I went in last week for the Tuesday night "workshop" and did not leave disappointed. The skill level of these professionals (they are not students) is high and the cost for the services is low. The apprentices are all beauty school graduates who are in a two-year program before they can get a chair in the salon. $20 is absurdly low but in this economy, it's a great deal for anyone who really cares about their hair but perhaps cannot afford to pay a lot these days. Be prepared to spend at least an hour for a haircut and more for color. A supervisor is present for both the consultation and then reviews the results.

Pros: Great skill-set

Cons: Receptionist not very friendly

When you want a special style, this is the place. She also has days in the month when you can have a apprentice do your hair at 1/2 the price. I had a very good experience. The staff was very professional and willing to please the customer. I recommend it highly.

Recently moved to Chicago and don't have the greatest hair. My collegues recommended the Marianne Strokirk Salon. First of all, the salon is a great experience and very comfortable, but more importantly I have the best cut I have ever had. Wash it, towel dry it and that's it. That to me is what makes a great haircut. And besides, it must be great. People ask me where I get my hair cut. You won't find better.

Went here for a fresh "new" look...and I got it!! Received lots of compliments on my still blonde, but very updated look. If you want a great color job that's right up to the minute (helps to keep you youthful looking AND current)--ask for Shelly!!

Toni was wonderful with updos for a wedding or special event. Super patient, would not let me or any
other girls leave unless we loved our hair. Very invested in her work. Great stylist, and great for new looks.

I started going to Marianne Strokirk on the recommendation of a close friend when I moved to Chicago ten years ago. I've been going there ever since! Kelly is an excellent stylist and I love the way she cuts and styles my hair. The service is great, the salon is "trendy", and Kelly has become a friend. I would highly recommend this Salon!!

I've been going to John Castro for many years for haircolor and highly recommend him. Before finding him I was letting my stylist cut and color my hair and my color did not look natural or healthy. I also like that I can dry my hair myself which helps with expenses. He is an expert on color and is constantly updating his skills. Trust him. The salon itself is very nice and in a good location for city dwellers like myself.

My coworker got her haircut here, and she looked great. I heard her get tons of compliments, so I decided to try it myself. I've never been happier with my hair cut or color, and I've never received more compliments on my hair. It's more expensive, but it's worth it.

Marianne Strokirk has done a remarkable job of matching my look to my personal style and professional image. Marianne provides me with a distinctive look and positive first impression. She has helped me in the success of my business, providing me a style that works in the aesthetic design world. Over fourteen years, she has changed my hair style from extremely short to very long and everything in between. All of the looks have worked... I have been asked by people in other cities if Marianne Strokirk cuts my hair... her excellence is recognized by many, even outside the beauty industry... I have enjoyed innumerable compliments on her work for a long time...
Marianne and the members of her staff help you to look and feel your best. They make you feel comfortable and welcome. I encourage my friends and family to go to the Marianne Strokirk Salon, as well. We never looked so good!

I've been a client at Marianne Strokirk Salon for over 10 years. Several times during those years, I tried other salons for either color or cuts thinking I could save a little money. The adage "you get what you pay for" is true in this case. I was never satisfied anywhere else and usually went back to Strokirk to get fixed what another salon screwed up. I will never go anywhere else again. The staff at Marianne Strokirk is knowledgable of the latest trends and products for color and style. My haircolor is so perfect that no one knows I have any gray and Marianne makes sure my style is current but appropriate for my face and lifestyle. Last summer, I had my hair straightened with the new keratin process. It was wonderful and performed well all summer.

The prices at Marianne Strokirk are steep but well worth it.

I started going to Marianne Strokirk on the recommendation of a family member when I had just just gotten a horrible haircut from a different salon. Not only did Jodi salvage my hair, but she gave a fantastic new cut that I kept for years. I trust no one else with my hair. The service is great. Always receive an excellent head massage, a great blow-dry, and while it's an upscale place, it is not an intimidating setting. It's convenient to get to both off 94 and off the El.

I just got a cut with Marianne. She's hands down the best. I've tried a number of times to find someone else a little lesser in price but I just can't find the quality. My cut literally looks good for months.

I go to John for color and I love when I walk out of there. I don't look "suburban blond" it's just my own color but better, not an imitation of anyone else, so it's very personalized.

I started going there when my old barber died and the new one gave me such a bad haircut that my wife cried when she saw it. I always look so good when I walk out of there, and my hair stays nice for quite a while. Sandy really understands what I like, and I can't even imagine going elsewhere now. It is not cheap, but it doesn't look cheap, either. It's a great style, and worth every penny.

