Here is the thing with VCA Berwyn.......when it comes to a serious health issue and diagnosis, they are the absolute best. Yes, they cost more, but the benefit of a diagnostic opinion with the input of a team of doctors and specialists, as opposed to the opinion of one local vet, far offsets the cost.

If you want routine veterinary services, go to your local one-person veterinary office. If you need an absolute diagnosis and treatment plan for a serious illness, Berwyn can't be beat.

This place saved my cat's life. It is the best Animal Hospital I have ever encountered. When the cat was in the hospital they called 3-4 times a day to give us updates and made sure he was comfortable and well treated. After we took him home if we needed anything Dr Zimmerman would return our calls within 20-30 minutes. She is an excellent vet, accommodating, intelligent and compassionate. I can go on and on about her and the care my cat received. I am a MD and have rarely seen such care given to humans.

I have been taking my dogs to the berwyn VCA for 25 plus years. Just like anything else you need to be alert and ask questions.
I don't second guess the vet - they go to school as long as MDs do - but if I don't like their manner I change. They provide excellent up to date care. I like Dr Baumgartener, she is great and she loves my dogs, Last visit I asked her to look at a lump to make sure it wasn't cancer, she did free of charge.

Dr. Frank Norton through my own experience has proven to be sorely lacking in skills with handling patients and in dealing with his owners. He's been at the hospital for decades, the hospital receives numerous complaints about him, but yet he remains on staff. He cannot communicate information clearly, speaks in mumbo jumbo as if he's in a 3rd dimension. From the way he handles pets, you'd wonder if he even likes animals. He may have some good technical knowledge, but the value he provides is minimal considering his difficulty expressing it and his poor patient and client skills. He'd be best off working in a lab. He lacks ambition, for example I've called to check to see how my pet is doing and I've been told by him "I don't know, I haven't been back there lately.". Get off your chair and go find out, that's what I'm paying you for. He's also made medication errors in dosing with one of my pets. For such errors, clients should report them. The one hope at Berywn for an internist is Dr. Lidia Zimmerman. Although she's been practicing for less than 10 years, she is board-certified, is good with pets and people and is knowledgeable. She's also very accessible by phone, etc and does seem to sincerely care about my pet.

I had been taking my cat to see the vets at VCA Berwyn for several years but the quality of service took a sharp decrease in the past two years. In particular, I had a vet who claimed she'd checked my cat's blood pressure before putting him on a medicine for anemia...a week later my cat went blind from an hypertensive crisis due to high blood pressure and when i talked to another vet they could find no notes of this blood pressure check having been done at all. And this blindness could have been averted had she actually checked his blood pressure before putting him on the medicine. I also had to wait days sometimes for them to call me back when i requested a refill on my cats prescription, and had several vets who clearly didn't read his chart before examining him...and you get the picture. My only regret is that we didn't find our new vet sooner.

My advice is to stay far far away from VCA Berwyn. They used to be good but now, there is a lack of quality care and compassion which was most evident when i was trying to say good bye to my cat when his heart failed (several months later after his hypertensive crisis) before having him put to sleep and the receptionist kept running in to talk about money and fees.

These people over medicate animals simply to make money. I started our puppy here last year, but after finding a decent vet will never go back.

They don't take no for an answer and make you feel ashamed if you don't buy everything they suggest. Places like this teach you to be an educated consumer so you don't get screwed over.

We took our dog here out of necessity during an emergency. We expected the prices to be outrageous, so we were not surprised when they were. That has to be expected, though, for emergencies.

Anyway, they wanted to do major blood testing, etc. even though the problem was pretty much diagnosed. They also wanted to keep her for 48 hours, etc.

When I told them I would prefer to go to my regular vet the next day to continue prognosis, that this was only an emergency visit, they basically called me a bad pet owner. When I tried to explain myself the vet talked right through me, didn't let me ask questions. Very rude and disrespectful. Made a horrible situation even worse.

Upon leaving, I asked that the office manager call me when she was in next, as I wanted to let her know the situation. I am still waiting for that call, a week later.

The dog, by the way, is doing great (thanks to my regular vet...)

