty treats. Can't help but be in a a good mood while I'm there. Basically the best goodies ever!!!!
Pros: great atmosphere
Cons: tiny inside, but you pay a small price for perfection
I met some friends at Sweet Mandy B's for dessert. The location is good and parking was easy. After reading the reviews online I was excited to try it! I was completely under-whelmed. The inside was dingy and dumpy....needs a couple fresh coats of paint. The ambiance makes me wonder the level of cleanliness in the back. There was dried chocolate frosting smeared on our table and the back of the chairs felt crusty. On the upside, the dessert and coffee were good. Instead, I would recommend Bittersweet on Belmont. Much better dessert and decor!
Pros: Good dessert and coffee
Cons: Dingy ambiance
Sweet Mandy B's is such a wonderful place, the service is AMAZING and all the people are so friendly and nice, I never have to wait and the food is so good. EVERYONE SHOULD GO TO SWEET MANDY B'S!!!!!
Omg this place was unreal. everything was awesome and the food was great. but mandy was a little slow in the service!!!
Pros: Mandy is cool
Cons: She is not clean
This place always perks me up! After a sub-par birthday dinning experience, we came here for the dessert. Once you step in this place, you feel like a kid again. This has the traditional bakery ambiance and charm. Pastel walls and glass cases full of indulgent treats. Personally I think the cookies are far better than the cupcakes, especially the molasses iced cookie...soft, moist and heavenly!
Pros: awesome desserts
Cons: can get crowded and they can run out of the best items
Customer service is really poor. Twice I called to order a cake and noone ever called me back. Very disappointing. I wound up going to Bitter Sweet and I coudn't have been more pleased with their service and their delicious cake. In my opinion, Sweet Mandy B's is overrated.
There were 2 HAIRS on my containers. The bathroom was a disgusting mess at 12 in the afternoon, on a Saturday, and the place overall was not clean. The service was rude and terrible. The Chocolate Flourless cake was INCREDIBLY SALTY, it was evident it was a screw up. Chocolate is not to be salty. It was so salty it made your mouth pucker. GROSS. Everything in that place was disgusting and completely overrated. I am an avid baker myself of old-fashioned desserts, and this by far is not it. Would never go back
Twice now I have had the yellow cake with lemon curd and buttercream frosting and it's truly amazing. People at both parties could not stop talking about it. DO NOT pass up Sweet Mandy B's when ordering your next special occasion cake.
Pros: Charming little bakery
Being a choc-a-holic finding this jem was like the light shining down from above and a choir singing "ahhhh". That's how much I love this place. By far the classic brownie is the best thing I have tasted (and I have tried almost everything), a close second is the peanut butter blonde brownie, oh my goodness. I would not, and it pains me to say this, reccomend the chocolate chip cookie. It is really the only down side I can think of. For whatever reason they over-bake the cookie. Everytime. Perhaps that is because of I am of the school, the mushier the better, but a crunchy cookie from a fresh bakery? I expected more! But the decor is absolutely adorable and makes me happy just to be inside for a snack whenever I can. I even ordered and bought my own birthday cake here (clearly I have an addiction). Other great items to try: classic cupcake, red velvet cupcake, and dirt cake (pudding?). If you ever want a sweet treat find your way here, one way or another. It is pretty much always busy here, whether its noon on a sat or 6pm on a tuesday, so expect to wait a little - the line moves very quickly though.
Pros: best. brownie. ever.
Cons: chocolate chip cookie
Sweet Mandy B's is definitely a favorite of mine! The cupcakes are homemade and melt in your mouth. I haven't tasted any other item from here but they all look sooo good! A ton of variety with flavors and types of goodies. Everything from whoopie-pies to red velvet cupcakes. Cute set up too! My only problem is that I too had some issues with the service. The workers seemed a bit rude and unthoughtful, definitely not what you would expect from a cheery bakery. I ordered a latte and the employee seemed too busy to have it done in a timely fashion; my friend was finished with her cupcake before I returned to the table. I think the employees should get an attitude adjustment because they are tarnishing the reputation of a fine bakery.
Pros: The cupcakes, variety of goodies.
Cons: The employees' attitudes towards thier customers.
Ordered 200 cupcakes of 4 flavors and had monograms on 100 of them and white non-pariels on the others. It was fantastic! We used the caterer's cupcake stand and that was our cake. Everyone still raves about them - we had the chocolate (with white frosting), yellow (with chocolate frosting), red velvet and orange dreamcicle (white frosting). I highly recommend this.......was 1/2 the cost of regular wedding cakes and so much more memorable!
Pros: Great great great desserts!
Cons: Don't deliver - had to get friends to pick up and deliver
My mom was in town from Indiana and I wanted her to experience great cupcakes and pastries at Sweet Mandy B's. We got there and the people behind the counter didn't know what they were doing and were very unpleasant. I was embarrassed for the staff. I understand that people have bad days, but don't take out your frustrations on customers. My mom placed quite a large order--cupcakes, halloween cookies, etc. We got home, and half the order wasn't in the bag. I just don't get it. I have been there in the past, and the service has always been poor. So I thought I would give them another chance. But now, I don't think I plan on going there anytime soon. If someone is going to work in a bakery, be personable and make the experience deliciously unforgettable, not disappointing.
