Back when this restaurant first open it was the best burger in town. Now not so much. The quality of the burger has changed in a not so good way. It does not taste fresh anymore. The last several visit it was inedible in a really bad way.

A chef friend in Chicago suggested I go to Boston Blackies for a good burger. On one visit in the past I was out-voted and had to go elsewhere, but this last visit I was on my own. The place seems like a nice, friendly bar (I don't drink), not too dark, not too loud. I was really looking forward to a burger. The let-down was in the bun. What I got was a store-bought, run-of-the-mill, light, tasteless, limp. I once worked in a restaurant where we baked our own buns, and they really make a difference in the burger experience. Maybe I should have asked for the Kaiser roll, but the wait staff was not good about offering options, and weren't that attentive anyway. The atmosphere was pleasant enough, but as for the food, there are national chains that offer a better experience.

One of my favorite spots in chicago for lunch or a casual dinner. Blackies has a real old time chicago club feel. great menu with killer side dishes, The Coleslaw and onion rings are the best.

I will admit, I used to love Boston Blackie's. A few years ago, I might have posted one of those great reviews you'll see here. That all changed for me this past weekend.

Since my last visit to BBs, I have developed a severe food allergy (but a very manageable one with slight recipe alterations). So when I eat out, I always have to ask about the ingredients, just to make sure I can eat an item as-is. Everyone has always been accommodating, except the waitress at Boston Blackie's. She refused to check for me, and after I pressed her about it, she walked away, completely annoyed that I had asked her to do any work. When she returned, she told me there was "no way to tell, and the chef doesn't know" and that I should "just order a salad."

My party and I decided to leave, but I felt incredibly embarrassed that we had to go because of me. I have never, ever, ever had a waitress refuse to even ASK about the ingredients in the food. From fast food to fancy, everyone has always been nice about it, except Boston Blackie's.

So I guess bottom line, Boston Blackie's will cook you a decent burger and bring it to you fast, but you'd better not ask any questions about the menu, because even the chefs don't know what is in their food.

I have a note in to their management and will let you all know if they respond.

Pros: food comes quickly

Cons: you'd better be able to order off the menu, no questions asked

Eh - I wasn't amazed by the food, it's not the best but it hits the spot for a random burger craving. The service is friendly, but you really have to ask for your food to be out fast otherwise they'll take their time with it. I'd go back, just not on the night that a movie opens at the AMC around the corner - it's way too crowded.

Ah, Boston Blackies. I haven't been there in years, but it all came back to me in a flood of memories of some of the best basic burgers I've had.

Except for the smoke. Chicago bars and restaurants are no -- thank goodness -- smokefree, meaning you can enjoy the flavors even more without ending the evening with the smell of ashtray on your clothes.

So let's talk burgers: Boston Blackies had great burgers. They come in a half-pound patty ("over half pound" according to the menu, and I'm not going to quibble) and for an unadorned burger they're hard to beat. The well-formed patties came hot off the grill with melted cheddar (American, Swiss and blue also available) on top, with just the right amount of salt and a touch of ground pepper to make them tasty and absolutely mouthwatering.

The menu at Boston Blackies says, "The main ingredient in cooking is love," and while I can't speak for the cook, I can say that I love places where the waitress calls me "hon." I got great service, although the waitress was so quick I wasn't ever able to catch her name. She was a sweetheart, though.

What else do you need to know. The burgers come open faced on either sesame bun or kaiser roll, and are severed with the obligatory (flavorless) tomato slice, (uninteresting) lettuce leaf and (slightly better than average) dill pickle spear. And, of course, they're always served with a scoop of
outrageously delicious Carson's cole slaw," which is indeed a great complement to the burger.

But the burger really sells it. If you're in Chicago take a one-block walk off of Michigan Avenue, just east of Nordstrom's (you'll have to walk down the stairs off the street to lower Grand) and enjoy one of the best basic burgers you'll find in Chicago.

Between Navy Pier and Michigan Ave, this tiny joint serves MONSTER burgers that make your mouth water just thinking about it. My Blackie-Burger comes out on a plate that had a tomato slice about as thick as a burger patty at some other "so-called" hamburger joints. They also serve it with a cup of cole slaw that was delicious - and I normally despise cole slaw. The buffalo wings were great. Just a great experience.

If you want a true review, here you go?Overpriced burgers in a bar atmosphere. Food is average at most and the service is not worth mentioning. This place is just too old fashioned without any character. Not sure if this place wants to be more of a bar (projection TV) or a nicer restaurant (Can?t wear baseball caps)...Don't ask the owners, they won't know either... Too many nicer restaurants in Chicago to waste your time at this depressing burger joint.

