Message from Black Beetle Bar & Grill

Merchant_icon

The Black Beetle is meant to evoke many cultural icons: the shadowy, slightly seamy and creative urban underground, the scarab beetle that is the most sacred symbol of Ancient Egypt--calling upon forces beyond our control. And for esoteric music fans, there's the reference to Billy Preston as the fifth beetle.

Editorial by

The Scene
Crouching on a lonely stretch of Chicago Avenue, the Black Beetle is increasingly a hive for city dwellers retreating from Wicker Park madness. A classic curved wood and red-neon bar, vintage signage, Beatles-themed tables, wood chairs and brick walls lend an old-school feel, modified by odd bug paraphernalia. The young staff takes good care of the crowd of relaxed, slightly bohemian friends and couples.

The Draw
The draft beer selection is heaven-sent. In summer, Summit Weisse beer or the house brew are choice, while the Black Beetle's own stout is a recommended winter pick. There are also cold bottles of Stella Artois and Paulaner. The kitchen offers solid bar food in spinach-feta quesadillas, hummus plates, burgers, an open-faced tuna steak sandwich, salads and gooey brownie and ice cream desserts.

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Tuesdays, the DJ plays selections from CDs by local bands. Wednesdays, turntables turn with rock and roll and punk. Saturday, the Analog Addicts take over with hip-hop and funk. Otherwise, the CD player is likely to include classic soul, Madonna and underground rock.

Ratings_icons A little too crowded for my taste....

Linda D.

This place was a little too on the rowdy side for me, but if that's your thing, it is certainly worth checking out. I was there on a Friday night, so maybe the time to go is during the week?

Ratings_icons Great Local Bar

The Black Beetle is a great local "corner" bar. The music is not bad and they play a good selection but it gets very crowded, but if that is what you like then so be it.

This is a rock n roll bar that has all the fiixins of a wild party and the best frickin burger I have ever had. The dstaff is very fun and the people that go in there are all nuts. At least when I have been there. Everyone gets reeally drunk and you never know what to expect when you walk through the doors. The girls are al laid back and not stuck up like Lincoln Park. Five Stars all the way. I wish I still lived in the city. I actually almost didn't take a job in New York because I thought I would iss this place too much. Defnitley a stape in the city.

Ratings_icons Brunch Yes! Yes Please!

SOXfanCUbsMan

I have to say that I went to the Black Beetle for a bloody mary this weekend and heard that they serve brunch items. I ordered an omelette of the day that was Outstanding. There was even a little cup of fresh fruit with it. Yes, strawberries, orange pieces and mango. It was not super fancy, but it was plentifull and looked and tasted great. The server was super fun and pretty cute. The red potato hash browns are awesome! I always thought this was just a rock n roll night time spot, but they have really added another element of surprise to the table. I stayed for about 3 hours when I was only planning on one bloody. I will definitely be back soon.

Pros: Fun

Cons: a little crowded at times

Ratings_icons so good so fun

abby_theuring

I have been going to this restaurant for 3 years and every experience is great. They are always so polite. I have never waited for food or beer very long. The food is so good. I crave their food during the week. They have a TON of beer. Great brands that you have never even heard of and the staff always know how to explain it and know what to recommend. If you like going to relaxed places and hanging out all night, this is perfect. It's bar that you will want to be a regular at!

Pros: good atmosphere, friendly, good food and beer.