Pros: Delicous cupcakes!!
Cons: Poor service!
I used to be a huge fan of Sweet Mandy B's, especially for their confetti cookie! It's a soft yummy sugar cookie with confetti sprinkles on top. However, I have noticed lately that the staff seems rushed and are often rude. Also, they don't seem to take orders well either. I ordered 2 birthday cakes in July, which were quit expensive totalling almost $60 for both. When we cut into the cakes they were both WRONG! One was supposed to be white cake with white frosting with strawberry filling and it was yellow cake with white frosting and NO strawberries (I even paid extra for the strawberries). The second cake was supposed to be chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and it was YELLOW cake with chocolate frosting! I mean come on! Did they only have yellow cake left?! The yellow cake was aweful. I've yet to go back and haven't even bothered telling them that the order was completely wrong.
Pros: Good cookies
Cons: Bad Service
You absolutely have to have the Peanut Butter and Jelly Cake!! I prefer it with white cake but if you like chocolate cake I'm sure that would be delicious just the same. It is hands down the best cake I've ever had and all my friends and family agree with me! I showcased this cake at my b-day party and it was a winner with everyone who had some. They all agreed it was the best cake they've ever had.
If you don't need a huge cake, they even make PB&J cupcakes! Those are equally as good. Though, since they don't make them all the time, and they are so popular, when they do make them, you better go early because they go very fast!
Definitely my favorite bakery in Chicago hands down!
Pros: Cupcakes, Cakes
Cupcakes are VERY good, and reasonably priced. Staff was friendly I plan on visiting again and trying other cupcake flavors and frostings! :)
My friend and I (who are from Milwaukee) traveled to Chicago for her birthday yesterday. She would have loved to go to NYC's Magnolia bakery (featured on S*x and the City) for her birthday cupcake, but Chicago is where we were able to celebrate. And we don't do the whole Michigan Avenue thing in Chicago, we like exploring the lesser known areas (so much character, variety and elclectic boutiques).
I found Sweet Mandy B's on Citysearch the night before and we went there based on a reviewer's comparison of Sweet Mandy B's to Magnolia in NYC. We used public transportation to get there (Brown line to Armitage). We had trouble finding the bakery once we stepped off the El because we didn't know our directionals. Quite some time later after stopping a few times to get directions we found the bakery. It was FANTASTIC!
The staff was courteous, they were mostly busy preparing yummy goodies, but when we talked to them they were wonderfully warm and friendly. The cupcake was incredible (we thought about taking a bunch of cupcakes home to Milwaukee but decided against toting the precious cargo around for the rest of the day on the buses, Els and the Amtrak ride home), the ambiance was too cute, and the offerings were plentiful. There were many choices at Sweet Mandy B's that you just don't find in most bakeries. I chose to take a Smore in my purse to nosh on the train ride back to Miwaukee. I don't know how they made a Smore so transportable but it held up well in my purse the rest of the day and was a sweet end to a fun day.
You CANNOT skip Sweet Mandy B's!
Pros: Cupcakes! To die for!
Cons: I wish they shipped to Milwaukee!
This is a great little spot to have in the neighborhood for when you need a sweet little treat. Their breakfast items such as scones, muffins and coffee cakes are excellent though be warned it you don't get there bright and early on a weekend morning you will be out of luck. You would think they would bake more so they wouldn't run out by 9 am. The cupcakes are okay and I have found that the white is much better than the chocolate. The chocolate tends to be dry. They have a decent cookie called the Ranger Cookie filled with all sorts of yummy things. We did have an excellent Coconut Creme Cake for my b'day though it was a tad too sweet for my taste it was good nonetheless and was devoured in days. Keep in mind this isn't a fancy, French style bakery. This is a made like Mom use to make style bakery - more cute than pretty - and sometimes like mom they have an off day too. I think they are trying to fashion themselves like Magnolia Bakery in Manhattan - which if you have been there you will know that no one does it quite like Magnolia does!
Pros: Good Homemade Desserts
Cons: They run out too quickly, Slow service
Finally stopped into Mandy B's....CUTE! Everyone was super nice and helpful. I had a Vanilla Steamer that was perfectly sweet and very hot! AND, I got a Halloween cookie and 2 cherry macaroons for my husband & I. The cookies was a basic sugar cookie - good. The macaroons were a different story...YUMMY!!!! They were crunchy on the outside and really moist on the inside and the cherries were huge! TOO MUCH - I was in heaven for a couple of seconds!
Pros: Great pastry selection!
Cons: No soups or munchies that weren't sweet.
