I went to this restaurant on October 1, 2010 for my fathers birthday! My mother and young sister picked it out. It was our first time there. You can pick from combos or choose from other items on their menu. The hardest part about eating here is choosing what to eat. They have everything you can imagine, even eel and seaweed! The chief prepares your meal in front of you as you sit at the sushi bar depending on what you order. I had a combo but I got to still enjoy the diceing of the food, fire show and comedy of the cheif. He was very funny! You need to make reservations at this place. The food believe it or not is very filing no matter what you order. I had the combination C which included salmon teriayki, fried rice, shrimp with veggies and motu soup. Review recieved 4 stars because thier customer service is average and the fact the food is expensive for large parties. Overall it was an awesome experience!

Everything is here! great food, friendly staff, fun atmosphere. Feels like your family. If you're a regular sushi customer here, the owner/sushi chef will give you special food that he personally make! They're just awesome.

I found it to be very entertaining - the food was very good good. It was a little pricey, but I would go again. It is a total dining and entertaining experience.

I agree that the hibachi table experience is festive (hence countless families celebrating birthdays there but it's no different from all the other hibachi places) and the sushi is generally fresh but since the younger generation of owners took over this CL institution - count your pieces of maki especially if it's take-out. They tend to shortchange and will NEVER admit a mistake. Plus, when dining in, it feels like the waitstaff are instructed to hurry people along to turn over those tables. It's too bad because CL could use another sushi place so Kyoto would have some competition and start respecting customers.

Best kept secret in Crystal Lake!!!

Awesome steak and shrimp for $13! You can pick your own combo or choose from a wide variety of seafood, steak, chicken, or sushi.

Food is prepared right in front of you or you can sit by the sushi bar!

Great place!

I work for National Association of System Administrators (NASA) in Crystal Lake and I was amazed to learn that every year on a day near Christmas they have Kyoto Japanese Restaurant _cater_ a sushi party at the office. The chef and two assistants arrive, set up the tables and prepare platter after platter of wonderful sushi, sashimi and tempura rolls. It is just unbelievable. This party has made sushi lovers of every new employee who swears he/she could _never_ eat raw fish. Anyway, I was thanking the owner profusely for this wonderful feast and he told me that it actually costs _less_ to have the party catered than it would to have the party at the restaurant! The chef told him he's the only one of his customers who has him cater. I couldn't believe it. If you're looking for a fun and different way to cater a party, this is it! What a great way to start a holiday!

Kyoto Japanese Restaurant is a great place to have dinner. The chefs that work at the habachi tables are very entertaining to watch. The food is great and it has a great atmosphere inside.