We've had only the best in service and care here. Our dog sees the Neurologist, Dr. Alan J. Parker. He has extended our dog's life by a few years, and her quality of life is now very good! When we first brought her there for a consult we feared the worst, as she is a seizure dog who had seizures many times each day. He has given us invaluable advice on how to properly medicate and monitor her, as well as what to possibly anticipate. The medication is not expensive, and we were given information on where to find it at the best price. (being a compounded medication) He has been diligent at unraveling her myriad of symptoms, determining their cause and providing effective treatment plans. Our questions are answered with care and we are encouraged to provide updates on her condition. All of the staff have been wonderful to deal with. We are extremely fortunate to have such a select group of specialists virtually in our backyard to take our pets to. Much of the U.S. does not! Our dog is now in her mid teens and no one thought she would still be here today. I am thankful our regular vet referred us to the Neurologist here. Highly recommended!

This place is very expensive when compared to other vets prices. The people are nice enough.

The main problem I ran into with this place was them constantly trying to up-sell me.

I came in for a simple check-up for my cat. Next they want to clean the teeth, additional shots, this procedure, that procedure, another procedure.

Then when you ask what is needed, I get "well none of it".

I have gone there for basic services and for emergency services... and it is not uncommon for their prices to run 50% or more of what you would pay at your local vet.

The last time went in was because my lab mix had a clogged anal gland and they needed to be express. I also wanted the vet to check out her ears as her left was always dirty. When I saw the bill, not only was I charged for the visit, every little thing the vet did also had a charge... $36 for the gland express (the local vet charges $12-16) $12 for the ear cleaning (I'm thankful the vet only cleaned one ear) and meds (which always run top dollar).

And don't even think about taking your dog there to get spade or neutered. Luckily, I asked about the price before I scheduled this procedure. They wanted between $350-$500 for a spading.

So you think with your top dollar, you would get top service? While I do love 2 of the vets I have met through there, the records are never up-to-date and you get reminders for procedures that you have already had, or won't need for 6 months down the road.

The only thing that they do right away is take your credit card and run the charge.

All in all, I don't think it is the vets (as I have had 2 great ones there) but the VCA banner should make anyone RUN unless you have no other options in an emergency.

This place will treat you like your asking for free service, but will charge you double if not triple what an honest place would charge. We have a story similar to the previous poster. The doctor was rude and acted like we were wasting his time asking about how our dog was. We had to leave our dog overnight (they can charge more, and sounds serious) after which they never called like they said they would. We had to call them and get the runaround. In the end it cost us like $900, which we paid, but the only thing we got was the bill. No explanation of what the problem was, what the prognosis was, what we should do when we get home, nothing. Just here's your leash, and you owe this much (not in that order). I spoke with other people about our experience, and sadly no one had anything good to say about this place, some were even worse than our experience.

I brought my 1yr and 9mnth old French Bull Dog in with heat exhaustion, she was in bad shape. i was told she had a chance to get through and they would keep her over night and monitor any change and notify me imediately if they needed to give any medication or if she had any change good or bad, that the bill could be upwards of $1200 just from 8:00pm when i brought her in to the morning if they needed to do any x-rays or anything. I asked what her experience in these sort of cases was and was told "well, it could go either way, it's 50/50 at this point" that her brain was swelling, but since she was still breathing on her own she could pull through. i went home and slept for a few hours aand never got any phone call from them. I finally called there at 6am and was told she was in the same shape as when i brought her in the night before. I asked if i could come in and see her and was told sure. i got a call about 45 mins later and was told to get there asap she was vomiting blood and they would have to put her down. devistated and crying histerically they had me sign papers to euthanize my baby...after all of that nd still no explanation from the staff at this hospital a $1200 bill to pay $500 of which had to be paid as a deposit to even leave the dog there. I was never given any explaination of the medications given to her but after going online to look up the meds given all of the side affects are those of the meds given, including valium which i was not told she was given...fyi watch the meds that are being given to your pets could they be the cause of thier suffering?

    PROS:
CONS: I could not get any answers in reguards to the treatment administered
