Thanks to my Aunt way back when CPOG first opened in 1972, I was 11 years of age and now 50 and still is my favorite place.\r
I have brought many family members and lots of friends to try something new. Back in time they sold 1 & 2 pound

What a fun and unique place. The pizza pies are fabulous. They are accommodating to changing the ingredients if need be. The Mediterranian Bread is to die for. I had taken my son down there when he was small. We returned recently, and he remembered going there. It was a good now and is was years ago.

I have been coming here since I began visiting Chicago. It is such a fun place to go with friends. The twist on traditional Chicago pizza is what I love - the actual pizza pie. SO good. The antipasta salad is also a must.

Pros: salad, pizza, atmosphere

Cons: cash only?

I have been going to this place with my family for my whole life. everyone I bring there loves it too!

You MUST try the mediterranean bread WITH the antipasta salad. The key is the two homemade dressings (yes they sell bottles for you to take home)
creamy garlic and sweet poppyseed.
mix them together and it's perfection!
Out of the dozens of visits,, I've only ordered the grinders once.
We go for the pizza
please try it and remember it is cash only!

The filthy mitt to remove the pizza was disgusting. We tried to overlook that and ate it. Not taking charge cards limited our spending and that was a good thing.

Never again. So many better places.

Chicago Pizza Pie and Oven Grinder Company is one of the most unique places in Chicago to eat. It's cozy and the food is wonderful and affordable. The pizza is unbelieveable, and the salad is great too. When I lived there, I tried to go at least once every few months. I am writing this, because value is so miportant these days, and this place really offers just that. So does the other fave. mentioned in a previous review, The Half Shell at Diversey and Orchard. That also falls under the "don't blink or you'll miss it" category of "small, sweet, worth-the-wait" treats hidden in this surprising city! Enjoy. Oh, and just park in the first spot you find...otherwise, it's a hunt for a space.

My husband and I were at Oven Grinder last Saturday night and had great food. We were there early, but really didn't have to wait too long. The Mediterranean Bread and Pizza were to die for! The pizza is simple, but has such good flavor. It is something in the cheese. I think the atmosphere is great. We cant wait until our next trip to Chicago and Oven Grinder

.

This restaurant is one of my favorites! Yes, we always have to wait about 15-30 minutes for a table, but it's always worth it; and, doesn't consistently waiting for a reasonable amount of time prove that the place it popular/well liked by patrons and efficiently run by its staff? The food is unique and always delicious-I LOVE the bread!! And as for some people saying that this place is too crowed and cramped, lighten up. This place gains its great atmosphere and character from the great historic building in which it resides. :) People enjoying their evening surrounded by great food in a great place is hard to beat!!!

Pizza part gets 1 star 2 stars for originality. The Grinders get 2-3 stars. Ambiance gets 2 stars. We went to this self named pizza place because of the raving reviews on this website and others. I am familiar with the city and it's many and varied restaurants. Now to all the raving reviews I have to wonder A. What are these people smoking or B. These people wouldn't know good food if it fell out of the sky and did a little dance on their nose or C. Every employee of the place is required to write a 5 star review. The place could be called claustrophobic the womens bathroom was "disgusting". The pine benches are tight and small and little comfort, but high enough to keep your booth isolated.
The Mediterranean Bread is nothing but a flat thin crust with some herbs on it. Comes draped over a small plate and laying on the table top. I hope this table has been professionally cleaned our food is laying all over it! How bout a bigger platter?
You can only order a half pound $11 or a full pound portion $22. The pizza pie 1/2lb is nothing more than a very small crust of dough shaped into a small bowl, and filled with a gobby mess of melted cheese red sauce a little meat and a couple of mushy mushrooms The red sauce is blah. I could think of 25 other places to get a better pizza experience. SKIP the pizza thing! The Grinder part should go in FRONT of the Pizza part of this restaurant. Vegie Grinder was good not great. 3 stars at best. It's big but $13 for a sub it better be big. No refills for the kids pop so be prepared to pop out some more cash for the thirsty ones. No plastic just cash? For a party of 4 or more adults who intend to drink pack some Jacksons or even Grants in your pocket if you're picking up the bill, because you'll need it. If the stars are being awarded for the Lincoln Park location it's a shame. The real rating is supposed to be for the food, service, ambiance, etc. PS Citysearch get more storage for these reviews. Go Sox, Go Cubs!