I moved from LA to Chicago 16 years ago, and for the first 15 of those years continued to fly back to LA to have my hair cut and colored. (In fairness, I did have business in LA, so it's not quite as crazy as it sounds.) When I left my company 2 years ago, I was finally forced to find a new salon in Chicago, since adding a $400 plane fare to the price of a haircut seemed a bit over the top. I called Marianne Strokirk Salon, after having read an interview with Emma Thompson in the Tribune in which she talked about falling in love with the salon during a movie shoot in Chicago. I figured, if it was good enough for Emma, it was probably good enough for me. I talked to the receptionist at length about how fussy I was about my hair, and she set me up with Kelly for a haircut and Stacy for color. One year later, I can honestly say I wish I'd found these two earlier. Kelly does such an amazing job cutting my hair -- it always looks good, even up until my next haircut. Stacy is also quite talented, coloring my hair in such a way that it isn't obvious to anyone. And they are both absolutely delightful people -- I enjoy the chance to chat with them while having my hair done. I would strongly recommend this salon, and Kelly and Stacy in particular, to anyone who is nervous about their hair. You will not be disappointed!

Pros: Easy to get to; parking in front for only $5; always on time.

I have been going to Marianne Strokirk Salon so long I can't even remember when I started there. It is over ten years, for sure. I feel like family there now. For years, I had a terrible time with my hair looking stringy and limp and thin. As soon as Sandy cut it, I found out I had a nice head of hair, easy to manage. I get constant compliments on my haircut. It is my one extravangance. I cut out all sorts of other things when times are tough, but NEVER my haircut at Marianne Strokirk. It is truly a necessity now because it keeps me looking and feeling great.

Marianne Strokirk has a beautiful, light-filled salon on Chestnut and Orleans. I have unruly, curly hair and I have definitely been satisfied by their expert stylists and great customer service. Believe me, I have shopped around! I would like to especially mention Monica for color, Toni for cut, and Ganka for luxurious manicures and pedicures. Also, if you come on a Saturday, you can munch on almond croissants and sip gourmet coffee while you are waiting for your color to develop.

I've been going to Marianne Strokirk Salon for more than 15 years now and the quality of the people and the services there is unsurpassed. Sandy cuts my hair and without fail, on at least a monthly basis, strangers will stop me on the street to compliment me on my haircut. I also appreciate the low-key and understated atmosphere of this salon. I come here from a suburban location 45 miles away and it is well worth the effort! I've recommended Marianne Strokirk Salon to many friends and they have all converted and become regular clients.

Before going to Marianne I would never have had the guts to try a new look or cut my long hair. However, the talented, creative staff at Marianne Strokirk gave me the confidence I needed to try something new. Thank god I did! I get more compliments now than ever and I feel and look great! Definitely worth the money because the quality of services is exceptional!

Marianne Strokirk Salon consistently provides the best haircuts. Everytime I walk out of there I feel like a million bucks and everyone notices my great cut. I must say that I am extremely picky about cuts. I have lived in a variety of different cites and states and have had dozens of people cut my hair (with prices ranging well over $100). I can say with confidence that this salon tops the list, especially Toni Scavo. She is the best stylist I have ever gone to. Her cuts are to perfection and last. Even weeks later it looks like a fresh haircut. Their prices are reasonable and the haircuts are worth every penny. Toni even helped me to understand my hair type better and what types of products to use for my hair and scalp. I would refer anyone there and more specifically, to her.

I went there first, after seeing Marianne written up as one of the best hair stylists in the US. Each visit for a haircut with Marianne is like the first initial consultation -- time is never an issue, if you need to get some advice. Since then, several of my family members go there, for great haircuts, color and spa services. I know that when I walk out, I will have received the latest in style, but also with my individual needs in mind. All the staff are friendly and know you by name when you walk in the door. I always feel like a celebrity -- especially when I read about the latest celebrity who visited Marianne for a new hairstyle when in town. I have seen the staff go out with an umbrella to meet a client who always arrives by cab. This salon combines quality with customer service.

I have been having my hair styled and colored at the Strokirk salon for over ten years. The stylists and colorists listen carefully to my requests while also making suggestions. They have a much better sense of what works for me than I do. As I've grown older, the stylists and colorists have helped keep me to remain stylish. All of the staff seem well trained and the environment is pleasant and relaxed. The salon is a bit pricey, but it is a good example of the old adage "you get what you pay for."

Three years after moving to Chicago I searched for a salon that had consistent performance and could deal with difficult hair. I struck gold with Marianne and have been going back for five years. The services aren't inexpensive, but the results are worth it. After my first hair cut, I had family, friends and work peers raving about the new do. That sold it for me. You'll find the training that's required before the colorists and stylists "get their chair" to be above and beyond other salons. I'll only change salons if I leave town.

