I appreciate the straight forward attitude of the stylists and colorists vis-a-vis the false-friendly, kissy-face pretensions of so many other upper-end salons. I'm not looking for a BFF but good hair. George always gives me great color (highlights and single process) and Agnes (and now Hain) never disappoint me in the cut and style department. Rare among high-end salons, they have a station where you can dry and style your own hair after a color. I live between Chicago and LA and travel the world extensively. Have visited and can afford top salons and I keep going back to Ifergan. SO much better than any stylist I've tried in Santa Monica. Best value for good dependable outcomes. Paid the premium for Charles once. Not really worth the extra cost. Front desk people sometimes a little ditsy, but that's pretty universal these days.

i have been coming to charles ifergan salon on oak street for many years. samantha does my color and gia does my cut. now, i understand things may go wrong here and there with the reception desk or the occasional mess up with an appointment, or something, but i can't believe someone would call them "overconfident" or "arrogant." not in my experience. i have recommended my colorist and stylist to several friends and colleagues and they've all thanked me. they are very competant and professional and take what they do very seriously. maybe that was the misunderstanding. i recommend this salon with the utmost confidence. don't believe those other bitter reviews. after all, they can only change your hair, not your life!

Because I travel a lot, I've been to the best of the best salons in NYC, Paris, London, Los Angeles and Miami. Charles Ifergan can't hold a candle to the others. But that's not my main gripe; it's their arrogant attitude. The so-called 'designer' who cut my hair barely paid attention to what the heck he was doing when cutting my hair; ended up with one side WAAAY shorter than the other. (No, that wasn't the intended style.) Plus, when I brought the error to his attention after the blow dry, he got all hot and huffy and literally stomped off. I did get a refund, but only after a LOT of hassle. Never again. Call this "the salon of the arrogant and not as talented as they think they are." They are legends only in their own minds.

Unless you're in your sixties, a millionaire and have nothing better to do with your day than waste time paying out the rear for over confident salon staff, then this is not worth stopping for. The Oak Street location is more pretentious that the other suburbs ones, but that could be because Charles Ifergan himself tends to be there. He is an annoying Frenchman who charges a disgusting amount of money for a cut by an egotistical mess of a stylist. I am not bitter by any means. I just went there asking for a specific cut and by the time I left, I was so disappointed I was about to run my Mercedes into a brick wall. Not only do I tell people not to go here, I would spend money to anti-advertise this salon if I had the time.

I've been to Charles Ifgeran to have my hair cut and colored several times and have always had a positive experience. Charles Ifergan greeted me on one occasion, the appointments ran on time, and my stylist gave me a great cut and listened to what I wanted. It is a bit of a cramped space in the salon, but they do give you personal attention and are very friendly.

PROS: Great Haircut
CONS: A Bit Expensive

I finally decided to try the salon after finding out I could get a free haircut with Gisele (it ends Sept 09, so Google it). Since I was getting the free $55 & Up haircut for free, I figured I'd go all out & get my hair colored & highlighted.

I was given the "tour" which is insane, since the place is packed & it's louder than the cafeteria at an elementary school.

I was taken to the colorist first, Bella. I wanted to go lighter and she told me that there was NO WAY I should go lighter based on my personality. How on Earth could she possibly know my personality? I hadn't been in her chair for 2 minutes! After that, Bella refused to even talk to me about my color choice and instead told me what she was going to do & when I didn't agree, she showed me a picture of my base color. I gave in and figured we'd discuss highlights later. My fault for assuming.

She started highlighting my hair first, without one word to me. Bella had to take many, frequent breaks away from me in order to talk to her friend about a new roommate. I'm not kidding. I'm not exaggerating. She spent more time talking to her fellow co-worker and new roommate than she spent on coloring/highlighting my hair.

My hair was a real mess to start with so I figured why not just keep my mouth shut & let these people do their thing. After all, I'd agreed to try the salon and it's super expensive so they must know what they're doing.

I was with someone who has been going to this salon for many, many years. She asked the makeup artist, Curtis, if he could recommend some colors for me if there was time.

After a shampoo, I was lead to Curtis. Curtis is the makeup artist. Curtis is the one and only reason I would ever go back to this salon. Curtis is a genius. Not only is he a doll, but he's super sweet, kind and is extremely talented.

I could not believe it was me in that mirror. I looked incredible.

I was taken to Giselle's chair, where everything I said about my hair was completely ignored. I had walked into the salon with freshly washed hair, free of product, so that the hairstylist could see what it's like. Well, of course she didn' t know since my hair was wet. I did try several times to talk to her about my hair and each and every time, I was completely ignored and I even got the feeling that she was annoyed that I would even TRY to say something to her.