Your restaurant has been my favorite place to eat since it opened. After Imoved away from Chicago 4 years ago, I still come there at least 5 times ayear. I hate pizza, but yours is out of this world. I have always called itupside down pizza. I have been there through every recipe change and alwaysloved the very first original recipe. My husband and I were there on6/20/08, and we ordered the same order that we have gotten since the 1970's.Chef Salad, Mediterranean Bread, and 2 One lb. pizzas. For the very firsttime, we got sick. Are you under new management, or did you sell the restaurant? If you have, is there any way to buy the original recipe? Thankyou for your time, Jayne Ortiz

Thank you for visiting our web site and taking the time to email us. We appreciate your patronage. We have always had the same owner since weopened and for the past 36 years. We have always had the same basic recipefor our Pizza Pot Pie. Thank you again for your inquiry and hope to see soon.

I have recently moved to Chicago and was recommended this restaurant from a friend and it is FANTASTIC!! The ambiance is wonderful. You feel as if you are in a mountain town in Aspen...very cozy and cottage like. The food is absolutely delicious...from the salads to the Pizza Pies (what they are known for)...it is a must visit. I have already been 3 times in the past month! Also, the price points are extremely affordable with a great wine selection. Yes the wait is very long, however, I feel it is more then worth it! This is a must visit in Chicago!

Cons: Long Wait to be seated due to popularity

This place was referred to me by a friend so I was very excited to try it out. My boyfriend and I went there on a Friday night around 9:30pm thinking it would be a good time to go with out much of a wait. We got there and the place was PACKED. It is a very small building not very accommodating to the large amount of hungry people waiting to eat. Most people had to wait outside. We went there pretty hungry and disappointed to see that there was such a long wait. We got in to find out that they do not take names, their is one guy that is expected to remember all of the faces of everyone that comes in, and the order in which they came in. After waiting at the very crowed bar for an hour and a half we were finally seated. I guess the guy did remember us after all. The food was really good. We got a salad to start which came with three very tasty homemade dressings that you mix together that makes one delicious mix. With the salad we got their specialty bread. Which comes to you so large it is falling off of the sides of the plate. I have to say that due to this bread alone it was worth the wait. For our main course we each got a small pizza potpie. You can order the crust in either white or whole wheat. It comes stocked with meat and loaded with cheese. The only thing I think would really make the pizza potpie better would be if you could pick the toppings that come inside. Don't let the fact that you can't pick the toppings scare you though, because they are prepared fresh you can still subtract those items which you do not want. After all was said and done we both left very satisfied with very full belly's. =D

One of my favorite places in Chicago. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. There is not enough seating so you may have to wait but it's worth the wait! The host does not take your name down. But don't be alarmed, he will remember your face and when you are next to be seated. For 2 people, the one pounder pizza pot-pie and an order of the Mediterranean Bread makes a perfect meal. Don't forget to order the mediterranean bread!!

Have not been there lately, but I am overjoyed that the greeter is still there. He makes those who demand personal service cringe! He has a mind that snaps you face to your name and puts a unique number to you. You are never slighted! Some consider this bad service...but he is unique at best.

The Mediterranean Bread is over the top! The Grinders are unique at best. Such Ingredients!

The history of the neighborhood is awesome....across from the St. Valentines Massacre! Love this town! Why buy a plane ticket with so many great Chicago places.....Try Half Shell just North and West on Diversy and you will be ready for a HAT TRICK even if you try White Castle's next!

