Clark Street Ale House takes pride in it's over 42 microbrews. They do beer in a serious kind of way with everything from local brews Goose Island and Three Floyds to Midwestern favorites like a cask-conditioned Two Hearted Ale from Bell's brewery. If you're confused by the bevy of choices, sample a flight of small pours from the tap for three bucks. Beer is served in proper glassware, from tulips and goblets for Belgian-style ales to pint glasses for light, bubbly lagers. There are over 40 scotches, and many bourbons, cognacs, and tequilas from which to choose. This is done in a warm, and friendly environment. The ale house gives an old fashion European feel right in the neighborhood.

The Scene
Scuffed wood floors, art-deco wall sconces and an Old-World mural depicting good-time bar antics give this low-key hangout a classic air. River North professionals and nearby high-rise dwellers stop in for post-work drinks. A post-collegiate crowd with well-tuned taste buds yuks it up in the vine-covered beer garden, which turns into a people-watching hot spot in summer.

The Draw
A grand mahogany bar offers discerning patrons a mind-warping selection of libations including 95 hand-crafted beers--25 of which are on draft--and include seasonal offerings from regional brewers such as New Holland and Bell's. There are also more than 40 scotches, ranging from sublimely mellow to earthy and dark, as well as wines by the glass. Jukebox tunes are fairly pedestrian, so expect to hear jam-band rock.

Key Points

  • 42 Microbrews
  • Cigars welcome
  • Relaxed environment

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - Looking for something to chase that neat scotch? The bar serves up super-chilly martinis in either seven-ounce or 10-ounce portions.

Clark Street Ale House is a good place to go after dinner for some cold beers with friends. It has a very warm, enticing atmosphere that is much missed in this world of chain bars and restaurants. They have a nice selection of beers on tap and the bar tender was great! They do not have parking which was a big problem for me. I hate to spend as much on parking as I do on my drinks and you better be ready for that if you drive here.

Ratings_icons Amazing Laid Back Beer Bar

Clark Street Ale house is a welcome respite from the general river north / gold cost douchebaggery. It is a no frills bar with an amazing beer selection, cozy tables, and a good low key place to hang with friends.

There is also a good chance you'll see some dogs mulling around, as they allow pets!

I love this bar, and you should too.

Pros: Great Bar, Great Beer Selection, Allow Pets!