She finished and I have to admit, my hair looked fantastic. I've never had a hair color and hair cut make me look so absolutely fabulous. I forgave the colorist and the hairstylist for their attitudes since my hair looked so beautiful.

My hair wasn't even shoulder length, yet I was charged $155 for the color and highlights.

The following day, I washed my hair. At home I realized the highlights were much too light, too brash, they were way too wide, nothing looked natural. The only good part was the base color, it's ok, even though it's darker than what I wanted.

It's been about a week and the highlights have toned down just a tiny bit, but they are still way too harsh.

And the haircut? It's uneven, one side layers beautifully while the other doesn't, one side of my bangs blend in while the other looks like she forgot to blend them.

I tried styling my hair the same way as Gisele did in the salon and it doesn't work for me. I realize I can never reproduce a professional blowout at home, but I can't even come close to what my hair looked like. There's so many layers and with the brash highlights my hair ends up looking like a fried, dry mess even though it's not. I've tried using different products but nothing is helping. I've had to resort to scrunching my hair and letting it air dry & keeping it wavy looking with a haircut that wasn't designed for wavy/curly hair - even though I repeatedly told Giselle that I wear my hair wavy/curly.

I might go back, but definitely never to those two again. I absolutely recommend spending time in Curtis' chair though!

I have been going to Charles Ifergan to see my stylist Tom for the last 6 years. Every time I get my hair cut (and I usually just go in for a trim) I never fail to get a compliment. I have sent Tom over 10 referrals. I have met Charles himself who is an amazing stylist and a great guy. When I needed to get my hair cut last minute and couldn't get in to see Tom, I booked an appointment with another stylist who I had gotten to know over the years and received an excellent cut from him. If there was not a family atmosphere there then I would have been S.O.L. because I wouldn't have gotten to know any other stylist that I might want to use.

On March 7th 2009 I saw one of their stylists by the name of Ashley. She had two years of experience but assured me she knew what she was doing. Unfortunately I received the worst haircut of my life. I had long well past shoulder length hair... she basically cut 15 different length layers all over... just awful. I told her before and throughout my cut that i work in a very very conservative environment (banking) and that I need something classic and easy to upkeep... furthermore as I have very thick hair tons of lawyers never worked well with me. For a haircut I have catastrophe on my head. I had to go to another salon where they ended up chopping another 4 inches just to try to even out the mess. They also advised lighter highlights to try to have it blend in more... I didn't do the highlights, but now must wait a year to grow the hair out. Honestly, Charles Ifergan Salon is overpriced and seems to have a ton of stylists who are young and there just to fit in the mod/ youthful atmosphere. Another friend got a haircut same day as I did in the Naperville location and hated the results. Do not go there unless you have a relationship with the stylists.

I have read other reviews on this salon from people who didn't have such a great experience. i would urge them to try again. i've been all over the city and there are a lot good and bad salons out there. i had my hair cut by aaron and highlighted by sam (or samantha) and it was a lot of fun. by the time they were finished i felt like we were best friends! they spent time with me, gave their opinions, listened to my concerns and together came up with a look that is totally me! the prices were average to expensive, but worth it. i can't wait to go back and hang out with them again, but more importantly, because my hair looks so great! a lot of salons in chicago, especially the gold coast, have some employees that could use an attitude adjustment, or could be happier about their jobs, etc. like the other reviewers said. to me, when you find the people you like, you stick with them. and i'm not going anywhere!

Cons: salon decor could use some updating (i'm nitpicking now!)

I moved to Chicago from New York and was looking for a great hairstylist. I'm very particular about who does my hair. I heard about Charles Ifergan salon from a new co-worker of mine. She goes to Niko for cut and to Olga for color and she always looks wonderful. So I decided to try it out. The stylists were knowledgeable and they listened to all my needs. My hair has never been so shiny. It was the best hair cut and color I had ever had.
Will recommend this place to anyone.

Pros: great cut&color

Cons: the crowd

When it comes to going to the Salon, there are two types of camps: those that want to have a pleasant experience by being treated kindly and getting a great cut/ color, and those that want to go somewhere trendy and expensive to see and be seen. If you're in the latter camp, this salon is for you! If you're in the former camp, run as fast as you can... in the other direction. Upon walking into this place, you will be ignored and made to feel as though you are infringing on the receptionists' time and space by coming in for your appointment. I'm not sure what it takes to be impressive at Charles Ifergan, but I think I'd have to sell my soul to do it. My colorist (George) was not quite as rude, but definitely bored silly by his job, me, or both (though he does a good job) and my stylist, Agnes, was surprisingly nice, humble and very talented. Though, at the end of the day, it's not worth going to see her when I feel the size of a pea by the pretenses and pony show at this place. Find somewhere else to spend your (many) well-earned dollars.