I don't know how the maitre d remembers you by face only. He knows exactly how long it
will be for your table too! Order the Meditteranean Bread for an appetizer and try to
sit at the round table in the window.
The best "POTPIE" pizza in the universe. I first thought the waiter was spilling over a mushroom the first time I went there. What a delight to see the chhese and veggies when he flipped it. Order the wheat crust, just because it's different.

I moved away a few years ago but this was one of my favorite restaurants and still is. Everytime I come back to visit, I must go here. This is such a wonderful cozy place to take a friend or date to try and to experience Chicago. If you haven't been and have the chance to go here, DO IT. The line is usually long so skip lunch and get there as soon as they open for dinner and you shouldn't have to wait. Get the bread, salad(mix the dressings as suggested) and don't forget the pizza pie. IF you think you still have room get dessert. Just enjoy this wonderful place and all the lovely character of this charming building. Take a walk to the zoo afterwards and just enjoy one of the best restaurants and best citys!!!!!!!!!!

Get the grinder, get the mediterranean bread, get the salad, get the mediterranean bread, get the dessert, GET THE MEDITERRANEAN BREAD! But if you're looking for pizza, or even something resembling pizza, you'll have to go somewhere else. This is 'franco-american' spagetti sauce in a bread bowl, covered with cheese. My mom served me this as a kid.
Did I mention the meditarranean bread? This alone is worth your time. Match it up with a dinner salad and it's one of Chicago's true values. Pizza? Maybe tomorrow.

Yum yum yum!! Me and my husband stopped in for dinner after a long afternoon walking around the Lincoln park zoo. Glad we worked up an appetite cause you get a ton of food!! We each got an overn grinder, me the vegetarian one, and he got the meatball one. Oh my god! They were unbelievable. Absolutely the best and biggest grinders I've ever had. Also got their salad with the tastiest mixed dressings ever. Went back and bought 2 jars of each to take back to Michigan with us. Cant wait to go back!

Known for their famous oven grinders and hearty pizzas, Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder delivers a cozy, intimate setting for any occasion. Lined with wood booths, this dimly lit joint is known throughout the community not only for its’ delicious food and rustic setting but also for its historical location. Across the street was the scene of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929 which involved Al Capone. There is an even a photo in the foyer taken from the restaurant’s threshold. Their pizzas are thick like a deep dish; filled with cheese, sauce, and toppings. Much like a pot pie, they are flipped out of the dish there are cooked in at your table. Although they only accept cash it’s worth the atmosphere and the food.

I am a native of Chicago and remember going to Chicago Style Pizza in the 1980s. It was my favorite place to eat pizza. I was there just two weeks ago after having not eaten there in 12 years, and it was still as good as I remember it. The Medeterranian bread is to die for if you have room for it AND pizza. The service is great, the ambience is great, and you will miss an experience if you go to Chicago and fail to give it a try.

Cons: weekends, pot pie

.

as a regular customer,i've tried most of the menu.you must start with the mediterranean bread and follow it up with pizza pot pie/pizza in a bowl or whatever you want to call it.every date i've taken their has been BLOWN away.

the grinders are delicious-baked till crispy. the pot pie pizza is unlike anything anywhere and good.
the mediterranean bread is different and the hazelnut ice cream is a nice finish. place is too small-expect a wait. place has a piece of famous chicago history-read about on the menu.

If you are looking for novelity pizza, they have it here. But, it really shouldn't be considered pizza. It is really crust with about 1/2 pound of cheese, and mushrooms that weren't cooked enough in the oven. The salads, I thought, were more notable then the pizza.

The pizza and oven grinder company might be the only place in the country with pizza in the title but no pizza on the menu! The bread is pretty good, but other than that, the place is not worth the wait. The only reason it is rated high is because they can dupe out-of-towners and people purporting to pass it off as a Chicago tradition. You'll have a better and more enjoyable time not waiting an hour for a table here and going somewhere else that will have the better food and more seating area. I suggest heading closer downtown to the Rush St/Grand Ave area for plenty of great pizza and other choices.

