I met Maggie when she first opened Maggie's Closet 10 years ago. She recently retired from the "resale" business to travel with her husband and to have a more relaxing lifestyle.
During the ten years that she owned Maggie's Closet she made it a place where one always felt welcome. Upon entering the door one was greeted with a warm smile and a heart felt welcome. What a rare happening this is today.
Running the store was a solo operation..she was the owner, the person who was there any time the store was open and even the person who cleaned the bathroom (just had to add that). Successfully running a business for a period of 10 years is no small feat.
While dealing with all that was required to run a successful business Maggie also managed to reach out to those in need. Some of the activities I recall were; Easter baskets for the food pantry, donating appropriate clothing for women seeking employment, donating to Locks of Love, donating a beautiful dress for the burial of a destitute lady (she had no family or friends and no money), the list goes on and on...but you can see what is in her heart.
Oswego lost a neat business when the doors of Maggie's Closet closed a few months ago...but more than that they lost a real friend to those in need.

I was at Maggie??s Closet many times and found the store to be small but with a very charming mix of items. Maggie??s main concentrations were on dancewear, Red Hat items, princess dress up items for girls, and white first communion dresses. Most of what she displayed had been pre-owned, but all was in excellent condition. She also had a few new items that she felt she had been able to get at an affordable price for her customers. I always enjoyed her selections and prices.
As for Maggie herself, she is a very wonderful woman. She used her shop for the benefit of many charitable causes. She also worked tirelessly making costumes for the kids in local dance recitals. She was always looking for kind things to do for people.
Maggie also is not one to argue with a person who is intent on telling her that she is in some way a bad shop owner. I have no idea why Pamela H seems to have had such a confrontational attitude toward her, but, Maggie chose to just step away from the belligerence. Maggie??s Closet was run by Maggie herself, and no one is nicer.

I can't imagine what people who are not members of a Red Hat Chapter think when they first walk in there, but I can tell you what a Red Hatter thinks: Yippee! There is just no where left since the Red Hat craze came and went in the clothing stores. But, the organization and the chapters and the members and Queens go on and on. We just need a place to buy Red Hat Diva clothes. This is it, other than on line. Thank you Maggie!

I have to wonder how places like this stay in business, especially with all of the superior competition relating to resale shops. Today was my first visit to Maggies Closet and it was a long 3 minute stay. There were barely any clothes since the place was literally the size of a closet - at least in terms of the kids area. I sifted through the Halloween costumes which were comprised of absolutely nothing but ugly and worn/old princess dresses that were highly priced (some were as high as $25). The price tags had like 5 prices on them - all crossed off with the final one being in red - which was still a high price! I then proceeded to the dance wear (1/2 step away) and noticed some of the ballet shoes were new - priced @ $15. I asked the sales clerk why they were priced so high and she told me that they are better ballet shoes than most. I continued to say that I can get brand new ballet shoes @ Gold Star Academy (in Yorkville) for $17 and she simply said "ok" and turned away. I immediately walked out of the store - not having any desire to look at the toddler/girl clothing that was there; I'm certain that there wasn't anything impressive anyway. I thought both the store and service was more than pathetic. I'll keep driving out to resale shops in the St. Charles and Geneva area in order to get quality items at unbeatable prices. Plus, they are large, organized and friendly - a far cry from today's experience. Why would I go to a RESALE shop to buy brand new ballet shoes that are priced the same as the shoes I purchase at my daughter's ballet school? Makes no sense. I hope that this places goes out of business - I'm not sure how it stays afloat.

Not the biggest selection, but very nice clothes at very reasonable prices - and it seems there is always some kind of special or sale going on. If you're looking for children's clothes or dance shoes, etc, this is the place. They also carry maternity clothes. In the rear section of the store, they carry a pretty nice selection of women's clothing and wedding dresses. Lots of purple and red hit you when you walk in, but they have all colors, sizes and styles. I would definitely recommend!

PROS: Convenient corner location
CONS: Wish it were larger!
