I am only giving them 1 star, because I have to give it something. I should give them ZERO, after today's service. Ugggh. Rudest salesperson on the planet tells me ""that's what you get for having heavy calves.""
The story.........
First:
I went in to exchange some shoes, but didn't have a receipt as they were a gift. Explained this to the manager, and asked if I might be able to exchange at all if they carried the same shoe. He looked at me, while never getting off of the phone, and literally said,

""Ok, but what's in it for me? I mean, are you gonna buy anything in the store or what?""

bug-uuhhh?!I understand if your store policy is to not accept returns/exchanges without a receipt, but come on! I've never heard anyone ask me that in a store. And it wasn't even like I'm an odd shoe size. I'm an 8. They carried the shoe.

Secondly:
Ok, so I said maybe I might buy a belt or socks or something. He hollers at a very old man to get me another size of the shoes I brought in.I wait. I go back to the counter 15 minutes later, and the shoes are just sitting on the counter. I said ""I think someone got these from the back for me to try on....just gonna take these.""I try them on. It's a no-go. These shoes just don't want to zip up all the way over my muscular calves, which I explain to the ancient salesman. His reply?

""Well, that's what you get for having heavy calves. You won't find any boots that'll fit you."" and followed it up with ""You probably won't find boots like you want at all with calves like that. You need lace-up boots.""

How insulting! (ok, my calves are not that big!) I've never been spoken to like that before, and nobody else should either. I will never give them my business again. Period.

I had an exceptional experience with Alamo! I live in Colorado and found that Alamo was one of the only stores that still had a discontinued Timberland shoe in stock, so I looked the business up online and called. I was a bit apprehensive because I live so far away and I had to give my credit card number over the phone, but I am happy that I did because the man was polite and sent my shoes the same day. A few days later I called to make sure that my order was shipped and the lady that I talked to was also extremely polite and took the time to look up the status of my order. I would definitely order from this store again, but I wish it was closer so I could go there in person because of the great prices and friendly people.

I have been selling services for the better part of the last few decades; these shoe salesman give my profession a truly bad name. We were initially lured into the store by the prices on a few commonly available shoe styles. We were then pleased by the attention that the [presumably] store manager gave to us in the name of service.\r
\r
But then the show began. A high-pressure salesman paraded out progressively more uninteresting and unsuitable pairs of shoes, under the apparent impression that we must just have a lower price point than the one he initially introduced. We attempted to explain that the children's boots were just ""too girly,"" but his solution was to bring out less expensive pinks and purples, rather than potentially more suitable styles that matched what we were looking for. It almost seemed as if the store's stock was limited to these types of shoes and didn't really have any more of a selection.\r
\r
After several attempts to sell us shoes in styles that we had clearly stated we didn't want, our shoe salesman shrugged his shoulders in a confused fashion, as if to suggest that we were being unreasonable by not purchasing the unsuitable shoes that he continued to present to us. When we repeated ""thank you for your help"" while walking away, the [presumably] store manager said: ""Lovely. Sorry to bother you,"" with a clear ironic tone, apparently irritated that we had wasted his resources during that 12 minutes in the store without generating revenue.\r
\r
We will not return to this store, and would not recommend any consumer who doesn't want his or her sensibilities insulted by two-bit sales tricks visit this store either. This was the the most unpleasant consumer experience that I have had in recent memory.

I like all the shoes they have - its pretty cheap and they have an incredible selection of stuff. I always shop here because its near my work but if it wasn't near my work I'd still find time to go here. They have everything a good shoe store should have - lots of selection, low prices and great staff. Worth the effort to go check it out.

Pros: Pretty shoes

Cons: Way up on the north side

i know why customers return to alamo: they have a splendid selection and the best prices. however, as a previous reviewer already mentioned, customer service is HORRIBLE. i have been on the recieving end of an episode too. also, way too many salesmen who circle customers like vultures. given the economy however, customer service aside, the prices get you coming back!!

This store has every style of shoe imaginable. I have bought sandals, tennis shoes, dress shoes and the salesmen were always polite and knowledgeable. The only thing I don't like is their return policy. You only have ten days to get back to the store and if you live far away it can become a problem. I got stuck with a pair of Earth Shoes. What happened to 30 days? But, if you're looking for comfortable shoes this is the place.

First, the star ratings for this absolutely HORRIBLE shop are not nearly 5 stars. In fact, just look at the reviews they have received and the rating should be correctly shown as 3 stars. And honestly speaking, even that is excessive, because the customer service, the yelling at customers and the absolute arrogance of owners and workers alike regarding any issue that is short of purchasing an item is without compare. These people keep records on their computer of your shoe returns! Who does that? Their policy is 10 day returns, and one gets nothing but unparalled abuse if they do return a pair of shoes that don't fit properly. Unfortunately, they get away with their absolutely horrible treatment of the customer, because people keep going back. Why? Do they like being abused? Are they so enthralled with the ""neighborhood shopping experience"" that they will take any abuse? This place should rightfully be out of business and no one, no one should patronize these mean spirited owners and their equally mean spirited workers. Come on people, have some pride in yourself and tell these people where to go with their attitude by not going in their shop. On the other hand, if you get off being abused by store owners, go on in. And when you take your shoes back if they don't fit, please, whatever you do, apologize profusely on bended knee and maybe the ownership will decide not to insult you. Or maybe, just eat your expense and throw out the shoes that don't fit, because you really shouldn't request any customer service from this outfit. That would be asking too much.

