My daughter absolutely LOVED coming to PUKA! My husband was laid off, so we had to pull my daughter from the school. She begs all of the time to go back to PUKA. The teachers there are wonderful! They are very welcoming, engage in conversation, and show a drive to teach the kids what is needed. To my knowledge, they have a GOLD rating of quality, (the highest there can be)...which is well deserved! My child had Ms. Kerri, Ms. Jill, and Ms. Jessica while attending PUKA. She loved each of them so much and still talks about them at home. I'm so glad my child got to experience such a terrific place for her first time at a school. Thanks PUKA! Keep up the good work!!!

I LOVE PUKA. I have been working at Puka for over a year now and my son is a 2 year old currently attending Puka. Everyday my son is at Puka I pick him up with a smiling face. I love all of the staff at Puka they are all qualified to be working there and have the same love for children that I do. If the teachers were not qualified then they would legally not be able to be there with the students. Puka is a loving and caring place and the teachers and staff are there for you and your child. Anytime a child is sent away from Puka is because they are causing harm to other children and need help other than what early childhood teachers can provide. Every child at Puka meets their benchmarks for their age and most are above and beyond!! My son and I LOVE Puka very very much!!! I would recommend Puka to any parent!

My daughter started at Puka in January and I couldn't be happier. She is 2.5 and has always been advance for her age so I was concerned daycare might not be intellectually stimulating enough for her but I was happily proven wrong. She comes home singing new songs all the time! They have been wonderful working with her while she adapted to daycare. If I drop her off crying I never have to worry because they have her smiling in no time.
Other reviewers commented on children getting injured, accidents happen no matter where your child is, at Puka they provide an incident report telling you what happened and how it was handled. My daughter was bitten by a classmate; they comforted her and taught her how to handle the situation without physically retaliating.

The review on this board is miscalculated. If you did the calculation by yourself, the total stars should be fewer than 3 stars.

Any way, it is a horrible place to go. I was told to pick up my son in at 10:00am in the morning in the middle of my work because my son is too noisy ( who is only 2 year-old). If you want to be interrupted because Puka is not able to handle a 2-year old, then Puka is for you. Apparently, none of the staff at Puka is qualified to be a caretaker.

Horrible place to be. The manager was nice when she took the money. As soon as she felt that your kid needs extra attention, she would kick out your kid in a minute. My son was kicked out because he cannot go potty by himself at 3 year old. The daycare even refused to refund the deposit when they kicked my son out.

PUKA is my pick for child care/preschool. My daighter started there when she was barely 1 year old. After i finished nursing school i took her out to be at homew ith her until o got a full time job. now a year after taking her out she is 3 and i am working full time and it only makes sence to take her back. she is starting in a couple of days and i can't wait because she loved it then and i know she will love it now. Runell knew exactly who she was the moment i mentioned her name over the phone. The staff are very personable with the children and give very high quality care. besides my daughter being bitten in the one's class 2 years ago she never had any negative experiences. We drive past PUKA everyday and everytime she says "Look Mom That's My School!" The girl could barely talk when she went there before and she remembers loving it! she asks me all the time if she can go back. I RECOMMEND PUKA TO ALL PARENTS!!!!!

My son attended Puka as a toddler. None of the teachers had early childhood experience. I cried everyday at drop off. The comm. between teachers was terrible. I told them least four times that my son no longer took a bottle. I even took it home and he was still being given a bottle even though he had double ear infections and the sucking was making it worse. His bottom BLED three times a week b/c he wasn't given his diaper cream. I saw other walking toddler placed in bouncers and left there for 15 minutes and tried to rock every child to sleep two or three times a day on a very sporatic schedule b/c there weren't enough teachers in the room to supervise or keep them engaged.I also saw a teacher telling a 6 week old who just started there, "Ugh, hush. You're fine!" My son had his hand on the back of the door when another parent walked in. The door smashed the tip of his finger and half his fingernail off. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and had to have stitches which delayed his physical development because he couldn't crawl. We understand accidents happen but in the two weeks he did not attend, we never recieved a phone call asking how he was, never received a card, anything. They also tried to bill us for the time he was not in attendance even though he didn't attend and I missed school and work b/c he was hurt on their watch. My son was only there until we found an opening somewhere else. It was a horrible and heart breaking experience to drop him off there everyday!

My brother and I went to PUKA when it first opened over 30 years ago. He sent his son; I sent my daughter, and am getting ready to send my son. There are not a lot of day care choices in Carbondale (especially affordable ones) and we have always been please with PUKA. My son went to a home day care, and while I loved it, he isn't getting the education my daughter got while attending PUKA. Thanks to the proximity of SIU, the teachers are well-educated.

I have been taking my children to Puka for several years now. Each new experience has been wonderful and Puka has welcomed my children with open and loving arms. I am very appreciative and thankful to have a place in Carbondale that takes pride in the work they do.

