Extremely rude and Ignorant

by Elizabeth J.

Their staff is very rude and ignorant. My husband wears a hat because he had cancer as a child in his skull. In his state issued drivers license's picture he has a hat on because of the scars. In other words it's a medical reason. Which is one of the areas that the federal and state discrimination laws throughly cover. The staff was very, very rude to him and wouldn't let him in, in fact ordered him to leave when all he said was 'really I have to leave? I have a medical reason for my hat'. His hat is preppy by the way and not anything even slightly gang related. He is also 38 and white. I called and spoke to the manager Rory and told me Hala Kahiki don't follow no laws and they can refuse service to anyone they like, even medical freaks. Nice reaction when I was just looking for the manager to speak to the woman at the door about being considerate of those with medical conditions.
Also I used to go to the Hala Kahiki a lot with friends a few years back. Though we went there often they always were kinda rude and I have heard them say they don't care about lost business because they don't need it anyway to customers. I work in client services and I would like to work for an independently wealthy company like the Hala Kahiki that can afford to lose business over being discriminatory and rude. Must be nice to run a business and not worry about making a profit.

Love the Hala Kahiki!

by Veronica R.

My friends and I have been going there for years. It's a nice change from the loud bars we usually go to on the weekends. Their menu includes a wide variety of drinks to try and I have never had a problem with any of the waitresses there. They stop by the table frequently to check on you and your group and any questions you have about the menu, they have the answer! If you're looking for a quiet place to just talk with friends over a drink this is the place to go!!

I would advise not go there

by Jane P.

I am sorry for the other 2 reviews but this place is awful!!! It smells, it discriminates, the waitresses seem to have a big tip on their shoulders and its just a cheap looking place. I feel they need to either shape it up or ship it out!!! I would not go there again, they lost my business. Even if they say they did not need my business. The funny thing is that I know people who know more people, who have advise them not to come, its the domino affect Hali Kahiki Staff! You do not know how to treat your customer, well only certain customers that is!!!!

A Taste of the Tropics in Chicago

by Jennifer R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,058

This bar and restaurant is definately one of a subdued nature. Very quite, not your typical Friday night bar out with the guys type of situation. They have a wide variety of tropical drinks which can make the evening a lot of fun sampling what the others in your group have chosen. A fun atmosphere combined with great drinks make for an interesting evening.

A Taste of the Tropics

by Amanda G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,109

Go to Hala Kahiki! Where else in Illinois can you step into a little piece of Hawaii, tucked away in a quiet suburb? They have a wide selection of tropical drinks (I recommend the Scorpion) and are reasonably priced for such novelty drinks. It is a quiet atmosphere, with low lighting and candles on the tables. There is also a cute gift shop - but be warned, it closes early. You can sit at the bar itself, or sit at a table and be served by a waitress. It's not your usual weekend bar but the cute atmosphere is worth the loss of your usual beer-and-shot routine. Definitely good for a 'girl's night out'!

PROS: Tropical atmosphere, gift shop.