I am extremely satisfied with the quality of services at the salon. I have been getting my hair cut and colored here for years. I have been going to the salon for over five years and can tell you honestly that the ambiance and stylists of the place is something that just makes you feel younger and more "with it". I live in the suburbs and this place is a taste of what is really going on in the world, much more so than local salons.

My cut and color look great, and it is no big deal if you change stylists - it is not frowned upon. I know the stylists and colorists are constantly going to classes to improve their techniques. Years back, I would change salons on a regular basis, this is a place that totally satisfies me and I feel good about going and good about the way my hair looks.

I am extremely satisfied with my experience at Marianne Strokir and absolutely LOVE my haircut. It was my first visit to this salon after going to a very expensive salon in the suburbs and I would definitely say this haircut has been one of the best styles I have ever had. My friends have told me that in the future I am not allowed to go to anyone else! I think that the costomer service could have been better- when checking out the front desk person was a tad rude, but overall everyone else was very nice. Make sure to cut out a good hour plus to get your hair cut, I was in the salon for an hour and a half!

After years of getting haircuts at other places that were inconsistent and not-so-flattering, I found the Marianne Strokirk Salon, and specifically, Pat Spata. Pat took the time to understand what I wanted and made suggestions based on my lifestyle, my age, my size and more. The result - a great look that complements the rest of me. You may pay more than at other places, but as the saying goes - you get what you pay for. It's worth it.

For the past 2 years, I have had great service and results with the workshop at Marianne Strokirk on Chestnut. Color by Shelly is most flattering and she will actually listen to you and discuss her procedure and recommendation before the process begins. My cuts have been both short and medium, depending on what the stylist is learning. I have experimented with some cuts I might not have requested and been pleased. While the process may take as long as 1 to 1 1/2 hrs for a cut, you will get some good advice and learn some new styling tricks. Have only been bumped once or twice from their only on Tuesdays schedule and have always been treated with courtesy. This is one of the best bargains in the city and I have recommended the salon to both friends and neighbors.

Pros: Great price for upscale services

Cons: Only Tuesday appointments and not always a quick trip for a simple cut

I just started going to Marianne Stokirk Salon and so far so good. I really like the way that Marni cut my hair (and I tend to be on the picky side), and Kristen gave me great color that I have received many compliments on!

Pros: Although they are not inexpensive, they do give ways to get discounts off of services

Cons: That corner of River North is a little shady so don't plan on taking the train after dark

I visited Ashley at Marianne on Chestnut St. and had a great experience. She was friendly, patient, knowledgeable and gave good advice. She suggested we move toward the color I wanted in stages - color, dry it, check to see if it's what I want, and then decide what's next. The great thing about color here is that you can pay per highlight. If you don't want partial/full and want just a few pieces here and there, they'll accomodate with the pricing. Ashley's suggestions were right on and I left very happy - it fit my natural coloring well, was rich and shiny and had a few natural looking highlights. Ashley has great people skills and I'll go back to her whenever I can afford to! The only reasons I didn't give this salon a 5-star rating are the following: desk reception could be warmer - would it hurt to give a smile? ; only one small, crowded drying/styling station - they can have you use other stylists' stations who aren't using them, but it's kind of an odd setup; also doesn't seem to be much emphasis on the aesthetics of the physical environment - a bit harsh. But what truly matters is the quality of service you get, and this was excellent!

I have been to every salon in the chicago area. Lizz at Marianne Strokirk is BY FAR the BEST!! She understands color and what will look good on you. I cannot count how many times I have left a salon feeling as though my hair was not colored at all, or that my hair color was a little....off. Marianne Strokirk colorists are not only perfectionists, but more importantly CONSISTANT!!!!

I had two weddings on back to back weekends, so I wanted to break down when I had salon services (in between) so I could have a different look for each wedding... same group of friends, lots of pictures, etc. I booked a signature mani/pedi two weeks in advance for the day before the wedding, and I arranged my work schedule to go to the salon over my lunch. I check in at the desk, and not only can they NOT find my appointment but they can't find my name. After a few minutes, they locate a name that resembles mine in their roster, but there are no appointments associated with that name. Then they explain that the stylist only has time for a pedicure. Perhaps this salon should learn how to spell and actually keep their appointments.

