I've been going to El Puerto since they opened and have watched them grow, improve service and do a lot of remodeling. I LOVE the food and the staff. This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in northern Illinois.

Went to a little going away get together from my work late summer 2008. We sat outside & seemed to wait a long time for our food order but we did have great drinks & chips/salsa. Unfortunately the weather turned sour & we ended up inside, which was not quite as nice as the outside area, but it was pretty crowded & the storm did seem to come from nowhere. Food was good, nothing spectacular but good, people were friendly. I would go back again, especially on a clear summer night.

Never again. October 12th 2008 and this place was loaded with flys buzzing the tables. Disgusting. We got sat outside right away. Had some stiff Magaritas and it took them an hour to take our order. It then took 2 1/2 hours for our food to arrive. We had to move inside before the food came because wwe were waiting to so long the weather got cold and it got dark out. The abundance of flys is really disgusting. I took one bite of my food and decided not to eat it. The enchiladas were awful said my friends. $120.00 wasted on garbage, flies and a bad time. YUCK!!! Thank goodness we did have chips and salsa for the whole time we waited for our food. however we had to flag down other servers and bus persons to get refills. We even had to go to the bar ourselves to fill up our dinks. I would not reommend this restaurant to anyone. Very few people that work there even speak english. Plenty of flying insects including large black flies abound INSIDE! Terrible service. Dirty restrooms with garbage cans spilling out onto the floor. Margaritas were really good however. Great view. Makes you wish you were out on the water and not waiting with the flies for hours waiting for the food to arrive. We came by boat and they do have a really nice dock.

Have eaten at El Puerto several times. Excellent chips and salsa. Tremendous portions and one of the best fajitas around. I am not a Margarita drinker, but those I have been to dinner with love them.

PROS: Great entrees, Great Prices
CONS: Piped in music can be a bit loud at times.

I have lived in this area for 30 years. I have no idea how long this restaurant has been here, but I just recently learned about it.

It was girls night out and 2 of the girls suggested El Puerto. I never heard of it. Which is strange, since I lived here most of my life and they haven't. I thought I knew all of the restaurants around us.

We sat outside for dinner. The night couldn't have been more perfect. The weather was gorgeous, not a cloud in the sky and we were overlooking Fox Lake. The sun set right infront of us and I felt like I was on vacation.

We actually sat and gabbed for over an hour drinking Margaritas even before we ordered our food. Many times, waitresses get annoyed by this, but our server was pleasant and let us be with an occasional check to see if we needed anything else.

The food was okay. I love Mexican and I have had alot better. The portion wasn't all that big and it could have been more authentic. However, the drinks were good and the location was nice.

I will definately go back just for those reasons. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't the best around.

I'll return for sure!

Mexican restaurant located on Nippersink Lake has a huge patio seating area and serves great enchiladas and sangria.