I had a great time at Charles Ifergan! I had my hair cut by Loryn and highlights by Armand. Both were great! The salon was recommended by a friend, and I called for an appointment and got in within a week. After the first time, you can make appointments yourself online, which is really convenient! I got there and was immediately greeted by the people at the reception desk, and one of them took me on a "tour" of the place, and even introduced me to Charles Ifergan himself, who was cutting someone's hair!

My only complaints are that it was a bit pricey for the highlights (though nothing to complain about in Chicago dollars!) and everything was so compartmentalized that it felt a bit like a factory. I was sent to highlights, then sent to someone else for a shampoo, then sent to someone else for a haircut. I'm used to one person doing it all. But everyone was great at their part, so I'm happy, and I'll definitely be back!

I would agree that the front desk ladies are rather unfriendly and act generally flustered by their secretarial duties. However, once you sit down with Dennis for a cut, you will be so pleased. He is always charming, friendly and a great listener. He has never disappointed me! Also, for a delicate process like the Japanese Straightening System you need to come see Sayuri! She does a painstaking job and I've been other places to compare. The cost is fair, but I think the talent is superb. Some people there could use an attitude adjustment---I think they like to pretend they work in Beverly Hills, rather than downtown Chicago. Other than that, it's always a lovely experience.

I visited this salon about 2 mos ago with my boyfriend and it was fantastic! We both had a facial, massage, and our nails done together. It was a great experience! They make you feel so comfortable and made sure that we were getting our money's worth. I would come here as often as possible simply because of the experience!

Pros: Inexpensive, expensive parking, medium crowd

I always recieve excellent hair color by Armand...he listens to what you want!!! Does not do what HE wants! Hair cuts have always been quality by Carrie. Service by the rest of the staff is fair at best. Not great hiar washing. Not great personalities from front desk. Rather snobbish atmosphere. Prices are very fair for the area I feel.

I waited 2 hours and 30 minutes before being serviced. I was referred to the "one" with the scarf on. The stylist did NOT cut my hair as requested and she spent 15 minutes total on the cut and style and it showed. When I communicated my dissatisfaction, I was asked to leave the salon. The WORST salon experience ever!!!!!

Dont be fooled by Charles's accent and seeming confidence. The man has no patience and absolutely refuses to listen!! His only concern is his own time and money, not service. Once, I made the mistake of having a regular stylist cut my hair because I needed a trim. She whacked off my hair! I told her to leave the front of my hair alone because I was growing it out. She insisted that if she thinned it with shears it wouldnt be noticeable. She kept going until there was nothing left but 1-inch stray hairs!!!! I had flyaways all over my head!!! I went to Charles to see if he could help. Before I said two words he already started hacking my hair and now I am left with a bizarre Mohawk. It is long in the back and extremely short on the top!!! The other reviews are absolutely true!!!

And people talk about New Yorkers! The receptionists were so snooty. Hello Girls You ain't all that and neither is the salon. I thought I was in one of those pretentious night clubs. With the prices they charge they should have better equipement and products. Like a pedicure chair. I could have soaked my own feet in my foot tub and brought my own polish instead of the crusty bottles they had. Charles' charm is the salon's saving grace because his skills well are comme si comme sa. Besides Charles, the make-up artist, Zolfi (?) was very sweet. Though my treatments were a gift I was better off getting the cash. So potential clients beware.

Pros: Charles Ifergan, make up artist

Cons: Tres pretentious staf, lacked quality, pricey

First of all, the people behind the reception desk were hardly warm and inviting. They seemed to have better things to do, such as to not smile and to seem put out when I asked about product. My color, by Ina and cut, by Carla, where wonderful. But the place itself lacked, I don't know, class? Personality? Warmth? It was just such a huge place, filled with people. I had to yell the talk to the hairdressers. I had to sit on a bench in the aisle to wait while I processed..along with the huge amount of others waiting on benchs to process. It was just not the coolest place for the money, you know? For 300 bucks (color, cut, and product) I want an experience to never forget. I didn't get that.

I have been going to the CI on Oak for 5+ years and have always walked away gorgeous! When my original stylist & colorist left, finding new talent here was simple...Michelle is by far THE Best colorist (I was blonde for 20 years-she changed me to a stunning Redhead- I get stopped often by strangers w/ compliments) Agnus gets an A+ for cuts. She always listens- keeping the style comfortable yet adding flair to stay contemporary.
Curtis- you rock at makeup! I love CI!