As someone who has struggled for decades to get a good haircut, finding this salon - and in particular my stylist Sandy - was hitting the hair lottery! To me, a good haircut is the perfect combination of style, technique and ease of replicating once you leave the salon chair. Sandy at Marianne Strokirk does that and more. It is honestly the best haircut I've ever had. Not one to normally get compliments on my hairstyle, after my first cut with Sandy several friends noticed and commented on how great my hair looked. Sandy took the time to understand my lifestyle and really examine my hair, which is extremely thick and curly only when wet (once it dries it goes to frizz). She understands how hair performs and created a cut that took my hair into great consideration yet it looks great whether I leave it air dry or flat iron and style it. And, she is so nice to boot. The cut is so good I can go longer in between cuts which is an added benefit. I highly recommend this salon. Patti

I have been going to the Marianne Strokirk salon for about 6 years now. I have had Jodi as a stylist since my first appointment. She amazing and has consistently given me beautiful cuts. I am constantly complimented on the precision of the cut and it is so good that I actually go less frequently because the cut lasts so long. It's definitely worth it.

I went to this salon after spending a considerable amount of time on the phone determining which stylist would be right for me. Jodi was the one who came highly recommended. When I arrived at the salon I was very disappointed in the warehouse look of the place especially the poor lighting--extremely glaring. There was nothing calming about it at all. After awhile, Jodi came out and introduced herself and then we spent some time talking about my hair and my lifestyle. I am a business professional who needs a fairly conservative look but definitely updated to reflect the times. Spiked hair would not fly! I wanted a cut that would flatter my face, be reasonably easy to work and at the same time give me the sophistication I need in my profession. I thought she understood. And the final result? Disaster. No 50 year old woman wants to look as I did. I resembled the liitle dutch boy without bangs. She claimed it was a very updated do. I had one very similar back in the early 90's done in Boston and then it was a current hairstyle!
$85 plus tip and my time and I had the hair "style" from hell. And I told her so. This was not what I expected at all. I looked ridiculous. There was absolutely nothing flattering or sophisticated about this hair style. This haircut is what I would have expected from someone who had a local shop somewhere and who didn't understand English or who had no concept of what a 50 year old, business professional should look like. Progressive style? Absolutely not. So I now must deal with it until it grows out and probably fly to New York or LA to have someone do a style that fits my face and my professional life. I would not waste my money on this place at all unless you have perfect hair and just want a bob.

What can I say about the place. I love it. My stylist retired after 25 years of service. I started to panic after visiting hair salon after hair salon and not finding anyone that I clicked with. Then I went to Marion Strokirk's. I immediately knew this was the place for me. I received the best haircut ever from Guadalupe. They take the time to talk to you and find what hair style will work best for you. I told all of my friends about how great they are. I'm 50 and I even bring my 15 year old daughter for haircuts and colors. She loves it and we get to spend time together (an added bonus). I will definitely keep coming back.

Pros: Great Haircut. Parking. Price is right.

Cons: Sometimes difficult to get appointments or appointments are cancelled at the last minute.

I went to this large, impersonal salon regularly before getting fed up with the attitude. My senior colorist was aggressive on more than one occasion about selling me service I didn't want, and told me he's "fired" clients who weren't compliant. When I switched to another colorist at the salon to avoid him, he hassled me about it. Don't pay these prices to be bullied--it was easy for me to find another salon with a more relaxed, pleasant, and professional attitude.

This was my first visit to the Strokirk salon and wont be my last. I had my highlights done by John and they turned out to be excellent just what I wanted. I also received the best hair cut ever from Jordan. I was very pleased with both my services that I am looking forward to going back and getting different services. The staff here was very friendly and paid close attention to what I wanted for my hair. I recommend this salon to everyone and thank them for a wonderful experience.

I've had many bad experiences with my hair. This salon has definetely given me back the faith in good looks and good hair. At my young age is hard to afford pricey hairstaylist, but with my lifestyle is impossible to afford a horrible haircut. Bonnie gave me the best cut ever and the manicurist did an exellent job with my otherwise unattractive nails. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, so I definetely recomend the salon. I know I'm not going enywhere else ever again!

After trying a few other salons in my new neighborhood with unfortunate results, I booked a consultation with Violetta and colorist Stephen. Armed with a drawing of an idea, they took their time and listened to me. Together they came up with a haircut and a rather intricate color scheme to enhance the shape and movement of the new "do". My appointment was yesterday...and the results of Violetta and Stephen's creative efforts is nothing short of FABULOUS! My hair is better than I pictured. I'm an artist and right now I feel like a walking work of art...People stop me on the street to complement my hair!(Yes, I'm passing out cards!) Thank you Violetta and Stephen..for listening to me, for not just doing the easy "cookie cutter" do, for making me feel Beautiful!
