Dr. Barkley is a very good vet - he clearly knows his stuff and he clearly cares about the animals. We've always received good care for our cats.

What he doesn't seem to be is a people person. He may not be super comforting and he's not going to be super patient with you if you don't follow his directions. He has some "smart-ass" moments (as seen in the "I'm not a bank" in another review) and will probably tell you what he thinks about something, maybe bluntly.

Fortunately for me, that's a very common personality type in my line of work, so I'm comfortable with him. If you're a sensitive, "high-touch" person, he may not be for you.

That doesn't mean he isn't a nice, compassionate man - he's just lacking in "high-touch" people skills. When our first cat died he seemed personally upset, and he was very good to us.

I don't really want someone who's going to cry with me and hold my hand. I want someone who knows everything there is to know about cats. He seems like he does.

This vet is a miserable man who obviously has some big problems - One of them, not being able to pay for his well decorated cat hospital because no one will go to him. He was very rough with our sweet, well behaved cat and didn't seem to care about the cat or us. He was very condescending to my questions and never said hello or thank you to us after we spent hundreds$ with him. - His staff is excellent, caring and kind, Dr. Barklay an uncaring, cruel man - who isn't much of a vet. I will NEVER recommend him, as a matter of fact, I will advise people to STAY AWAY from THE CAT HOSPITAL in WESTMONT! Dr. Barklay...(what a name for a cat Dr.)

Dr. William Barclay is a 5 star veterinarian.

Some of the negative reviews I am reading here on the internet at Yahoo, Insider Pages and on Yelp I find hard to believe and consider the comments a slanderous attempt to discredit an excellent doctor. Several appear to be written by the same person under an anon name. In today's litigious society, comments should be considered very carefully before they are written. Once you put something on the internet, it is there forever and you can't take it back.

I just can't see Dr. Barclay sending any cat home bleeding or refusing to euthanize a cat because it wasn't humane. It is the owner's decision to put a cat down, not the doctor's decision. Papers must be signed by the owner authorizing the vet to euthanize the pet. If the owner of the cat wanted her kitten euthanized, Dr. Barclay would not refuse the request. I know that for a fact because we have discussed this same situation regarding one of my cats.

The woman who just walked in with her cat without an appointment has no right to be outraged. What gives her the right to think she could just walk into the clinic without an appointment and have her cat treated immediately despite the fact that the doctor was in the middle of a serious surgical procedure on another cat. Veterinary hospitals are not like an emergency room at a people hospital. You need an appointment.

Dr. Barclay has taken my cats every single time on an emergency basis, but YOU HAVE TO CALL FIRST.

As long as I have had cats, I have taken them strictly to cat only hospitals. My dogs are taken to another vet and my birds are seen at Midwest Bird and Exotic. I don't play vet roulette with my beloved animals.

I started out at Abbeywood Cat Clinic in Naperville where my cats received exceptional care, but I transferred my business over to the Cat Hospital which was closer to my home. I have been a client of these hospitals for nearly 15 years and my daughter also takes her cats to this veterinary clinic.

Abbeywood is run by Dr. Sandra Barclay DVM and The Cat Hospital is run by Dr. William Barclay DVM.

I will admit that there is a difference in the handling and bedside manner of the staff at the two hospitals. Abbeywood is a female only hospital and as women, they are very gentle with cats; especially Dr. McIrnerey. Depending on the day and what is going on at the time, Dr. William Barclay is more abrupt, has less patience and sometimes has a poor bedside manner. The women who assist him however are very friendly and gentle with the animals. I have known these women for years and not one of them has ever been unpleasant.

For those of you who are sensitive to a particular personality, you have to understand the man. He becomes frazzled easily, has little patience for clients who don't understand what he is trying to tell you about your pet or follow his instructions. His type of personality is often interpreted as insensitive or rude. He is not as gentle with cats as we would like him to be. Please overlook that when you are looking for superior care for your cat. I like him very much because he is an excellent and exceptional doctor.

I have had multiple cats over the years -- two had cancer, one had heart disease, the others have other problems such as feline herpes (my feral rescue cats), chronic UTIs, even heartworm and he has always given them 100% excellent care. He can look at the cat, hear the symptoms and diagnose a problem correctly.

He has saved the life of several of my cats. He has offered to keep my cats overnight for observation for various problems, he has offered to perform surgery on a holiday weekend for one of my cats in the event he could not clear up the cat's intestinal blockage. He tried to prolong and improve the quality of life for one of my cats with lymphoma cancer by discussing the pros and cons of chemotherapy. Dr. Barclay has made sound decisions when it has come to treatment for my cats.

I highly recommend this cat hospital based upon the excellent care my cats have received over the years.

For the person who was offended because Dr. Barclay wanted his surgical fees paid in advance: this is standard procedure at most veterinary practices. Midwest Bird and Exotic and Skokie Animal Hospital also have the same requirements. Any surgery, ultra-sound, CT scan, blood tests, GI procedure and Xrays are expensive. There are very few vets that allow you to pay your bill on a monthly basis. Those that do are hard to find and you have to be a long-time customer who has not abused their good will. If you can't pay your surgical bill in full, I recommend applying for Care Credit which is a credit card specifically for medical use. Many vets take Care Credit today, but check first. I have it and it has been a wonderful advantage at times when I didn't have ready cash for an expensive veterinary visit.

This man may have his credentials, but compassion- he lacks. My kitten was dying and I took her there to be put down. I was not prepared to watch her suffer, and she clearly as suffering. He was extremely rough with her and his tone of voice was not friendly. He seems like he hates his job. He told me to put her down was not humane, however there's nothing he could do for her. He sent me home with her, and she bled to death, and suffered terribly. My bill was 62 dollars. He charged me for an exam and did nothing. 62$ for him to tell he she might not make it, something I already knew. My aunt had called him asking why he said is was not humane, and he attacked her, telling her she is not allowed in his vet (She never once went there), before she had a chance to say anything more, he hung up on her. After wrapping up my dead kitten in a towel, I got a phone call from him. "I just got off a terrible phone call with you aunt and was extremely abused." I told him kindly that I do not know what happened, All I know is my goal was to put this cat out of her misery. He sarcastically responded with " I am sorry you didn't want to give her a chance at life. you and your rescue group are never to come in here with another cat again", and he hung up on me. I will never forgive myself for trusting his judgment. My kitten suffered a long and painful death because I took his advise not to euthanize her. And to top it off, in his phone call never once did he ask what happened or showed compassion or condolences". I have never been so disrespected in my life and will never set food in that place ever again.

I've taken my cat to the Cat Hospital twice, and I've been very pleased with the service. I will say that the staff does care about cats, and they have taken good care of my cat when I've taken her there.

During my last visit, the vet explained in clear detail what was going on with my cat, suggested ways to help her. He also seemed sad that he couldn't do more to treat her Kidney condition.

This is a man who cares about cats, and his wife cares about them too. If you want a cat specialist to take care of your cat, I can recommend this, and Abbeywood Cat Clinic.

I am sure that in a desperate situation this man is probably a very CAPABLE Dr, but to me there is more to a Dr than just being capable. This man is arrogant, and seems to only be interested in the money. My favorite quote from him as he's asking me for $2000 in surgery up front "I'm not a bank, we don't do loans" awesome, thanks so much. On a personal level, this guy is a total jerk. Would not take my cats back here if their lives depended on it. FYI his wife owns Abbeywood cat clinic in Naperville.