Puka is a terrible. The staff is very rude and careless. My son was crying everyday at the daycare. Everyday he came back with new scar on his face. Do not trust the positive reviews here. Most of them are written by their own staff.??

My son has been attending PUKA since he was 3 months old. He's just turned 2, and I cannot say enough positive things about it! Their staff is amazing. They know each child by name, welcome them with a smile, and teach them SO MUCH! It's a structured environment, yet they still encourage them to have fun and be kids.

There are daily lesson plans prepared by the teachers, children play outside every day, they provide catered meals (breakfast, lunch & a snack), and baby food/formula/diapers are provided for the little ones in the cost of tuition which is great compared to some other places we looked at before overwhelmingly choosing PUKA.

The staff is flexible if our schedule changes, and their prices are extremely competitive with other local centers. We had the chance to move to a highly recommended in-home daycare a year after enrolling our child with PUKA and after visiting the in-home provider, we just didn't feel he'd get the same educational/social experiences provided by PUKA.

Simply put, they're amazing. I highly recommend them to anyone I know that is looking for childcare in the Carbondale area.

My son attends PUKA School, and, as a single mom, I have found PUKA to be an extension of our family. The staff are engaging and challenge students to excel academically, socially, and physically. My child continues to develop his imagination and creativity as well. When I began looking for full-time employment after college, I decided to accept a job in Carbondale largely in part because of PUKA.

Additionally, PUKA is a non-profit organization, and it is guided by an elected board of directors and feedback from parents/guardians instead of by one owner like so many other day care centers. Furthermore, PUKA is an all-inclusive school with a diverse student population. Diversity is widely accepted and promoted within the school, which I find to be a great message for people of all ages.

I proudly recommend PUKA School to all parents/guardians!

I have three children that have been or are still attending PUKA. I am very choosy and PUKA is the BEST. My oldest is getting ready to go to 1st grade and his kindergarten teacher has stated all year that he has never taught him anything. He is a well-mannered, highly intelligent boy, who can count up to 1000 or more, write and spell at a 2nd grade level and read. The curriculum at PUKA put him at this level, I cannot take the credit for what we do at home because he was with them 40 hrs./wk. My two youngest are going through now, and they love it. All three of my children have been there since 6 wks. and every teacher is great. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I am the proud parent of a PUKA alum and he has excelled in kindergarten due to the education and training he received while attending PUKA. When he got to kindergarten, he came home saying that he was getting bored because he had already learned most of the kindergarten subject matter at PUKA. I couldn't believe that he was so well prepared. He has turned into such a well-behaved and attentive student thanks to PUKA.
My son will be attending PUKA's summer school program and is already looking forward to reuniting with his old friends and going back to PUKA.
The money we invested in our childcare was well-spent, and I would highly recommend PUKA to anyone who asks me about where the best place in Southern Illinois is to send your children to be in a nurturing and loving environment.
I recently heard that PUKA received a QRS rating of 2 which makes it the only center in the area to achieve the state's highest standards. No other childcare center even comes close.

I would not hesitate to recommend PUKA to anyone. Our oldest son has been at PUKA for four years and our youngest is currently enrolled. The staff is loving and caring. The director makes certain that all staff members are up to date on the latest health and safety information. PUKA just received a perfect score from DCFS and a 2-star rating from the Quality Rating Scale (State of Illinois). PUKA holds itself to very high standards and, in my opinion, succeeds at maintaining them.

My daughter has been going to PUKA for 4 years now. They have done a wonderful job with her. She was basically potty trained by these people, she is getting ready for kindergarten in the fall and, if the past is any indication, she will have no problems....probably ahead of the curve. The staff is friendly and attentive and enthusiastic about teaching the children. I'm not sure where the previous lady got her information but, as far as I know, there has never been a security problem there. I would, and have, highly recommend the school to anyone who asks. The school has been in existence for over 35 years. My oldest son attended PUKA long before my daughter did and they did a wonderful job with him, too. Check around and I'm sure that you'll find many parents with multiple children attending. Again, I am very satisfied with PUKA and highly recommend it to anyone.

My son attended for only 2 days before we pulled him out. He was only 10 weeks old and left in a bouncy seat up against a wall for a good chunk of the day. There is no security. A stranger made it to the room my son was in, got him out of the bouncy seat, and sat and played with him for 15 minutes before anyone questioned him. When asked if he was the parent, he said no. Still he did not say who he was and was not asked AND was allowed to continue playing with my son. Never ever take your baby there.

My daughter has been going for nearly 2 years & she loves it! she has learned so much as well. I recommend Puka to anyone who needs daycare/preschool in Carbondale. They are actually open until 5:30 & your child can stay longer if they have to...but it will cost you.

My daughter attended PUKA for several years and enjoyed her time there very much. She moved up through several classes and had a variety of teachers which she loved. Their Christmas "show" is the best and I looked forward to it each year. They also are continually improving their facilities.