I just had the worst customer service experience ever.\r
I found a pair of $80 Tevas which I really liked, but they seemed a little pricey for the style, even after the 30% discount offer. So I went to a salesperson and asked if they could do a little better than a 30% discount. I consider negotiation a standard practice when shopping in a neighborhood store like this one, and I have done it a few times before, with positive experience.\r
Anyway, the salesperson nicely told me that he is not allowed to make those kinds of decisions but I should talk to the owner that he pointed out. So, I went on to the owner and asked the same thing. Next thing I know he is yelling (!) at me: ""This is not a flee market! Did you see a sign that we negotiate??"" So I tried to tell him that he didn't have to be so rude about it, to which he responded with more yelling - ""You don't have to buy them, put them back and leave!"" I was in shock.\r
Needless to say, I will never shop there again and will not recommend it to others. But if you do go there, please beware of the owner's temper and uncontrollable outbursts of unjustified anger.\r

I recently had a miserable experience at Alamo, after which I talked to others and discovered that two of my friends have had nightmarish experiences there as well!\r
\r
I bought a pair of shoes that had a visible defect inside that gave me a blister. I brought them back, and the staff member saw the defect immediately. She apologized and said that she would order another pair (my size was not in stock). Then the problems started.\r
\r
It turns out the shoe had been discontinued by the manufacturer, but no one called to tell me this. I found out when I called 2 weeks later to ask if my shoes were in. The manager said that the manufacturer would take the defective pair back, so that I could choose a different style to replace them, but I couldn't find any other style that I liked. For the price I paid, I wanted to have a pair of shoes that I love! Other stores still had the shoe in stock, so I asked for a refund so that I could buy the same pair elsewhere, since Alamo couldn't provide them for me.\r
\r
They would not give me a refund, even though the shoe had a very clear defect. The first staff member had immediately seen it, but now the manager was telling me that there was no defect! He basically said that I was making it up. I pointed out the defect, and said that only one shoe was giving me a blister, in that exact spot. He kept cutting me off, then literally walked away from me!! I am about the kindest and most understanding person you'll meet, and I was calm and respectful throughout this. I couldn't believe how he treated me.\r
\r
I didn't give up, and eventually convinced him to order the pair from another Chicago business. But not before he completely humiliated me, even reading me an email to the other store in which he called me an ""extremely challenging customer."" I was so angry leaving the store that I was nauseated and crying.\r
\r
I have the new pair now (same style), and guess what?! No blisters!

DO NOT SHOP HERE! They are fine unless you have a problem, and then their customer service is non-existent.

Alamo Shoes in Andersonville is the place to go for Dansko shoes, which can be somewhat hard to find. Clogs, boots, slip-ons -- you name it! Alamo also carries Merrell, Eco, Born, and Think -- all the environmentally conscious cool shoes you could ever need! They have frequent sales and a parking lot nearby. Stop by for all your fancy footware needs.

I never walk out of here without finding at least one pair of shoes that I love, and I am not an easy person to please when it comes to buying shoes! They have quality brands that you will not find at DSW or in the department stores. The sales people are great - VERY knowledgable and helpful. If you are just there to browse, a simple ""no thanks"" or ""thanks, but I'm just looking"", will send them away. I much prefer this over having to hunt down salespeople and then have them less than interested in what you want. It is well worth the trip to Andersonville to shop at Alamo. They have a free parking lot across the street for their customers - a HUGE perk, considering that parking can be tough in that neighborhood.

This Chicago favorite has been around for years and years. I like to pop in and browse whenever I see a big sale going on inside which is pretty frequently. Sometimes it feels a bit like youre on a used car lot the way the staff swoop down on you. This store caries all the major brands at reasonable prices.

PROS:
CONS: Over zealous staff

They have a huge selection of QUALITY shoes, which if you have feet problems you'll be wanting to come here. They are on the expensive side but you want to spend a little more money when it comes to your feet anyway, you'll just have to catch the sales if you don't want to spend the money. There ARE a lot of salesman wanting to help you but I have no problem manuevering them and it's nice to have them around when you need them. At least you don't have to go hunting around for them. Recommended, it really depends on what you're comfortable with.

While this store has a great selection of shoes, the service leaves much to be desired. From the minute you set foot in this store (which I have mistakenly done many, many times) you can see no less than three salesman coming at you. They are not very good at just letting you browse. Their sales tactics are quite bothersome. If they don't have your size/color they love to bring you shoes you didn't ask for in colors you don't want as they try to talk you into buying them. If you are able to fight off the staff, have fun browsing because they really do have a great selection of shoes.