I visited Sweet Mandy B's twice. The first visit was just O.K. The taste is not consisitent, and customer service is not a priority. However, the second visit really concerned me. All of the baked goods on the counter were uncovered and flys were all over the place even landing on a cake one of the staff members was decoration. And to top it all off one of the cashiers with an open scab sore on his finger was touching money and serving the baked goods. I called to share my concerns with a manager and went back in that night and nothing changed. I guess they don't care about sanitation.
Pros: Good yellow cupcakes and birthday cakes
Cons: Poor sanitation and customer service
My first experience at Sweet Mandy B's was picking up a birthday cake for my sister, and the service was amazing, they were able to provide a cake for me with exactly what I wanted immediately, and it was a great cake, very moist, frosting was rich, it just really worked! Thus after having such a great first time, I treat myself every now and then to either a Velvet cupcake (by the way far surpasses Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes) or their very fun confetti cookies that are so doughey and delicious!
I was really looking forward to trying this bakery. I was really disppointed. I tried two of the samples, I should have used those as examples. I had the chocolate chip cookie cream sandwich. My hands were greasy after holding it. The cookies did taste like my moms, maybe tollhouse recipe or gold medal flour, I don't know. I also got a slice of cheesecake to go. It was stuffed into a plastic to go container, not even resembling a slice anymore. The topping was some kind of strawberry jelly. Maybe little kids like that. The crust on the cheese mush was wet. It was very disappointing. Oddly enough, I didn't have a problem with parking.
Cons: Use of shortening, Greasy, Packaging
The desserts are really exceptional and the ambience is warm and inviting. If you think you can get out of the store without purchasing more delicious sweets than those which you intended...think again...it's that good.
My first experience w/Sweet Mandy B's was ordering a lemon cake for a baby shower at work. It was delicious! The lemon curd had just the right amount of tartness, the cake was moist and the vanilla butter cream was yummy. And to top it off it was a cute cake. I will definitely will be coming back. I also brought a brownie which was unforuntalely disappointing. I like moist, fudgy brownies and this was not it. Despite this, I would definitely come back and get more cake!
Pros: Lemon Cake, Service
We got the banana chocolate chip layer cake with buttercream frosting. I haven't stopped dreaming about it ever since. It was absolutly amazing. So moist I don't think it had a crumb. We also ordered a carmel apple tart like thing. It was also very amazing. Everything is super rich and very sugary. This is a place I know that I will never be let down. The atmosphere is totally fun too. Would make a great date place.
Pros: excellent taste, quality, fun
Cons: parking, parking, parking
I moved to Chicago from NYC and was in major need of a local cupcake fix to fill the void of Magnolia bakery (As seen on S&TC). Sweet Mandy B's delivered! In addition to the cupcakes being phenomenal! Their cookies and other desserts are delicious as well. Not to mention that the place is adorable and has great late night hours! I can't say enough about this place. Get there, select your favorite cupcake combination from the old fashioned display case and I promise you will not be disappointed!
Pros: CUPCAKES, Adorable space, Late hours
This place is awesome. The products are delicious. Try the whoopie pies and anyone of the different cookies. Quality is superb and so is variety. Be careful of local students trying to turn it into a pretentious cafe/hangout.
Pros: whoopie pies, brownies, quality
This cute little bakeries cupcakes pack a BIG punch on flavor and satisfaction. They are truely the best cupcakes i have ever had by far. THey are moist and colorful. The frosting i believe is thier signature because it tastes home made. Everything in this bakery was amazing as a matter of fact...the triple chocolate cake, banana cream pie, macroons...etc. THey also do cakes which i like to think of as a giant cupcake.. I love this place and you will NOT be dissapointed.
I love, love, love this place! It's a great place to satisfy your sweet tooth. I just love the cupcakes - so colorful and tasty. The banana pudding and chocolate pudding are so rich and yummy.
Pros: Great Sweets, Friendly Staff
Cons: , Gets Crowded
Wonderful desserts. We've tried cakes, cookies, cupcakes and whoopie pies and they've all been excellent. The flourless chocolate cake, served slightly warm, is incredible.
Have been here two times in the past month. Desserts have been excellent both times. Cupcakes are very good. So are the brownies. When available, don't miss out on the S'mores. They are out of this world.
If you see a line, don't let it discourage you from the sweets. I have been working my way through each and every treat and so far, so very good. The S'more brownies and the chocolate cake are my favorites so far.
Pros: always fresh, good selection, fairly inexpensive
Cons: service is slow, crowded evenings
This place is a treasure! Everything is fabulous.
Chocolate craving? Whoopie Pie is the answer! Great fruit desserts, best plum pie ever!!!
Hope they can make it in a tough neighborhood for small operations.
Pros: whoopie pie, fruit pies, ice cream
simply put, Sweet Mandy B's is the best dessert place you could ever hope for... I went there with a group of friends after dinner (they're open late, which is awesome for late nite cravings) and everything we got tasted fantastic. The decor makes you feel right at home too.... If Martha Stewart opened a dessert place, it would look like Sweet Mandy B's (but the servers are MUCH nicer!) Try it once and you'll get hooked. mmmmmmm.
Cons: you'll want everythin