This neighborhood styled bar and restaurant is unique in that most of the sounding establishments are significantly more upscaled and trendy. The food here is simple but very well prepared. The grilled Pork Chops rule. They are a great value and are nicely complimented with the house BBQ sauce and side of their wonderful coleslaw. Another house favorite are the potato skins. These are truely loaded and are dangerous for anyone over the age of thirty, but they really are scrumptous.

I have always heard great things about Boston Blackies, but I didn't realize how great this place was until last Friday. I met a friend after work for a quick dinner before we went to a movie. The location is perfect because you are only two blocks from the movie theater on illinois and a block away from the shops on michigan ave. The burger was delicious, cooked exactly the way wanted it. I opted to get a side salad instead of the fries and the salad dressing was wonderful. My friend got a side of the dressing to dip her burger in. I will definitely be back for another burger!

This is an email I sent to Boston Blackies. I never received a resposne.

Chris,

Here is a little feedback on our experience at your Streeterville location last night.

We stopped into your restaurant last night at 9:30 pm on 12/5/06. As soon as we entered there was a strong smell of cigarettes in the bar area. We asked if there was a no smoking area. Our greeter said the back was no smoking and had its own ventilation system. We were told to sit anywhere we wanted. While removing our coats a man told us we could not sit in this section. We asked why and he said he was closing this section. We mentioned that the smoke was uncomfortably strong up front. He just insisted that we not sit in the section. I looked at the people in the section and 2 tables had waiters that were sitting in this section. Once again I mentioned that I did not feel comfortable sitting in a section that was so smokey. I said that we would have to choose another restaurant as opposed to eating in the bar. He said ok leave.

We realize that this gentleman wanted to close the section but forcing customers to eat in a smoking section when there is a no smoking section is wrong. Of all the places we could have gone in the downtown area we chose Boston Blackies. This turned out to be a bad decision. We were forced to go back out into single digit weather and walk to another location.

I just thought you should know where you restaurant performed poorly.

I'm a frequent traveler, and seek out great meals, at whatever cost. The burgers here are outstanding - and who would've thought that we could order it from the hotel (we were staying at the Conrad Hilton, around the corner), walk down and pick it up immediately after hanging up the phone - it was ready when we arrived. I wish we'd eaten it in-house because the place is so inviting - dark woods, almost appears as if it'd be an expensive steakhouse. But the bleu cheese and the bacon, on that juicy burger. Hands down the best burger I've had in all my years (and I was with someone who's been in upscale food & beverage for almost all of his life - he recommended it). Yes, you can go to TRU or wherever, but if you are really in the mood for a burger, try this place, especially if you think you've already had the best burger in the world.

Pros: They offer takeout - excellent prices, and SO fast

You know something...it amazes me that 90% of the reviews here are SO great...but yet there are always a FEW picky bodies that have to whine and moan. I just don't get it? This is a FANTASTIC and FUN atmosphere that brings you in for the food and keeps you coming back. Of course it is full...the food is THAT good. It is NOT the Four Seasons...it's not intended to be. If you want a quiet peaceful dinner, go home and eat. This is hands down the best! Live it...eat it...LOVE IT!. WINNER.

If you enjoy sipping on the juice extracted from each bite of a hamburger then this is the place for you. Normally ranked 2nd best in Chicago by CitySearch, this joint ranks number 1 by anyone who knows a real burger. These buns full of joy are large, juicy and melt in your mouth. The french fries are a great side but the onion rings are better. And even though the rings are large enough to share we recommend hoarding them all for yourself.

Blackie's doesn't look like much on the outside, but on the inside it looks like a place that Bogart would have haunted in the 40s. Great ambience & super-fast service. The hostess is a little haggard, but probably because there's such fast turnover! The waitresses are sweet & to-the-point. And the burgers..oh the burgers. Just juicy enough, just the right size, and cooked just right. Fantastic onion rings! I keep meaning to try the Garbage Salad but every time I go I can't pass up the burgers! And so inexpensive!

I read some good reviews but ended up being disappointed. The so-called "best burger" around was average to below average. I have had better burgers at small town diners that have gone out of business. The bun was tasty and the meat seemed quality, but the tast was average and the toppings were bland.

