I've only been coming here for a few years but it has become something of a standby. I really like the staff. Drink prices are fair. I haven't made an effort to go on the weekends lately - I prefer the low-key weeknights when its not as crowded. I personally don't find it "dirty" or the bathrooms disgusting (as one female reviewer commented) but maybe that's because I prefer dives?

In a neighborhood that has essentially become "Lil' Lincoln Park", it's heartening to see the Gold Star holding its own. For longtime residents of Wicker Park/West Town, the Gold Star has always been a truly neighborhood bar. City workers, artists, sport fans and the great unwashed have always mingled peacefully here and it is my sincere hope that that continues to happen as the streets outside get gobbled up by greedy developers. Friendly, attentive barkeepers, good prices and one of the best jukeboxes in the city. Leave your credit cards and snotty attitude at the door, please.

Grab a seat, talk to a stranger, be yourself. This bar is great, very laid back and you never have to wait for a beer. Show up in your new duds or put on your pajamas and head on in.

I went to this bar to have a couple of drinks with some friends and I have to say...I was impressed. It is a simple bar with outstanding service. I figured the bar wouldn't be anything out the ordinary, like any other bar, but I have to tell you the bartender Mark really makes this place stand out. He is probably one of the best bartenders in the city. You never seem to have to wait for a drink..he is really on top of things. Most bars you have to wait a long time to get the bartenders to serve you on a weekend night but not here. I will definitly come back to this bar.

Pros: service/bartender, pool table, prices

Cons: to much light

The Scene
As slick sushi bars and trendy night spots push into Ukrainian Village, the Gold Star's an unabashed workingman's bar from old Chicago. Now a low-rent, hip hangout for area residents (though the walls have been painted…