I have been going to CP&OG's since I was in 7th grade(I'm 37 now). I just can't get enough. I go at least 6 times a year and have never been disappointed. So what you have to wait and you pay cash(it hasn't hurt the business). And Parvis(spelling?) the main host since the get go is so nice. People think he's a snob but he is very funny with a dry and whitty sense of humor. My family even buy's me their garlic salad dressing to go!
Love it, Love it, Love it!!!!

Pros: Great Food, Nice People, Good bartenders

Cons: No lunch :(, No carry out :(

I love the food here: great Mediteranean bread and homemade salad dressings. The pizzas taste so fresh. During it's busiest times, the owner comes up to you to ask how many in your party, tells you how much time you have to wait, and in exactly that amount of time, he finds you to seat you. It's a small restaurant, but I wouldn't change a thing.

The only pulling people in is the reputation, the ambiance, and the Med. bread... apart from the foremention, the service was mediocre at best, the host - pretentious, rude and not at all helpful, especially when there's a wait. When I go to a restaurant, I would like to feel like my business is wanted ESPECIALLY when there's a wait. Nope - felt as if they were doing ME a favor for LETTING me wait. Never again. Give me a break - cash only?!!

Every time I travel to Chicago I make a stop at Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Restaurant a priority. The food is authentic Chicago style - in my opinion. The pot pie pizzas are out of this world. You have to have the flat bread - and of course on the salad, you need to mix the (secret recipe) poppy seed and honey mustard dressings together. That's tradition!

I'll be back again in July, can't wait!

I've only actually been here once since there is always a wait of about 45 minutes to an hour. But if you do get seated the grinders are great!

When dinning here you have to try the meditterenean bread white or wheat both are great. Don't forget to order a greek salad, the dressing you mix from two different dressings that they bring you. The pizza is the best in the city.

I love this restaurant! Yes, the seating is a pain (no reserv. and the wait is long), but it's amazing to watch the older gentleman in charge keep track of the line without anyone's name (he remembers you, seriously)... Yes, cash only is pain but who cares?, the ATM is 2 blocks down. The building is awesome (and historic), the ambiance is perfect (a little small) and the food is consistent, unique and delicious (salads, mediterranean bread, pizza pot pie's), oh and it's remarkably affoardable, service is always great and they have the best coffee i've ever had at a restaurant. Try this place ASAP, but be ready to wait 90 minutes during peak times.

The perfect crust, tastey sauce, doornob mushrooms, and unique presentation make this pizza an eating experience that will be remembered and recommended. Prepared by weight, one needs to take care not to order too much because it's flavor causes the necessity to finish the whole pizza. Accompanied by a delicious mediterranean bread and a tortoni desssert this pizza presents the perfect meal.

How can they be rated in the top 10 pizza places when they don't serve pizza. The grinders are a kinda sorta pizza knock off, and are mediocre at best, but they're NOT pizza. I will say the Mediterranian bread is outstanding, but IMHO, that's the only menu item worth the trip and wait.

I have been eating at CPOG as far back as I can remember. I don't know what's better, the pizza or the mediterranean bread, but everything there is amazing. This place is one of Chicago's best kept secrets. You MUST experience it!!

I love Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder but not for their pizza. It's not even pizza, it's more like pizza pie (as in chicken pot pie). It's one of my favorite restaurants but not for pizza. You also need patience on crowded nights.

Anyone who doesn't find the Pizza the best they have ever had has no taste buds and should be chewing on wood. Mediterranean bread to die for. Parvise and Shamier are the best hosts and the service is excellent. The only minor drawback is the place is so popular someimes there is a rather long wait to be seated. I have been going there for nearly 20 years and the Bar tenders, Hosts and Decor haven't changed. It is nice for somethings to remain unchanged. Thanks for the good times and keep it up.