The atmosphere is nice, with a retro movie-themed lounge feel. It's nothing special, but nice. Overall, I found the price of the food did not match the quality, and I wish I would have spent my time at a better restaurant for lunch on my last day in Chicago. You can get burgers like this at any diner anywhere. Last note: the fries weren't very good (tasted like something you'd buy & bake from a frozen section at your local grocery store)

I profess that a Blackie's Burger is the most delectable and delicious burger that will ever enter your mouth. There is an eruption of flavorful juices as your teeth freely sink through the fresh bun and into the most majestic piece of beef that has ever been consumed. It's like your mouth wins the lottery every time you walk in the doors. From the Cole Slaw that is only rivaled by Grandmother's to the phenomenal french fries you'll enjoy every morsel of food that is served. The atmosphere is great and the service is more than adequate. It is well worth the extra dollar or two.

its a pretty average burger. not bad, but not any different from the kind burger you can get at most bars. given the amount of hype the place has gotten it was pretty disappointing to actually eat there. i thought nearby bandera served up a better burger though its probably twice the price. blackies is affordable for the area, and the service was reasonably quick, so its got that going for it.

I was a little hesitant about going here, but the hotel where we were staying recommended it.......We arrived, quickly seated and ordered quickly.....food came quickly and was the best meal i had in the USA, juicy, favourful, and the coleslaw was to die for!! I found the staff to be very friendly.....i only spent 3 days in Chicago but we decided to go back to Blackies a second time because of the quality of food and service! the second time we went, we were greated by a friendly WAVE, from our last waiter, and it was nice to be actually recognised even tho we were in another country....Im heading back to the sates in a couple of months and cant wait to hit the resturant/bar again......and to top it all off...the prices are very very affordable!

After reading the reviews i decided to try it out. Took a cab there, walked in, and instantly got seated (surprising since it IS Black Sox @ World Series tonight, home game). The game was protected on the back wall in 15 x 15 feet of glory. My food came out literally 3 minutes after I ordered... so did the peoples next to me and across from me (who all ordered at the same time i did).

Very friendly staff, VERY VERY good hamburger. The fries were great as well.

The previous comments where people said it is 'tight' and people are 'packed like sardeans' are false. There is plenty of breathing room. The only part of the restaraunt that is smoking is the very front (near the door), and the rest is non-smoking, so there isnt a bad smelling environment.

I can see how Blackies is burned into the memory of downtown denizens. It is a dingy little hangout off the beaten path, and that has a lot of charm for many people. But they do not serve the best burger in Chicago. I would vote for their slaw over their burger. My burgers have been over-greasy and under-flavorful. I ask for rare! they bring me medium. While I would rather come to Blackies than most restaurants in that price range downtown, it is no match for other hangouts in town.

This restaurant has a half decent hamburger. However, most are just ground beef. What makes the burger is the bun and the fixens.

There is not attention to either in this rest. Also, the salad and other food in this rest. is lousy

There is not attention to either in this rest. Also, the salad and other food in this rest. is lousy

Was introduced to this little place about 15 years ago while at a convention. Been back many times since whenever in town. Great food, drinks, and atmosphere at a very reasonable price. Try the garbage salad, too. It's first-rate.

This HAS TO BE the most incredible burger that has ever touched my mouth. I literally travel from Kalamazoo, MI at least once a month because of the craving. And if you like Blue Cheese... nothing like the Blackie's Blue Burger!!!!

I was very unpleased with the burger quality...it doesn't look fresh, looks like a scarey frozen burger that's just tasteless and has an awful consistency. Go to Corcorans on Lincoln for a damn good burger....this place sucks to put it lightly.

I have just recently discovered
Blackie's.
I have been there several times now.
They have the best burgers in town in my opinion and their onion rings, well, they are just awesome!!
I recommend Blackie's to everyone that comes in from out of town and anyone who lives here that has never been there before.

I visited Boston Blackie's during the middle of the afternoon, no crowds. I was seated immediately and waited upon right away. My food came in a timely manner, just as ordered. The Boston Blackie Burger was perfectly cooked with lots of sweet grilled onions and crisp bacon. I added a little mustard and ketchup for my perfect burger. Whenever I want a burger, Boston Blackie's is the place for me.

With a price range of around five dollars a burger, fries for an additional dollar fifty and served in less than five minutes from which you ordered...AND getting the complete value with a quarter pound of burger, with your choice of four different cheeses or no cheese, bacon or no bacon, with or without grilled onions-the only added ingredient missing is sauteed mushrooms! Anyone who visits Chicago should definitely stop and have the best burger in the nation!

I would have to say that this is the Best Burger I have had since moving to Chicago!!! They are true to their word when they say a 1/2 pound. If you are a light weight you can split one and get a big order of onion rings to top off the meal. You can't find a better meal for the money!! A++++++

The service at the Deerfield location was good but the food wasn't. The chef thought that sprinkling paprika on the grilled onions which graced by Boston Blackie's Burger was a good thing. Surprise! it didn't taste good.

Also, some of the onion rings that I ordered were burnt and had to be sent back.
